Ever since @GretaThunberg’s, in many regards excellent, summer speech (#sommarip1) I’ve been trying to come to terms with the sources used to rule out #NuclearEnergy as the cornerstone in fighting #ClimateChange. Now @TIME has published the full script..

time.com/5863684/greta-…
..with links to her sources. Turns out “Risky” comes from HPC running over budget(!), and “expensive” is based on openly anti-#nuclear @MycleSchneider’s WNISR report, with no regard to e.g. system costs.

= two words w/o any backing that delay dealing with #climate issues. Why?
Don’t get me wrong, HPC has gone over budget and time and may cause a financial “risk” to UK citizens vs not doing anything, but it’s also incremental to achieving #netzero. But it’s crazy cherry picking. China builds 6+ reactors cheaply per year. Decoupling always needs nuclear.

This big breakthrough from @RishiSunak is to be welcomed unequivocally as a stimulus measure - & for #NetZero too, provided it becomes a piece of a larger puzzle, a #GatewayDrug to next-level #decarbonisation and credible #COP26 presidency - THREAD (1/11)

bbc.co.uk/news/business-…
🧩 rented homes: my reading is that private landlords will be able to access the voucher scheme, but lets see. Social housing has a £50m pilot - I think this will kick off the £3.8bn Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, but let's see. (2/11)
🧩 jobs: safe to say we want the 120,000 jobs from this to be around for more than a year. This is a big number and more will be needed - let's think how these can be folded into a #justtransition, which includes ending #fuelpoverty. (3/11)

With #Covid19 as the ultimate catalyst, the push is on to implement the financialization of nature.

The Natural Capital Coalition is made up of approx. 300 orgs/corps while working w/ thousands. Partners include #CocaCola, #Shell, #Walmart.

Those with money will own #nature.
Those w/ $ will own #nature.

The very corporations that have brought us to the precipice of #ecological #collapse - will now be appointed as the new stewards of nature. This has been dubbed (#XR Business - Elkington/Volans) as the new biosphere economy.

#NewDealForNature
Let's take a look at how #Covid19 has been successfully leveraged (both fear & distraction) in order to aid the largest transformation of the global economic system in modern history. Assigning monetary value to nature ("natural capital") will replace #GDP.

Today marks a year since the UK became the world’s first major economy to enshrine in law a commitment to end its territorial contribution to global heating by 2050. A thread on what’s happened since #NetZero became law and what comes next.
2050 is too late but we can still take pride in the fact we adopted a legally-binding #NetZero target. But setting a target is one thing; hitting it is quite another. Over the past 12 months, the Government has done precious little to set us on the path to carbon neutrality.
Just two weeks after we legislated for #Netzero last year, the Government’s own climate advisors @theCCCuk warned: “UK action to curb greenhouse gas emissions is lagging far behind what is needed, even to meet previous, less stringent, emissions targets”.

Ten top takeaways from this morning's @theCCCuk Progress Report - delivered into a unique triple context - the #Covid_19 crisis, UK being off-track to its legally-binding 2050 #netzero emissions target, and the UK's hosting of the next, seminal UN climate summit #COP26
1) UK will get triple win from post-Covid stimulus packages aligned with net zero - jobs, levelling-up & climate. Report surveys 13 analyses from eg @CBItweets, @WorldBank & @ETC_energy & concludes 'green' measures can produce more jobs & more local growth faster than others
2) Stimulus packages should not lock in climate risk or reward: "Public money should not support industries or infrastructure in a way that is not consistent with the future #netzero economy or that increase exposure to climate risks.” Implications for airlines, North Sea?

This time, as a functioning thread: my first Twitter thread to reflect on @Stanford BOTs decision today re: #divestment. In sum, it is the kind of comprehensive approach endowments should be taking. 1/
news.stanford.edu/2020/06/12/tru…
The BOT essentially did 3 things. 1) they issued a statement that climate is an “urgent challenge” & @Stanford is committed to the goals #ParisAgreement (I called for this kind of statement in 2014. Took a while, but it's actually a big deal.) 2/
institutionalinvestor.com/article/b14zbk…
2)@Stanford committed to at least #netzero GHG by 2050 for both operations & investments &, importantly, to engage in research and collaboration to develop mechanisms to achieve net-zero. 3/

Small #netzero infrastructure investments, writ large, @RishiSunak: @eeiguk today sets out #energyefficiency's offer for net-zero compatible stimulus and resilient recovery: theeeig.co.uk/media/1091/eei…. Coverage here: bbc.co.uk/news/business-… THREAD 1/
First off, @eeiguk is a growing and broad-based coalition of over 25 industry groups, NGOs, charities and businesses asking for rapid improvement in energy efficiency for UK homes and buildings. It's vision is set out here: theeeig.co.uk/media/1063/eei… 2/
The 2-year stimulus of £2.8bn public investment, unlocks £3.4bn from homeowners, social landlords and the public sector. It would support 42,500 jobs, while 1m households would save £270 on their bills. It dovetails into a programme that puts homes on track for #netzero 3/

1. #digital #energy governance challenge number 2 - distributional effects and #inequalities. An enormously complex area that's hard to summarize in a tweet - really a whole PhD in its own right. (If you're doing this please say hello!) Full report - bit.ly/2A0KuQm.
2. Key point: digitalisation holds the potential to change the nature, spread and scale of existing energy distributional challenges, as well as introducing new ones. We must address this to facilitate a #JustTransition to #netzero.
3. Note: there is much more to be explored around this challenge that goes beyond my resources/knowledge. I'm looking for UK-based experts to participate in my second phase of research - if interested please contact me or sign up via the link in the report.

1. #COVID19 has overshadowed much of government's policy agenda including the response to #ClimateChange. Now, the green agenda will have to battle for prominence during the economic recovery phase. A short thread on the likelihood of a green recovery by @jbuckland13 and @Gilesyb
2. The impact of #COVID19 on global carbon emissions is one of the few silver linings to the current pandemic. As countries have gone into lockdown, emissions have fallen dramatically with early analysis putting us on course for the biggest fall on record. @IEA
3. However, the impact will be short lived. As measures are relaxed, business & industrial energy use will return and emissions will pick up. Politicians will focus on getting the economy motoring again, superseding #environmental interests in the short term

💡Innovating to #NetZero

How much can we expect from citizens & consumers on the way to 2050?

Dr @MatthewLipson sets out an approach ...
PANEL:
1⃣ People can handle the Net Zero challenge if we provide the solutions @Bankfieldbecky
2⃣ People will accept automation for residential flexibility @tom_pakenham
3⃣ Understand why some people resist change & develop solutions for them @CitizensAdvice Gillian Cooper
4⃣ Markets are not always best for making decisions on #NetZero solutions - eg. network v household choice @MatthewLipson
5⃣ We don't have a high energy cost problem, we have cr@p housing problem .. vulnerabilities must sit where they belong .. in social policy @Laura_Sandys

Great to see draft #HeatNetworksBill laid in @ScotParl by @ScotGovEnergy today 👏

Heat networks can grow our use of #renewable heat & cut emissions on the path to #NetZero

Here's a rundown of the key policies in the Bill (THREAD) @ScotRenew 🔥

parliament.scot/parliamentaryb…
The Bill will introduce a Scottish Heat Networks License, to technical standards & customer service (within devolved powers). Important to ensure we build high-quality #HeatNetworks in future (2/9)
A ‘Network Wayleave Right’: license will confer powers to lay pipes to the edge of a building, inspired by the Danish obligation to connect. Won’t solve the anchor load problem but will address issues around if/where pipes can go. Who pays is key question #climatechange (3/9)

Remember: When you object to #NetZero, you are not required to state your belief in or evaluation of any scientific hypothesis.

All you need to say, "I don't give my consent and I was not asked for it".

The entire agenda is illegitimate. And that's all you need to know or say.
If pressed, you can say, "we can talk about science AFTER there is an agreement that the policies will be decided democratically, and there is no obstacle to open, transparent public debate".

#NetZero is a war on democracy and against the public.
The #NetZero hacks are trying to trick hundreds of thousands of your pounds out of your pocket.

You do not need to argue with them on their terms.
