300 days of Russian war of aggression against Ukraine🇺🇦 - what are the main disinformation narratives and how has the discourse changed? -overview🧵
Russian "justifications" for the war.

At the beginning: "denazification", "NATO threat", "genocide in Donbas", "history"

Later added: "desatanization", "fight against homosexuality", "potential defeat in Ukraine threatens Russia's existence", "defending new territories"
Public discourse 1:

February/early March
"poor Ukrainians"

Same people after Ukrainians have liberated a lot of territory:

"Ukrainians should not escalate" "both sides must negotiate and seek peace." "we suffer from high energy prices"
Public discourse 2☑️

February/early March

"poor Ukrainians"

Same people after Ukrainians have liberated a lot of territory:

"Ukraine needs humanitarian and military aid to defend its right to exist and liberate all occupied territories."
Public discourse 3

February/early March

"poor Ukrainians, but what about Donbass, what about NATO, what about language laws", "Russia's army is superior"

Same people after Ukrainians have liberated a lot of territory:

"Zelenskyy is a warmonger, we should give up on Ukraine"
Public discourse 4

February/early March

"war is sad"

now:

"well, there are a lot of wars, I am tired of it, let's watch football (soccer)"
How politicians & commentators speak about the war:

Is the aggressor (Russia) mentioned or just "war" as if it were a natural disaster?

Is the suffering in the occupied areas mentioned or is the criticism limited to the fighting?

#Bothsidesism and #Falsebalance are on the rise
Unchanged since February 24: Russia denies war crimes, threatens the West with nuclear weapons and demonizes Ukraine. New (invented) "justifications" for war do not replace the old ones, but complement them.
The spreaders of Russian propaganda have become more organized, but so has democratic civil society against disinformation. Governments in Europe do far too little against Russian disinformation, especially in German-speaking countries.

The 2 main false narratives about the Russian war on Ukraine🧵

"Ukraine is responsible for the war in Donbas and has banned Russian language, so somehow Russia had a reason to intervene."

"The suffering in Ukraine would end when the fighting is over, when Ukrainians surrender."
The war in Donbas since 2014 was coordinated and financed by Moscow. Russian warlords (Igor Girkin, Borodai), Russian weapons and "soldiers on leave" and extremist mercenaries were sent (Wagner, Rusich, "Orthodox Army"..) There was neither an "ethnic conflict" nor "civil war".
Russian language was never forbidden. Zelensky's TV series, like many TV programs and magazines, are in Russian, people speak Russian in Kyiv, as well as in other cities. Klitschko, for instance, gave an interview in Russian in July 2022.

Unfortunately still necessary:

- Russia attacked Ukraine, not vice versa☑️
- Russian narratives are based on lies☑️
- It's not enough to stop the war, occupation is not acceptable☑️

Not "Western Propaganda" but Russian propaganda shows the real face of the Kremlin's regime🧵
Occupation is unacceptable because it means torture, rape, re-education camps and the murder of members of civil society. Not to forget child abduction.

Russian narratives about the last 8 years justifying the full-scale invasion are false. Russia invaded Ukraine 8 years ago.
There has never been a "civil war" or "ethnic conflict" in Ukraine. The Russian language is not banned and never was, which can be easily proven. The war in eastern Ukraine (Donbas) in 2014 was ignited by Russian forces and intelligence operatives paid and armed by the Kremlin.

Russia has taken itself out of any credible "negotiations" because of constant genocidal rhetoric toward Ukrainians, annexations, various war crimes, re-education camps and child abductions.

Nobody can trust this regime anymore. 🧵
One example of the situation on which basis "negotiations" are very difficult.

Putin's new military commander in Ukraine, Surovikin, a notorious radical:

"On several occasions, soldiers under Gen Surovikin's command have been accused of violence against civilians. "

So Igor "Strelkov" Girkin from Moscow is back in Ukraine...who is the notorious warlord?

He was "minister of defense" of the "Donetsk people's republic"

Girkin is the main subject for the downing of passenger flight #MH17

He even admits that he ordered war crimes in Donbas🧵
About the Russian aggression in Donbas 2014 he said: "I pulled the trigger" (to engage war) and "I could not even find 1000 locals willing to fight" then Russian "tourists" came, tousands of them, mostly radicals and regular soldiers "off duty".
In 2014, 3 guys got tortured and killed in Donbas, because they tried to raise the Ukrainian flag.

Girkin: "Yes, these people were shot on my orders. Do I regret that they were shot? No, they were enemies."

Peace in Ukraine is more than the absence of war:

The Russian occupation regime means murder of civil society, torture, rape, "re-education camps", and kidnapping.

If we ignore that, we ignore reality🧵
Warlord Gubarev: "we come to convince you (to become Russians), if we can't convince you, we will kill you, 1 million, 5 million, or we eradicate all of you."
In 2014, 3 guys got killed for raising a Ukrainian flag in Donetsk region. When Russian officer Igor Girkin was asked about this war crime, he said: "yes, I ordered it, they deserved it, they are our enemies."
