Thanks to @GeoffCutmore & @cnbcKaren for this morning's chat on #SquawkBox.

I did TRY to find something positive to say - honest, folks!

Following are the notes I sent the team before the show:-

Ok. So here goes...

Something I've mentioned on here: the enormous scale of Europe's energy problem runs into the €trillions. The #AmpelDesGrauens "Doppel-Wums" -'bazooka' - relief package is €200bln & doubts are *already* being voiced whether will suffice.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe BY FAR

it also has an ENORMOUS energy density.

So why is the future of #GreenHydrgoen so uncertain?

Why are analysts so skeptical of its widespread adoption?

🧵A THREAD🧵 Image
Problem 1:

Sure Hydrogen is energy dense.. gravimetrically

it blows other hydrocarbons (and batteries) out the water

and burning it IS CLEAN!

BUT... Image
its low volumetric density makes it difficult to handle - it must be cooled to 253 K to transport as a liquid

in other words.. Image

📰📊 @BrookingsInst takes a look at the role of 🇨🇳#China in #nickel from 🇮🇩#Indonesia following our report on China's overseas #coal projects:

brookings.edu/blog/up-front/…
Captive coal power plants in 🇮🇩#Indonesia highlight a loophole in 🇨🇳#China’s no new overseas #coal pledge & Indonesia’s domestic policy.
Two new #CaptiveCoal plants on China-backed #nickel & #steel complexes secured construction & purchasing agreements from Chinese firms in 2022.
Last week, a presidential regulation in 🇮🇩 #Indonesia listed “National Strategic Projects” as exempted from their moratorium on new #coal — a move that may endanger its #NetZero targets.

#PostTruthEconomics aka Trussonomics or Trumponomics is the economics being followed by #PostTruth governments that ignore economic expertise and formal forecasting & scenario analyses in favour of evidence-free policies based on ideology or populism - a thread
In the UK, the #budget2022 is a prime example: no @OBR_UK costings with scenarios based on alternative assumptions; policy changes based on wishes & hopes, rather than evidence; facile & ad hoc justifications (trickle-down economics); bluster & mis-speaking arrogance; and lies.
One feature of #PostTruthEconomics is the co-option of non-mainstream, outlier, ideological, or dead economists to provide confident justification, at least of aspects of the policies, e.g. for #budget2022 Prof Patrick Minford @JamesVa72538332

Looking forward to an insightful discussion on the impact of today's #MiniBudget on government's the #Environment, #NetZero and wider #ClimateChange policies #GAEvent
Beginning looking at the economic outlook, @SamAlvis2 warns that the £ has dropped in response to today's mini budget, and that we can expect a recession to be "looming" #GAEvent
On #Energy, Alvis says that a lack of OBR forecasts means we are not sure how much this will cost, but we we can be certain that there will be significant borrowing to help fund these support schemes #GAEvent

🚨 New paper 🚨

Green #hydrogen and derived #efuels are critical for #climate #mitigation, but when will they be available at scale?

In a new Nature Energy study, we look at a key bottleneck: the market ramp-up of #electrolysis capacity.

Summary 🧵⬇️

nature.com/articles/s4156…
2/ #GreenHydrogen, produced from renewable electricity via electrolysis, is vital for the #EnergyTransition. In the #EnergyCrisis hydrogen is also considered an option to limit Europe's fossil fuel imports.

However, scaling up supply is a huge challenge!
3/ There's a lot of momentum in electrolysis project announcements. This is also much needed because global capacity needs to grow a staggering 6,000-8,000-fold from 2021-2050 to meet #NetZero scenarios. Yet, most projects still lack an FID, making them uncertain. Image

Already bumped into @Gabeuk & @keithdyer at #NGMNICE22 …. Anyone else here that I know? Image
No #5G roaming for @VodafoneUK subs in France

#NGMNICE22 venue gets two bars of 4G signal, but at least the WiFi is decently fast at about 60Mbps & 7ms latency (even through a VPN)
Interesting focus on #6G “societal requirements & use cases”

Hope to see things like “multiple network owner types & models” & “needs to be indoor-primary”

… and not too much blather about sci-fi visions of a sensory/olfactory metaverse

… & no “flatrate data is bad” rhetoric

Looking forward to what should be a timely and informative briefing on what is likely to be at the top of Liz Truss' in-tray and how her Premiership may respond to the challenges #IfGNewPM
First, @Emma_Norris opens the debate by setting out the range of challenges facing the Truss Government - Brexit, the energy crisis & energy bills, as well as political intrigues in her own party #IfGNewPM
Next @DrHannahWhite opens looking at Truss' leadership campaign. Says Truss' emphasis on "delivery" chimes with an electorate that "wants to move beyond soundbytes and towards action" #IfGNewPM

🚨 | Energy price cap confirmed to rise to £3,549 - up 280% on last winter

💥 Reliance on foreign gas is why bills are so high.

🟢 In pursuing cleaner energy production, the UK has exposed itself to worldwide energy markets and lost energy security

statsjamie.co.uk/high-energy-pr…
The price cap is what a typical average household will pay annually based on use. For some they will pay less, other more.

Ministers will talk about the Ukraine war, that is a factor. But reducing coal use over the past 40 years and reducing North Sea gas has left us exposed.
Additionally the #cop26 #netzero goals signed up to by countries means that more countries around the world are competing for gas, which pushes up demand and pushes up price.

So the UK drive to hit #netzero without an adequate energy security policy is behind the rising bills

1) While market meltdowns🫠 & #Ukraine war FUD😱 may be raining on #Uranium for now⛈️ a huge Shockwave💥 dubbed 'overfeeding'🍼 is already crashing thru the seemingly calm #Nuclear fuel market.🌀⚛️⛏️ I've created a Tutorial👨‍🏫🧵 to help prepare U to ride the coming wave.🌊🏄💰👇2
2) #Uranium is a very different fuel than #coal & #gas that are burned "as is" in #electricity power plants.🏭⚡️ #Nuclear reactor fuel needs to be specially processed & then packaged into fuel rods that are then loaded into reactors to generate #CarbonFree electricity.🌞⚛️⚡️👇3
3) Mined #Uranium⛏️ is processed into drums of Yellow Cake #U3O8🛢️ that in the west are shipped🚢🚛 to plants in Canada, US & France for "Conversion" into a gas form called #UF6 which is then shipped in cylinders🚛 to plants in US & Europe for "Enrichment" into reactor fuel.⚛️👇4

(1/9) I’ve seen a lot of op-eds about how awful it is that #CCS was included in the #IRA. Most lack nuance, because they haven’t clocked that the #energytransition isn’t just about the power sector anymore. Sorry #energytwitter. So, a 🧵 on why carbon capture still has a place.
(2/9) First, I get this. I was a huge #CCS skeptic. Two things changed my mind: modelling pathways to #netzero for materials with my @BloombergNEF team, and the #BNEFNEO team's carbon budgets for industry. Sobering work that taught me a lot.
(3/9) Some industries just can’t do without CCS. Process emissions are just as harmful as combustion. And we’re past the point where abatement of emissions is enough. That means removals, which means #DirectAirCapture.

This is a great move. First, this:
"The authority’s market policy manager, Andrew Doube, noted that it estimated last year that households were on average paying up to $200 more than they should for electricity each year because of the smelter’s current power contract." /2
In 2015 Genesis said it was closing the Huntly #coal-fired power station. But @MeridianEnergy persuaded them to keep it open: part of its Tiwai deal. So the reason we're still burning lots of #coal is b/c of Meridian's deal to give Tiwai massively cheap energy /3
Yet Meridian trades off its 100% renewable image. Sneaky, right? We "need to work together" to get Aotearoa to #NetZero, blah blah (see image).
Meanwhile, over & above our higher power bills, Kiwis also pay millions to Tiwai's Rio Tinto to subsidise its emissions, every year /4

Does the enormously complex issue of #climatechange have to be presented to policymakers, and therefore the public, as the behemoth it really is?

Today I released my second #infographic explainer on the @IPCC_CH #AR6 reports.

eciu.net/analysis/infog…

#SummaryForPeople 🧵
The amazing @skepticscience is even featuring it today, with added commentary, a real honour for a mere student of scientist.

skepticalscience.com/ipcc-explainer…

@theresphysics @BaerbelW @johnfocook @KenCaldeira
So, what does this, the longest explainer I've made yet, actually say?

Like the first edition — eciu.net/analysis/infog… — it kicks off with context about how we arrived at #IPCCAR6, on the @IPCC_CH itself and how it goes about communicating uncertainty.

Have you ever been curious about how public asset managers are trying to figure out implementing Net Zero across portfolios? Bunch of approaches all with their own nuances and pros/cons. GFANZ portfolio alignment released updated guidance - 140 pages. Here are some highlights.🧵
4 categories of alignment metrics: In increasing complexity, they are 1) binary, 2) maturity scale alignment, 3) benchmark divergence, & 4) implied temperature rise (ITR)

Metrics should be simple, transparent, science-based, broadly applicable, aggregable, and incentive optimal Image
Each of these has their own merits and nuances and none of them are perfect in isolation. Unless you have unlimited resource/time, you're likely opting for 1-2 of these approaches.

A drawback of these metrics is that there may be differing data sources and definitions used.

Politics is simpler than people make out.

The Tories are incredibly successful at delivering what their backers want.
Their offshore backers wanted Tories to divert the money we spend on power, water, and transport into their pockets.

Job done. Our pockets are empty and our rivers are full of our shit.

theguardian.com/environment/20…
Government gives them access to our taxes. Elaborate scams were erected to divert obscene amounts under the cover of Covid PPE. Track & Trace, and now #NetZero. Records erased. Untraceable spending.

The biggest organised theft of taxation in history.

#OnThisDay a year ago the @IPCC_CH released its report on #climatescience. Governments endorsed then largely ignored.

How do we get IPCC summaries across to apes with smartphones, especially those roaming corridors of power for whom they're intended? 🧵

eciu.net/analysis/infog…
With much difficulty. But visuals help. They not only steal attention, they have the ability to go directly into long-term memory where they're indelibly etched.

@KateRaworth @waitbutwhy @jamespeshaw
Hence why I made a belated #explainer of the first #IPCCAR6 report, the first of three I'll publish before #COP27.

Better late than never, esp. when the next IPCC compendium won't drop until ~2030, the year when interim carbon-cutting pledges should be being met.
