Watching #Pandemic on @CNN right now - produced in 2017 about #SARS #MERS #H1N1 #HIV & other infectious diseases...and our failure to learn from previous pandemics is concerning. #unseenenemy
Some very interesting points about the #ethics of forcible #vaccination (done in order to eradicate smallpox), the role of rumors undermining authorities, especially in the age of social media & the immediate leap to close borders after the + diagnosis of 1st #ebola case in #US.
With the 2014-6 #Ebola outbreak, I wonder what combination of the 90% mortality rate or the point of origin played in the lack of resistance to enforced quarantine for those returning from abroad?

Not holding my breath that we’ll see this level of #data - about cases, contact tracing and emerging clusters - from many other countries. Experiencing #Singapore’s response firsthand has been eye-opening, in all sorts of ways. #COVID 1/n straitstimes.com/multimedia/gra…
1. The swiftness with which theat level systems and emergency preparedness measures kicked in. Yes, it 'helped' that living through SARS resulted in many SOPs and back-up plans being created, and reduced reaction and reflection time. But leadership played a role too. 2/n
2. Communication was key to creating a sense of calm. There was clear guidance from the healthcare authorities. From universities. From primary care providers. Heck, our *landlord* asked for travel declaration forms being signed within days of a few cases being identified. 3/n

#COVID19 #ethics thread: The hardest problem to solve in Europe/US now is an ethical one. From the public health perspective, China & South Korea showed that containment measures work. What still eludes public awareness is the moral responsibility that everyone has towards others
We need to send a very clear and simple message: we need to behave in a certain way not because we feel personally at risk or because it's imposed on us from above, but because we can help reduce the risk for everyone, especially the most vulnerable.
We need to control our behavior because otherwise we put our most vulnerable neighbors at risk: the older ones, the already sick, those who cannot protect themselves from #COVID19 for whatever reason. And we also need to do it to allow medical personnel to cope with the emergency

Today, I announce one man campaign to repeal FISA against American Citizens. 🇺🇸#RepealFISA
What some of my fellow Americans should know is when a #FISA is applied to an AMERICAN citizen, he or she becomes an #institutionalized #slave and #property with all constitutional rights and all protections removed as well as totally deprived of all civil liberties and privacy.
Intel officials abused their positions to discredit opposition to the Dem. Party, of which they were a part of with leaks to the media they control, they abused the public’s faith in their superior knowledge to vilify their domestic polit. enemies from behind secrecy’s shield.

THREAD: Following the #CAA2020 I would like to share the slides and Q&A from the #publishing session, how to get published and read, last Friday with @ivittieditor and @Arts_Routledge
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge There are so many journals! Tip: find the journal first before writing. Are you writing for a large generalist audience or would you have greater impact in a more niche pub? Find out about themed issues. Consider what is needed for you: publisher? readers?
@ivittieditor @Arts_Routledge recent authors? online only publications? metrics like Impact Factor or indexing services? type of peer review? submission process and avg length of time? Open Access? Who is the editor? Who is on the editorial board? Who are recent authors?

1/So there was lots of talk at @AACNursing #AACNdoc20 re: #Nursing #PhD pipeline, getting folx esp prelicensure students ‘excited’ about #nursingscience & the #BStoPhD

I totally revamped our #nursingresearch & #innovation course @UMassAmherst last fall to do just that

Thread ⬇️
2/ I told the Asst Dean when I took it on that regardless of the learning objectives for the course I had only 1 GOAL:

That by the end of the semester, these students would be EXCITED!-or at very least, just a little bit CURIOUS-about a career in #nursingscience & #innovation
3/ A note about context: This was a course of ~85 Accel BS students, taught in an urban campus that is geographically ~40mins drive from main @UMassAmherst campus, in the . The classroom assigned had no windows. Class ran 8am-1030am Weds, before more courses. I say this b/c....

Dear @nytimes @cnn @vice @newsroomnz @thescientistllc @businessinsider @bbcnews @LaVanguardia @diariARA @NatureNews @sciencemagazine I suggest to every one of you to carefully and honestly think and reply to a very simple question regarding #bats #conservation #virus & #ethics.
"A casual family wth 2 lovely children lives in the countryside, near a cave hosting thousands of bats. They never had an issue with them and don't know much about bats... but now they've read your most recent news and headings about #coronavirus. What would they immediately do?"
Let me give my personal view as a bat ecologist "They would probably seal the cave or massively kill as many bats as possible. Some could hopefully escape, but the colony wouldn't definitely be back." But don't misunderstand me. It is 100% logical, and I would have done the same.

Parental involvement in child's learning journey is uncommon in #Pakistan. As the Chairperson of Parents Council 2016of @Gemsfirstpoint I, my team & school worked together 4 the wellbeing of our children. #antibullying policy, core values, parental coffee mornings to name a few...
There is no concept of a Parent Council here. All the work is to be done by the school. Schools don't share the wellbeing and progress of the child with the parents. PTM is the only way to find out. Neither the school nor the parents are interested in forming an alliance...
Parents don't know if their child is suffering from depression, is being bullied, or is under stress. Peer Pressure exists. All we care is the grades. Same is with the school. We may find a career councillor but not a councillor in schools who is actively involved with the kids.

The upshot is, Winston Smith is gaslit to hell and back. He spends the entire novel wondering exactly what the truth is. Is it even 1984? He isn't sure. Does Big Brother actually physically exist somewhere in Oceania, or is he just a symbol? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The secret source for delivering value in form of software at (enterprise) scale? Option 1: the Thanos Method (get rid of most people) - Not recommended but effective for sure.
Option 2: create and maintain an immune system made of strong engineering culture (includes #ethics!!) AND platform thinking (for synergy effects & North Star). This is the option I do consulting at: Strategic Software Delivery. #devrel #dev #experience #SoftwareEngineering
The immune system is a passive force to allow customer centric thinking, allow experiments on all levels. It frees up busy minds and let’s you focus on delivering value to customers. Because it is a passive system, it is easy to overlook, but it makes all the difference.

Time for a test on yesterday's material: If you were making $3.4 million as a CEO and your largest clients were getting ready to leave for your competitors would you work hard to:
See that is why I hate chicken-hawk capitalists. They love competition until they have to compete. I thought that Travis and his associates believed in the free market. BTW, when we talk about free market that includes a free market for labor. #handsoffmypension

I do want to take some of this apart and perhaps speculate about the future. #AbLeg

I do agree that this current pension situation is absolute nonsense. Travis and Alberta Finance are responsible for 99.5% of this nonsense. Are you getting good advice? Or are you ignoring the advice you are given? I don't have enough information to speculate. #handsoffmypension
Allow me to speculate about how this might have happened... Kevin (CEO of AIMCO) a year ago probably knew he was in a bind. After about 10 years of negotiations the public sector plans had been given joint sponsorship (that ATRF already had for generations)

Such a pleasure to listen to thoughtful speakers on #AI #ethics #globalgovernance in a long overdue conversation in Britain. So much important debate such as this has been overtaken by Brexit, distracting us constantly from critical issues affecting our society now. #WLinAI2019

I recently read Joseph Dumit’s book “Drugs for Life” (2012) that boasts a clever title, intriguing cover art, and relatable topic. The aesthetics are great, but the content left me only partially satisfied. Get ready for a #BookReview #AnthroTwitter dukeupress.edu/drugs-for-life
Do you want to know something wild? A leading clinical researcher told Dumit that “being on five or more drugs for life is a minimum” (12). Wild for me. But for my parents, who use pill containers for their many prescriptions, maybe not. My parents actually gifted me one. Yikes.
Main idea: the definition of health has shifted. Being healthy makes us insecure b/c we're always at risk yet don’t know what we could/should be doing to counteract that risk. Instead of being happy I'm healthy, I know I’ve said, “I’m going to get sick soon. It’s been too long."

History books tell us how great the Roman empire was, they use the word 'civilized'. Yet, Romans did what neither the Aztec cannibals or Spanish conquistadors didn't do - they turned murder into a sport. This thread is based on -
Roman history is in three parts -
1. First were Roman kings - War leaders who went around smashing people. Then the seventh king (seriously named Lucius Superbus) started smashing his own people so..
2. Kings were thrown out in 509 BC and people evolved a system - Republic.
This was around the same time kingdom of Magadha was rising in ancient Bihar. Romans, however decided one strong leader was better for smashing other people so..
3. They created 'Emperor' with an 'empire' who smashed everyone in sight, and many who were out of sight too.

Having been late to Design Twitter's latest implosion over #design #ethics, I have several questions about how our community defines (un)ethical design. A (potentially unnecessary) thread... (1)

For context, see @round's per-usual excellent RT roundup 👇🏼
@round (2) Are certain organizations or institutions (e.g., Facebook, ICE, the military) inherently unethical and therefore any design work produced for them is unethical?
@round (3) If not all design work for such organizations is unethical, what are the characteristics we can use to define the boundaries of ethical vs. unethical design projects?

*ATTENTION PLEASE*#AI #digitalhealth #tweeps Today @IndraJoshi10 and I at @NHSX are launching our new "Artificial Intelligence: How to get it right report" with help from A LOT of people across the digital health ecosystem nhsx.nhs.uk/key-informatio… 1/ 14
The report goes into detail on our plans for the NHS AI lab but, more importantly, the research that sits beneath that - particularly the work on governance: ethics and regulation with invaluable input from @reformthinktank @oxfordethicslab @turinginst @FutureAdvocacy 2/14
We (@IndraJoshi10 & me) hope that the report makes it clear WHY we think #AI is important for health and care & HOW we can make sure it is utilised in the 'right' way - not just for the sake of it - within safe & ethical boundaries 3/14

Two possibilities:

Someone is making up the story about #TreyGowdy declining a position as legal counsel for the President in a possible impeachment, or #TreyGowdy declined that position.
If #TreyGowdy did decline such representation, two possibilities as to how that fact became public. Either someone else made that information public, or #TreyGowdy made that information public.
If #TreyGowdy made that information public, two possibilities. Either the client (@realdonaldtrump) authorized the disclosure by Gowdy of his request for representation, or the disclosure was unauthorized.

Great discussion of reasons why the trolley problem is not the right discussion for #AI #ethics

"If we want to make ethical AI, we should be... training self-driving cars to work in ways that we, as a society, can approve of and endorse."

qz.com/1716107/ via @qz
Decisions for what an #AI system will do are determined long before they are in use.
If the people making the AI aren't ethical, how can we expect the system to be?
Ethical, diverse teams are need to develop ethical, safe AI systems.

The ORIGINAL exposé by Mercedes Stephenson on Global News concealed Conservative Party as source of the racist video depicting PMJT

2/20 #CDNpoli #Elxn43 #TrudeauBlackface/#Brownface

That disingenuous story by Mercedes Stephenson was followed up by David Akin, also from Global News

That same afternoon, he told PMJT to step aside & quit the election so someone else could take over LPC
globalnews.ca/video/5925957/…
3/20 #CDNpoli #Elxn43 #TrudeauBlackface/#Brownface

Global News then dramatically edited its original story by Mercedes Stephenson, to finally admit they received the PMJT video from Conservative Party

But they concealed that significant edit too #Ethics
