I was waiting for the results of the 14th vote on #Speaker when I saw Kevin #McCarthy walking toward us.
Within seconds, a confrontation and fight broke out. Just a few feet from me, a newly elected member eager to get sworn in and start a job I’ve dreamed of doing for years.
It all happened on the floor of the House of Representatives, in the waning moments of #January6th and the second anniversary of the violent attack on our Capitol.
The whole thing made me sick to my stomach.
What we witnessed was such selfish, chaotic behavior - and by the very people who would take the reins of the House moments later.
These are the folks in charge now.
What they did was offensive to the Country, and to all those who believe in the the very real promise of public service. It was disrespectful to the Clerk and House personnel, and to the staff and families that had been working and waiting for days to start the 118th Congress.
Now these folks control the House, and will determine if our government is funded, and whether or not people will get their healthcare or Social Security checks.
They will decide if we default on our loans, which will send us into a global financial meltdown.
Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, Majorie Taylor Green, Paul Gosar, Adam Biggs and way too many others in this Chaos Caucus proved this week that they run the Republican Conference.
McCarthy can try and work with us. But Gaetz and others will vote to remove him if he does.
I can now say with confidence that our leadership and members will work with McCarthy and the other Republicans in Congress. To do so, they will have to work very hard to remove this chaos and extremism.
We’ll be here to help.
I’m not sure I can recall a time I’ve been more eager to get home than I am today.
Boy do we have a lot of work to do.
