Back in the old days, Protease Inhibitors were used as first line regimens, as they represented the latest and greatest. Due to the significant side effects that they bring, they are disfavored as first line meds, today.
This article discusses the role protease inhibitors, including ritonavir, play in the development of conditions related to disturbances related to glucose metabolism. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
Folk out here talking about this being a vasculopathic boogie man of a virus and ain't talking about drug repurposing efforts. Dian-sheng Zhong, Xiang-huai Lu, Brian S. Conklin, Peter H. Lin, Alan B. Lumsden, Qizhi Yao and Changyi Chen would probably suggest you get busy!
These data demonstrate, for the first time, that the HIV protease inhibitor ritonavir at concentrations near clinical plasma levels is able to directly cause endothelial mitochondrial DNA damage and cell death mainly through necrosis pathways but not through apoptosis.
These data suggest, for the first time, that the HIV protease inhibitor ritonavir is able to cause endothelial cell injury, which may be linked to the cardiovascular complications associated with its clinical applications.
It now appears clear that clinical use of HIV protease inhibitors, including ritonavir, is associated with a potentially serious syndrome of metabolic abnormalities characterized by peripheral fat wasting, central adiposity, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia,
and insulin resistance.

The Incurious Peer Down From Their Ivory Tower: This past week Dr. Joseph Osmundson, a faculty member of @ArtsandScience used this platform to slander a gay man who has been protected by the American Disabilities Act since birth, injuring not only my reputation, but his as well.
@ArtsandScience@ArtsandScience states We are a vibrant community of scholars, educators, learners, thinkers and producers. We transcend divisions, units and programs in our quest to tackle humanity’s great challenges, because in the world of ideas, there are no boundaries.
@ArtsandScience I consider myself to be a learner and thinker, as well. To say that Covid-19 is one of humanity's greatest challenges, would be a understatement. I was invited to speak on what have some have described as "brain fog."
Folk seem to take issue with my suggesting that people try and prevent HIV through the use of PrEP and hopefully, receive collateral benefits. A 🧵
First and foremost, I only post journal articles suggesting its efficacy, based upon the work of clinicians in other countries who were intellectually curious and wanted to provide relief to the suffering.
Here, in ‘Merica, folk are dragging their feet. You know what would allow us to determine efficacy? A viral load test, the lack thereof has contributed to therapeutic resistant strains circulating.
They don't know what the fuck they are talking about, lmao. They don't even read the journal articles that they post, lmao. hsrc.himmelfarb.gwu.edu/cgi/viewconten…
@42soho Based upon my knowledge of HIV, I am going to say that genetics plays a huge role. With both viruses comes viral persistence and a reduction in CD4 count. I believe there to be three distinct groups of those with a chronic SARS-Cov-2 infection, as is the case with HIV.
@42soho With HIV, there is what is referred to as the elite controller. They are Human Leukocyte Antigen B14*, B27, B57* positive. They are able to maintain extremely low levels of virus in their blood and a stable CD4 count, without medication.
@42soho The second group are the normal progressors who experience the typical disease progression. The last group is that of the fast progressor and are Human Leukocyte Antigen B46* positive.
What's For Breakfast? It won't be an omelet because folk gonna have egg on their face. A🧵
This morning I was greeted with an email from a reporter from The Body, which is an online magazine that is concerned with reporting on issues related to HIV/AIDS. It was within that email that I was castigated for a number of things.
First, the reporter took issue with a tweet from months ago in which I failed to use first person language. Did the reporter investigate other threads to see if I had taken the advice of others and switched to first person language. Absolutely not!
