Back in the day in Chicago people talked about “shoebox” of money found hidden in the home of corrupt politicians. For European Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili it was bags and bags of cash.
About €600,000 ($633,300) in cash was recovered & computer equipt & mobile phones were seized, the prosecutor said.
4 people were arrested for questioning, including a former EU lawmaker & assistants working in parliament,& may be brought before investigating judge.@EUparliament
.@NYTimes reported that the Belgian police conducted raids in 16 locations — including private residences across the capital, Brussels — which yielded a suitcase with 600,000 euros in cash ($633,000). This is shaping up to be one of the biggest scandals at the European Parliament
Detained included Kaili; her life partner, Francesco Giorgi, who works as an aide to another European lawmaker; Luca Visentini, recently elected chief of global workers’ union, the International Trade Union Confederation;& Pier Antonio Panzeri, former member of European Parliament.
Francesco Giorgi’s Instagram gives an idea of their luxe lifestyle as his yacht sailed across the Mediterranean w/ stops in Sardinia and Greece. A pic of a private pool in Sardinia elicited a comment from Kaili about “insane beauty”
Kaili’s other recent sponsored events likely to receive further scrutiny. AI, cryptocurrency and blockchain.
European Parliament VP Kaili’s Christmas card message last year was to “Dream Big” — perhaps this year’s message is to find a good lawyer.
European Parliament corruption case: The partner of Eva Kaili, Francesco Giorgi, was also detained by Belgian police after being monitored for several months, is an expert on human rights and—wait for it—is the founder of Fight Impunity organization.
European Parliament corruption case: “The charges against the MEPs have already triggered resignations and the suspension of a parliamentary vote on granting Qatari nationals visa-free travel to the bloc, due next week.”
European Parliament corruption: “Parliamentarians voiced shock at arrests of 4 people—& of related detention of family members of former Italian MEP, who were allegedly offered a holiday worth €100,000 by the Qataris. Campaigners lambasted the parliament’s “culture of impunity”
“Transparency International, an anti-corruption group, said EU institutions needed an independent ethics regulator.” @FT
Will latest EU Parl scandal be a wake up call? Over many decades parliament allowed a culture of impunity to develop,w/ a combination of lax financial rules & controls & complete lack of independent(or indeed any)#ethics oversight,”said its director, former MEP Michel van Hulten”
European Parliament corruption case was front page news & top story of🇮🇹 Corriere Della Sera, right next to pic of Marocco’s win against Portugal. Headline: Money, favours: shock in Europe
EU Parliament Corruption case: I have never seen so much space dedicated to an EU story of corruption in an Italian newspaper—4 full pages. Will this case increase euroscepticism in Italy?
The EU’s chief diplomat, @JosepBorrellF, has said a corruption scandal in the European parliament involving claims that Qatar was seeking to buy influence in the chamber is “very, very worrisome”. @FT

“Massive ‘Typhoon’ cyberattacks on U.S. infrastructure and telecoms sought to lay groundwork for potential conflict with Beijing, as intruders gathered data and got in position to impede response and sow chaos” 1/
“The message from President Biden’s national security adviser was startling.
Chinese hackers had gained the ability to shut down dozens of U.S. ports, power grids and other infrastructure targets at will, Jake Sullivan told telecommunications and technology executives at a secret meeting at the White House in the fall of 2023.” 2/
“What no one at the briefing knew, including Sullivan: China’s hackers were already working their way deep inside U.S. telecom networks, too.
The two massive hacking operations have upended the West’s understanding of what Beijing wants, while revealing the astonishing skill level and stealth of its keyboard warriors—once seen as the cyber equivalent of noisy, drunken burglars.” 3/

The guided weapons are commonly referred to as “glide bombs”& consist of decades-old projectiles that would typically be dropped from Su-34 & Su-35 warplanes directly over targets. By adding cheap pop-out wings & a satellite navigation system, these former “dumb bombs” can… 1/
2/ …these former “dumb bombs” can now be launched by Russian bombers deep behind the front line and out of reach of Ukraine’s air-defence systems.
3/ “For them, it is much cheaper than using hundreds of thousands of artillery shells, when one of these bombs will demolish several buildings,” said Vlad, a 27-year-old soldier serving in the eastern Donetsk region.
‘Insane’: Xi’s call for ethnic Chinese to tell Beijing’s story stirs anger.
"Chan encouraged ethnic Chinese from across the world to unite, and with the help of Chinese officials, to work together to spread positive messages about communist-ruled China."

2/ Telling the Chinese Communist Party's story well has long been the work of United Front Groups:
"In 2023, Chan attended Beijing’s annual session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in and said that “we should put more effort in mobilising righteous individuals overseas” and “expose the hypocrisy of fake news from the West”.
3/ “As he openly called on overseas Chinese to tell China’s story well, he also attempted to blur the distinction between Chinese nationals and non-China nationals of Chinese descent,” Loh said.
“And I think that most countries will find it unacceptable to have its own citizens working for a foreign actor to exert influence that might work against the interests of your country.”
Hmm, wonder why these documents were leaked now? 🤔
“Criteria for a potential nuclear response range from an enemy incursion on Russian territory to more specific triggers, such as the destruction of 20% of Russia’s strategic ballistic missile submarines.”
2/ “The cache consists of 29 secret Russian military files drawn up between 2008 and 2014, including scenarios for war-gaming and presentations for naval officers, which discuss operating principles for the use of nuclear weapons.”
3/ There is a bit of a reach here as all countries need to have scenario planning. This also highlights the Marriage of Distrust between Russia and China.
“The defensive plans expose deeply held suspicions of China among Moscow’s security elite even as Putin began forging an alliance w/ Beijing, which as early as 2001 included a nuclear no-first-strike agreement.”
1/ Over 20yrs later, a look at US wish casting that having🇨🇳join WTO before it was actually ready would help speed up the process in which 🇨🇳would become more like the US. No other country in history helped strengthen a peer competitor while simultaneously eroding their own production base which contributed to rust belts across swathes of the US, disgruntled workers, & the rise of populism.
Great read by @JKynge and Keith Fray.
2/ From the very beginning, Beijing had a vy different view of US motivation for having🇨🇳join the WTO.
“Bill Clinton, the then US president, hailed China’s membership as “removing [Beijing’s] government from vast areas of people’s lives” and promoting political reform. Jiang Zemin, China’s then leader, had a different take. He warned that America’s real motive was to “westernise and divide Socialist countries”.
3/ This wasn’t how US policy planners 20yrs ago envisioned their push for 🇨🇳’s accession to the WTO would eventually turn out. 👀
As the WTO falters, “China is accelerating efforts to construct an alternative trade architecture that is insulated from US influence and centred upon the developing world.”
