Annual Reviews are incredibly powerful tools

And NOW is the time to build the systems to enable the perfect review at the end of 2023

Here's how to set it up in @tana_inc:
First, you'll want to record your wins!

Create a supertag #win – and on your daily node, simply write down any wins you have and tag them with it.

This supertag has two fields set up, "Life Theme" and "Year":
The "Life Theme" lets you record where your win happened:
I have set up these themes:

🌞 Health (Physical, Mental, Spiritual)
💸 Wealth (Investing, Spending, Earning)
❤️ Relationships (Friends, Family, Romantic)
🥳 Experiences (Travel, Leisure, Hobbies)
🏗️ Business
(By the way, I have the idea for collecting wins [and misses, coming right up] and these life-themes from @Nicolascole77 and @dickiebush's Annual Review guide – check it out here:
theyearlyreview.com )
The second field is the "Year" field.

Make it an instance-field for the supertag #year, and auto-initialize it "to ancestor with this supertag".

This means the field is auto-filled with the current year, as long as you tag something on your daily node. Super neat!
You also want to record your misses, of course – so create a supertag #miss as well!

Same fields, "Life Theme" and "Year", and you're set!

I've added a couple of more fields to this supertag, though:
I use it to prompt a mini lessons learned report.
So I prompt myself with these additional fields for my misses:

"Actual Outcome" – what actually happened
"What worked well, why?"
"What could be improved and how"

Plus open sections where I can think about lessons learned and how I can apply them in the future
And that's all you need for during the year!

You can, of course, also set up the yearly review supertag already:
By adding live searches for your #wins and #misses everything you write down on your daily nodes will collect automatically.
And a BONUS hack:
By using the "Less Than" and "Greater Than" operators in live searches, you can do trivial monthly reviews too!

Because you write down your wins and misses on the daily node, you can use the "Calendar date" system field to find all the wins of a month!
I really hope you've found this thread helpful!

52 Books in 52 Weeks – Let's go!

Incidentally, @tana_inc is the PERFECT tool to follow along and taking notes on these books.

It can even prompt you every day with the current book on the list!

Let me show you how to set it up:

First, copy the link to this public, read-only Tana workspace I made into your own, personal workspace.

Should look like this in the end:

app.tana.inc/?nodeid=_hYis5…
Click on the node of that workspace (the rainbow-colored bullet point) and then go to Options > "Add to Sidebar"

You NEED to be bored more

That's something I've noticed (again...) over the holidays.

Boredom is your greatest creative resource – it's a tremendous source of activation energy for generating output.

Hear me out:
I had a *great* time over the holidays – lots of family time, great food, much needed rest.

And...I got bored. REALLY bored.

But I didn't allow myself an immediate fix for that boredom – I especially restricted my social media time.

And something funny happened...
The more bored I got, the more ideas I had.
It was almost too much!

Most of them I wrote down – that was the only thing I was allowed to do.

No implementation, no project planning...just dumping the ideas somewhere.

And I noticed something:

Is Roam or Tana the better TfT program for academia/knowledge management?

Got this question from a customer today, and thought I'd provide my reasoning as of December 2022 for everyone.
Tana is still in early access – which means that there are important features lacking for a full academic workflow.

Writing long-form text in Tana isn't really fun imo, and getting what you have written out of Tana is even worse.
The affordances by the _incredible_ zoteroRoam plugin are hard to beat – nothing comparable exists in Tana at the moment.

Sure, you can use Tana Paste to get things into Tana, but Citekey support etc. are lacking in Tana.

Yesterday Tana released a new feature that has blown my mind: Semantic Functions

I've made a video about it (linked at the end) because I think it's a huge deal that hints at great future capabilities.

Let's dive in:
Tana's fields have always provided a great way to give links between nodes meaning, make them legible.

A "book" as a field "Author" that links to a node tagged "Author" – 'book has author'. Image
This has enabled powerful search features in Tana: "find all books by $Author" is an easy thing to build! Image

You do not need my Tana course.

Seriously, Tana makes it incredibly easy to get started, has brilliant onboarding, and there are a TON of free resources out there to get started.

You don't need any course to be productive in Tana.
If you want to learn the very basics of Tana, check out my videos on Youtube – they are free, and after watching a couple YT is probably going to suggest tons of other videos from the amazing community to you.

And don't overthink getting started either...

Yes, Tana allows you to build super complex and super powerful systems.

Yes, that's one of the reasons I LOVE Tana.

But just getting started and tagging things at all gives you so much value.
And you can always change your supertags down the line, add and remove!

Let ChatGPT build your Tana Supertags for you!

Since the first day of using ChatGPT I can't stop playing around with it.

And so of course I took @bragebang's tweet on how ChatGPT can help come up with schemas for @tana_inc as inspiration...
to see how far you can push ChatGPT to help you with building supertag systems for Tana.

Turns out: quite far!
With the prompt in the image, you get a great list of concepts for a sales database...
But as you can see here, you can push this much further and get something that's _almost_ ready to be pasted into Tana:

I say almost, because if you paste it like that, it's not going to work – you need "example content" before each supertag.
