🧵 Data in two new reports from @BEIS-funded #ElectrificationOfHeat project..

1⃣ Participant Recruitment
2⃣ Home Survey & Install

..show cross-sector innovation needed to overcome challenges to heat pump adoption.

8,807 expressions of interest from households were received, who cited:

▶️Sustainability and low carbon heating (78%)
▶️Interest in new technology (63%)
▶️Free heat pump installation (53%)

As reasons for wanting to participate.

2/12
The project installed 742 heat pumps:

▶️ 307 - Low Temp Air Source Heat Pumps
▶️ 244 - High Temp Air Source Heat Pumps
▶️ 38 - Ground Source Heat Pumps
▶️ 153 - Hybrid Heat Pumps

Heat pumps were installed in a representative sample of British housing types.

3/12
Energy efficiency upgrades were only needed for 15% of properties where a heat pump was installed – in most cases this was loft insulation.

4/12
Homes across England & Scotland were involved in the trial: SE England, SE Scotland & Newcastle.

You can read about the experiences of some of the participants in our case study library:

es.catapult.org.uk/case-studies/e…

5/12
Anna from #Newcastle took part in the project and recently replaced her “clunky” gas boiler with an air source heat pump.

“Generally, it is quite quiet…it heats constantly and…never gets uncomfortable”.

6/12
John from Crieff in #Scotland lives in a detached 1980s house and chose to replace his gas boiler with an air source heat pump.

“Noise is the most impressive thing, there isn’t any…it’s all very laid back and quiet.”

Listen to what John said:

7/12
The main barriers to installation were:

1)Practical – external or internal space constraints
2)Technical – heating capacity constraints
3)Economic – cost of upgrades required
4)Consumer – installation challenges

8/12
The EoH project found that the main non-technical barrier to a heat pump installation was disruption. Individuals were put off by the potential disruption of the installation work. 47% of participants who declined a heat pump cited this as their main concern.

9/12
📚The data points to customers needing:

▶️Early engagement
▶️Digestible facts & up-front property assumptions
▶️Dedicated customer support

10/12
📚The installation supply chain requires:

▶️Better training & guidance
▶️A review of design & installation requirements & guidance
▶️A review & enhancement of the installer certification process

11/12
Chief Executive @guynewey, said:

“To reach 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028, we need to innovate to make switching to a heat pump a smooth process; to drive down installation costs; and to provide a better heating experience."

♊️ DIGITAL TWINS - are a key solution in many digitalised systems .. but what about the energy system?

With @turinginst @CityscapeDigi we've created two demonstrators to begin to paint a picture of how digital twins could support decision-making.

es.catapult.org.uk/project/energy…
1. Energy System Digital Twin - Visual Demonstrator

Provides users with the ability to explore how policy decisions will impact the UK at a national, regional and local level in a much more intuitive way than the current suite of models allow.

2. Energy System Digital Twin - Technical Demonstrator

Explores how some of the current suite of spatially and temporally disaggregated models can be interconnected to visualise results under a variety of user-selected scenarios.

NEW: Guidance on creating a #LocalAreaEnergyPlan

~80% of local authorities have declared a "climate emergency" but few have a clear plan on how to get there.

LAEP are a place-based approach to defining a pathway to #NetZeroLocal.

NEW: LAEP Governance report also published today .. finds the extra cost of uncoordinated LAEP begins to emerge with a critical mass of >90 or 25% of districts.

Coordinating LAEPs with clear guidance could save around 1% GDP or £252bn.

About 80% (or over 300) local authorities have declared a "climate emergency" yet only a few have a clear plan on how to get there.

But that is changing.

Dec 2021: Only 15 councils had a LAEP completed or in the works.

Jul 2022: Increase to 43 councils in just 6 months.

This new report - The future of Local Area Energy Planning in the UK - aims to:

1⃣ Offer a clear LAEP definition
2⃣ Assess the scale & quality of Net Zero planning underway
3⃣ Identify barriers & challenges to delivery
4⃣ Assess common methods, guidelines, models & tools

2/6
1⃣ Local Area Energy Planning definition:

A data-driven, collaborative & whole system approach to meeting local & contributing to national Net Zero.

▶️ Fully costed & spatial plan
▶️ Identifies energy system & built environment changes
