Here's wishing Happy #WalongDay to the heroes of 6 KUMAON.
They went to their deaths heroically & steadfastly, without any fuss, this day in 1962.
Just so that a General could please a PM on his birthday.
This day in 1962 - The only attack of the war by Indian army was launched - As a birthday gift from a General to a PM.
A heavy price was paid by the Kumaonis of 6 Kumaon that night. #WalongDay
Denied even one day to prepare for the attack, they went in as ordered.
Out of the over 200 men that had gone into the attack, only 90 returned. #WalongDay
Folks sharing a nugget of info on military uniforms and how in the quest for 'Smartness', sometimes they turned deadly for armies!
By 1914, armies of most countries in Europe had changed from their traditional brightly coloured uniforms to khakis, greys, and other neutral colours that would blend in. This saved soldiers from being easy targets for guns of growing accuracy and range.
However, the French resisted this change to the very last.
It was only in the Balkans War of 1912-13 that Adolphe MÃssimy, the Minister for War, acknowledged that their 'smart' uniforms, including their bright red trousers, were getting French soldiers killed.

Came across this blog post from a veteran officer who revisited Kashmir as a civilian.
A mighty interesting piece. Highly recommended reading.
Totally worth the 3 minutes of your life that it asks for.
Will share some thoughts on it in a while. lifeingigahertz.blogspot.com/2022/10/differ…
Here's the tweet that brought out the blog post to my TL.
Now this is something really interesting since in a decade plus of my Twitter existence I don't think I ever came across such an account of viewing Kashmir Valley from a different perspective.
I've read the blog post a few times since this morning.
It is a short account of an army officer who has served in the Valley with a gun in his hand, and now returns for a different business altogether, in his new role in the organized retail sector.
2/3 It had the (now deleted) vid of Benazir Bhutto in shrill frenzy in front of a mike, encouraging Kashmiris to take up arms. This would've been either just before, or in the very initial days of the state sponsored terror unleashed by Pakistan in Kashmir
3/3 Here's the video of the Pakistani PM declaring her country's support for terror. It was also the beginning of the end for Pakistan as their own country descended into corresponding chaos, causing her own death as well.
As I said above ..Just Desserts
