♊️ DIGITAL TWINS - are a key solution in many digitalised systems .. but what about the energy system?

With @turinginst @CityscapeDigi we've created two demonstrators to begin to paint a picture of how digital twins could support decision-making.

es.catapult.org.uk/project/energy… 1. Energy System Digital Twin - Visual Demonstrator

Provides users with the ability to explore how policy decisions will impact the UK at a national, regional and local level in a much more intuitive way than the current suite of models allow.

NEW REPORT: Up to 75% of local authorities have declared a climate emergency ..

Yet only 15 of almost 400 councils are so far developing clear Net Zero plans that meet the gold standard criteria - called a Local Area Energy Plan.

es.catapult.org.uk/report/the-fut…

1/6 This new report - The future of Local Area Energy Planning in the UK - aims to:

1⃣ Offer a clear LAEP definition
2⃣ Assess the scale & quality of Net Zero planning underway
3⃣ Identify barriers & challenges to delivery
4⃣ Assess common methods, guidelines, models & tools

UK ETS BLOG - Part 6: New carbon regulator could shape a world leading UK emissions accounting regime to underpin the UK Emissions Trading System and our #NetZero ambitions - says Dr @danialsturge. 1/6

es.catapult.org.uk/comment/uk-ets… UK ETS Blog - Part 5: The UK only just left the world’s largest carbon market – the EU Emissions Trading System. But should we already be thinking about linking the smaller UK market to its larger and older European cousin? 2/6

🤷‍♀️What are Smart Local Energy Systems?

🤷‍♂️Do they need a Code of Practice (CoP) to thrive?

We take a close look at how other parts of the #energy system use a CoP to improve best practice standards:

es.catapult.org.uk/news/do-smart-…

Below is a thread with some key takeaways👇 1⃣ Codes of Practice (COP) help to identify opportunities to improve best practice and identify shared risks.

⚡This brings clear benefits as it acts to protect customers and improves investor confidence in the wider #energy sector.

The Energy Data Taskforce has delivered a strategy for a Modern, Digitalised Energy System based two key principles – filling in the data gaps through requiring new and better-quality data, and maximising its value by embedding the presumption that data is open. #EDTF A staged approach should be taken with the first two visibility steps driven and encouraged by regulation, while operational optimisation and open markets can be developed from increased access to data..

To coincide with #fuelpovertyawarenessday our Fair Futures lead @rrchard1 has authored an opinion piece on Low Carbon Innovation and Energy Justice:
es.catapult.org.uk/news/will-low-…

Here is a thread outlining the key points ... We've got 2 big challenges:

1. We need to work out how we replace over 22 million gas boilers in our homes to meet 2050 emissions targets.

2. Yet 2.5 million households struggle to afford to warm their homes today, according to figures from @NEA_UKCharity.
