How has public opinion of Harry and Meghan changed since their Netflix documentary? A short thread on the latest polling #HarryandMeghan
In the aftermath of the documentary's release, my own polling has Harry & Meghan's "net rating" at -26
Only 22% of Brits now have a positive view of the couple, 48% negative, 30% prefer not to say/don't know
If you want a reference point, this puts them broadly where the Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn was at the time of the 2019 general election
If you take a longer-view, as YouGov do, then Harry & Meghan's ratings have steadily declined over time
Harry is down from -13 since before the documentary to -26. Meghan is down from -32 to -39.
Their public image, in Britain, has deteriorated sharply since 2020
Such is their decline that whereas they were once one of the most popular royal couples, more popular than Charles & Camilla, today they are among the most unpopular. Only Prince Andrew is more unpopular
There is little evidence the documentary has helped. Only 4% say the documentary has made them think more positively about Harry & Meghan, while 14% say it has made them think more negatively
Amid the documentary, Brits were also asked, by People Polling, which royal couple "best represent the values of Britain". More than half, 54%, chose Will & Kate. Just 7% said Harry & Meghan. Will & Kate are well ahead among every group -the young, Labour, Remain, London, etc.
Another pollster, JL Partners, asked Brits amid the documentary whether they felt the couple should be stripped of their royal titles. 54% thought they should, 23% thought they should not.
If you believe, as some have written, that the split in the House of Windsor reflects a deeper split in the country between the liberal progressive Harry & Meghan and the more traditionalist Will & Kate, then it's worth noting this contest is actually not close at all
Will and Kate's net ratings are +62 and +57 respectively while Harry & Meghan are on -26 and -39. Neither couple are running for election anytime soon but perhaps this marked difference tells us something about how the British see the royals and, indeed, see themselves
It is also suggested that while Harry & Meghan might now be very unpopular in the UK, their "brand" is much stronger in the US. To what extent is this true?
Americans were recently asked, by YouGov US, how much sympathy they have for the couple
31% said "a lot" or "a fair amount"
48% said "not very much", "none at all"
Americans were also recently asked how they felt about different members of the royals. Net ratings:
Queen +47
Kate +37
William +31
Harry +18
Meghan +9
Charles -10
Camilla -13
Andrew -20
There is certainly some evidence to suggest their image is a little more positive in the US though, even there, their brand is not quite as strong as you might think
What is clear is that in the UK their image is clearly very damaged and perhaps, some might say, beyond repair

Why is Elton John leaving Twitter a story on the BBC while the Twitter Files --all of it central to the global debate over social media, power and democracy-- has barely been mentioned at all, having been buried away under a Trump story?
I think we've actually entered the Twilight zone.
The most recent 3 stories about Twitter, and I'm not making it up, are 1. Elton John leaves Twitter 2. Complaints of fired Twitter staff 3. Working conditions at Twitter
How to fix the NHS crisis? Steve Powis on @bbclaurak is absolutely spot on. If we want to begin dealing with the crisis we need MANY MORE medical school places here in the UK & become less dependent on importing doctors. Here are just a few statistics to underline the point ...
You can see how broken the current system is by looking at the number of applications to join the UK medical register by UK, EEA (Europe) and IMG (international medical graduates) who mostly come from outside Europe
In 2016, there were 7,180 applications from UK, 2,164 from Europe and 3,431 from elsewhere ... now watch what happens ...
I just spent a few hours at Michaela Community School. I was given a tour, had lunch with some of the students and discussed associated issues with the Social Mobility Commission. A few observations ..
The school is deeply impressive. My tour guides were two students, from year 8, who were very bright, well behaved, confident & asked me lots of questions. They also told me off for talking while students were learning in one of the classrooms :-)
Personally, I've never seen classrooms with so much energy and focus as the ones I saw today. And I've been in a lot of classrooms (and lecture theatres) over the years. The teaching style was highly engaging and it was clear students were focused.
Taking back control? Net migration in Britain just soared to 504,000 - the highest level in the entire postwar era and smashing the previous record of 329,000 in 2015
Overall long-term immigration into Britain was an estimated 1.1 million in the year to June 2022
The nature of immigration into Britain is also changing, radically. Number of non-EU nationals has soared 379k to 704,000 in year ending 2022. Net migration of non-EU nations 509,000 compared with -51,000 and -45,000 for EU & British nationals
Very cool Wash Po project on the Midterms. A useful correction to much of the analysis. Republicans did better than Trump 2020 margins in 344 districts. Democrats did better than Biden 2020 vote in 69.
Republicans have also made some significant gains in areas won by Biden in 2020
Also, less surprisingly, got a lot stronger in Trump 2020 districts
Most Brexit voters (73%) and all voters (57%) now think immigration has increased since Brexit & most Brexit voters (78%) & all voters (56%) think it is "too high". Only 30% of all voters think it is "about right" or "too low". More in Common/PF, Nov 1-3
Most Brits support refugees & want to welcome them but most Brits, 60%, also think "UK shd limit number of ppl who can apply for asylum to UK to keep numbers low". Only 28% think there should be "no limit".
Most Brits remain unconvinced that Rwanda plan will work. 58% say it will make no difference, 24% think it will reduce numbers. No real diff between Con & Lab voters. Conservatives remain just as unconvinced as Labour that the plan will make difference.
