@KieseLaymon@Occidental Hey Kiese: Too bad we're connecting abt this #JunotGate fiasco, as u're a smart brother I'd love analyzing culture w/. Listened to ur talks. .@UN_HRC Why did you invite discredited William Schabas to address the UN when on grounds of conflict of interest in 2015 he was ignominiously forced to resign from your Gaza inquiry after it was revealed he had failed to disclose his paid legal work for the PLO?
In his pathetic resignation letter, Schabas explained that he never bothered to disclose his paid legal work for the PLO because....no one ever asked him. "I was not requested to detail my past activities concerning Palestine..."
To his credit, UNHRC President Joachim Ruecker established the principle that UN appointees should avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. Only after Amb. Ruecker formally requested a legal opinion from UN Headquarters in New York did Schabas resign.
Welcome to #NATO 101. Lesson 1
"The mere lack of #military#power is, in itself, not enough to cause a nation to lose its position vis-à-vis other states. That only happens when the people lose their individual integrity and the country gradually loses its national #integrity...
#NATO 101, Lesson 2
"No-one wants to cooperate with a country that has lost its integrity. [Even when] other countries have dealt unreasonably... who would want to damage the amity extant between [us, just by] sticking up for a state that has no national #integrity to begin with?
We welcome this initiative by @NITIAayog, but a call for comments would have been a welcome addition. The paper takes important steps forward from the #AI Task Force report released earlier this year by the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (dipp.nic.in/sites/default/…). 2/n
Steven Pinker (@sapinker) comes out with an essay titled, no less, "The Stupidity of Dignity" (2008). This is how you get Trump elected & re-elected, this is how you get Brexit, this is how you get really bad blowback. Utterly, stupidly, unnecessarily. newrepublic.com/article/64674/…
Having started off in fine fashion by trolling the opposition *without actually achieving much thru the trolling*, Pinker then gets into what we could call #AcademicStrut, the Declaration Of Ego, dressed up over-intellectually. Let's examine this part:
1/ @sapinker's well-known problems with philosophy show up badly here. For one thing, the crucial point is dignity is an *intersubjective* concept, a social one appealing to conscience & group effort. Not just 'subjective', as Pinker wants to damn it. A complex but vital point.
Action #1-- It's critical to insulate the Director of @OfficeGovEthics from potential political retaliation
Action #2-- OGE needs to be able to communicate directly with Congress so that it can raise concerns about the activities of the Executive Branch, offer solutions, and discuss its budget without needing permission from another agency.
