🧵We are at the Texas Tribune 2023 Legislative Preview Session.we will post thoughts here. #ttevents
Is Dan Patrick’s last term? What will he push? What does he want his legacy to be? The best comment “Don’t over think Dan Patrick, he’s usually very clear on what he wants.”
The broad general public supports Operation Lone Star. We have seen 2 million crosses. We don’t even know how much as been spent. More on this later.
We need to keep an eye on appropriations for mental health care.
There maybe legs on turning Austin into a district after GOP came to Austin and saw homeless camps.
Will they tackle lack of teachers in schools and recapture? Yes to increase teacher pay. Don’t know about energy around this and if we will see results.
We are so excited with this panel with @BhojaniForTexas, Morgan LaMantia and Charles Cunningham Image

On the Border @EddieMoralesJr is the only one talking solutions! #respect Image
If the State of Texas wants to spend millions of dollars in my backyard and it benefits our towns then I’m all for it ~ Rep Longoria. Image
Is Operation Lonestar more about turning border communities Red? 🧐 we have elected elated about the restaurants and hotels being full and a huge stimulus of Texas Tax dollars in their cities.
Uvalde now needs to Bullet resistance Buildings! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Image
? Directly at @EddieMoralesJr are you implying we should charge $2000 fee to those coming over the border? Rep Moralas believes that since they have the money they would happily pay $2k to and is recommending an annual fee there needs to be a buy in!
This idea is FUCKED UP @EddieMoralesJr ! You said some decent solutions too but this piece is fucked up!
Education panel: we have to improve the pay and that will increase access of teaching on the part of males ~Harold Dutton (because the lower pay scale is because it’s considered women’s work and we have inequality in women’s pay)
I was looking forward to the education panel the most and it’s TERRIBLE! So incredibly painful, out of touch, and slllllllllooooooowwwww! So much to say. But hot damn awful!
“Where there is smoke, there’s a smoke machine” Rep @GaryVanDeaver
They are going to improve HB 4545. People are lined up with questions! There is a lot on the line this session for education. This panel could have been better. All admit teachers don’t get paid enough.
The Health Panel is very interesting. Anyone who was on Pregnancy “Medicaid program in March 2020 are still on. Did this program make a difference in women’s health, we can now measure if it did” ~ Donna Howard
Tx is above avg maternal mortality numbers: Friday morning the review committee is meeting and may have maternal mortality report update but there is still no report.
With More women giving birth due to anti abortion laws, we need to pass more support for Moms and Babies this means a variety of care from mobile clinics to telehealth.
When talking about anti abortion counseling programs. There is evidence of miss use of funds and there are already social programs that have been proven to work. We should fund those programs instead.
Do you have to be assaulted to seek an abortion? How can we make the new law less bad? @DonnaHowardTX
Clearly we need more psychiatric beds. We need more providers. School funding is going to be big and improving counselors in schools. We have a surplus and it’s an opportunity and I hope take advantage of it ~ Rep Howard.
Property Taxes panel - The avg homestead tax billion Travis county property taxes are lower. HB3 all that rolled in for first time and bills are slightly down.
If we want to lower property taxes then we need a sustainable source for funding.
Tarrant county has the highest rate of increase on homesteads.
Predicted to fall to the 10th highest property tax rate in the country this year. But state pays for less and less every year all around and this explains why we rank so low in healthcare etc.
The biggest tax relief would be if the state would actually fund statewide needs ~ Sarah Eckhardt
And we have to leave! Thanks y’all

🧵Mothers Against Greg Abbott had a variety of campaigns this season and we are still pulling the final data together. But here's a link to our presentation that we gave this week to other teams who also had campaigns in hopes of offering a picture of what we are able to do.
We did digital ads, texting, TV/OTT, billboards, and we created supportive materials for candidates. Not to mention webinars, producing Ads as well as fun things to support Democrats). We paid for busses, Student GOTV and printed materials for candidates.
We asked our data team to start pulling data together that we can share. Let's go through it. docs.google.com/presentation/d…

🧵Tonight I had an opportunity to talk to film director and activist @joshfoxfilm about doing an ad for us on climate change. Josh is incredibly intelligent and a person who is a creative doer! So let’s discuss the Texas border, politics and climate change.
The fact that no one is asking critical thinking questions about the Texas border and our immigration problem drives me insane. How can we win the messaging fight when we live in a sea of people searching for simple answers and someone to blame? So here it goes:
Why aren’t our politicians searching for answers about WHY people are leaving their countries and trying to come to America? Is it their leaders, their economy or climate change? Why don’t we ever discuss the root cause. Growing up the US used to send resources and $ to assist.

🧵 How they supress the student vote: I just got this email: The Brazos County Commissioners removed early voting on the Texas A&M campus last July. They claim it is to alleviate worsening traffic conditions, but this is a clear attempt to suppress student votes.
The new location at city hall has almost no parking, is a 30 minute walk from campus, and is not serviced by TAMU Transportation Services or Brazos Co busses.
I and several other students have been speaking out against the decision at commissioner hearings but they dismiss us as not real residents of College Station. I'm reaching out to you and similar groups to try and gain more attention on this issue.

🧵What do Rick Perry, Greg Abbott, the border, Uvalde and defunding the police all have to do with each other? Well let's unravel this ball of lies, cover ups, stunts and what is has to do with running for President. Stay with me it's a long one.
Greg Abbott’s border stunts is nothing new. He took this playing card straight out of Rick Perry’s playbook. In 2014, right before an election Rick Perry deployed a thousand tools to the TX border in exchange for media attention.
Both Governors blamed their Democratic Presidents for the situation. politico.com/story/2014/07/…

🧵We don't know how to say this w/o just saying it. TxDems, there is no reason we can't create a platform Texans will listen to this fall. While the TxGOP Convention showed their divided party, let's remember that we are walking into convention next month where it is expected...
to be a bloodbath over who will be the head of the Texas Democratic Party. We are growing more weary that this divisive issue alone maybe enough to divide us. So what we are asking all TxDems, Delegates, Grassroots orgs, and Associations who plan on attending is this:
Let's focus on developing a message for Texans that all Texans can understand. Let's make it simple, positive, and attainable. Let's work together! Let's ignore the fissures in the party and let's partner with everyone who wants to partner. Combine resources. Play smarter.

A SXSW film crew was at Leander ISD School Board meeting tonight. An extremist parent started attacking a board member and using foul language about anal s*x and lubing and trying to blame a board member. For people who are scared of sex and LGBTQ, they sure talk about it a lot.
They are using it to bully and scare board members into quitting so they can start dismantling the schools from within. This type of harassment is what we are up against. These people are insane and even though we out number them, we need to show up.
We have to remember these are extreme culture wars they are trying to use to bully regular normal people so they can have their vouchers. They hate public schools, inclusive education, and the poor. We have to fight back.
