Two days after the two-year anniversary of the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, a scary analogue is unfolding in Brazil, where massed crowds are invading Congress. The US and Brazilian anti-democratic movements are linked and both have ties to Steve Bannon. 1/
Second Tweet in David Adler's thread. Video from Brazilian news sources. But for the color of the flags, this could be from the US Capitol. If the analogy is correct, there will be someone behind the scenes directing. 2/
In September 2021, a similar 'riot' broke out in support of then-president Jair Bolsanaro (now avoiding arrest in Florida). Former Trump aide Jason Miller and Breitbart 'journalist' Matthew Tyrmand were there; Miller was detained by Brazilian police. 3/
theguardian.com/world/2021/sep…
Jason Miller, who had just founded the social media platform GETTR (expanding a project by Steve Bannon and Guo Wengui), appeared on Bannon's War Room even as the 2021 Brazilian 'riot' unfolded and talked of the mob's "enthusiasm for free speech". 4/
This long thread by US-born, Brazil-based journalist Brian Mier explains how the 2021 riots were openly planned online, much as America's US Capitol attack was. 5/
In October 2022, as the unpopular Bolsanaro was losing at the polls, Steve Bannon and Matthew Tyrmand declared on his War Room show (broadcast on Jason Miller's GETTR) that the election was stolen. Now 3 months later, a riot. Same playbook as in the US. 6/
nacla.org/trump-allies-c…
Literally the same talking points as in the US: declare the election stolen based on changes from early returns. This Tweet by Matthew Tyrmand is from same article by Laura Scofield / Agência Pública linked above. Note that Tyrmand is also a board member for Project Veritas. 7/
Steve Bannon amplified the bogus election-fraud claims of Oct. 2022: "Tyrmand's analysis shows exactly how they did it". Same playbook. As in the US, the Brazilian system held and Bolsonaro was declared the loser. He seemed to accept it - but maybe not. 8/
On the morning of January 5, 2021, the day before the Capitol attack, then-President Trump talked to both Steve Bannon and Jason Miller. They called him; he took their calls. It is the same players, everywhere. 9/
govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GP…
Dec. 2022, Matthew Tyrmand called for the Brazilian military to step in and adjudicate the vote: "if they have to use force, so be it, that is their constitutional role.." 10/
Tyrmand is live-Tweeting the current Brasilia 'riot' as well. 'Protestors' have now ripped off the door to the office of a judge of the Superior Electoral Court. Tyrmand approves, says the court "illegally & unconstitutionally blocked military audit of machines.." 11/
Let's remember that Matthew Tyrmand was in the audience at the NYYRC last month when Marjorie Taylor Greene said that if she and Steve Bannon had been in charge of the Jan 6 attack, they'd have won. (Greene got her start in a Project Veritas op too). 12/
The Bolsonaristas in Brasilia have now breached the Congressional building. David Adler is assembling video clips. Having watched Jan 6 video for 2 years, i can attest - it is the same playbook. And the same people. 13/
A note for journalists: though Tyrmand sells himself now as the voice of Poland, he's US born and bred; US mom; Polish dad died when he was little. He says himself he had no Polish culture growing up. Visited Poland first in 2010, got citizenship 2012. 14/
neweasterneurope.eu/2014/02/18/my-…
The vandalism in Brazil is worse than that at the US Capitol. Here's the Supreme Court. Options are less in Brazil since inauguration is over; Lula is president & Bolsonaro is sulking in Florida - but enough destruction might pull in the military. 15/
Brazilian President Lula responds forcefully, as he needs to. He calls the invaders fascists, then calls for two important things the US has not yet done. First, understand the security failure at the Capitol. Why was the attack not anticipated? 16/
Second, Lula vows to track down and punish those who financed the 'riot'. The mob in Brasilia came from elsewhere. Those who funded that travel knew what they were buying. The US has not yet reckoned with those who paid for our own Capitol attack. 17/
Note an important difference: the US was a "self-coup" attempt, with Trump still controlling the federal government. DC city police saved the day. The Brazil attack came after Lula was sworn in. Local govt. was complicit, but the feds could move fast. 18/
And a parallel: Brazilian version of #SeditionHunters has started immediately. The call to collect video is spearheaded by a celebrity - Brazilian YouTuber Felipe Neto, with 44 million YT subscribers. Civil society is alive in Brazil too. 19/
Let's flag it again: Laura Scofield of Agência Pública in Brazil has tracked for months how the coup was organized on social media, & the roles of Bannon and Tyrmand. Some of the best political reporting anywhere & readable by all via Google translate. 20/

Impossible to overstate how important this is: Kevin McCarthy became speaker by giving Congressmen who sought to overthrow the vote (e.g. Jim Jordan) new sweeping power to "review" criminal investigations and see classified information. Read thread and article by @kyledcheney. 1/
Here is the Politico article but read entire thread for details. Next Tweets will be Jim Jordan items from the Jan 6 "Big Timeline". 2/
politico.com/news/2023/01/0…
Timeline items:
* Jan 2, Jim Jordan leads a conference call with members of Congress discussing how to delay certification of the vote.
* Jan 5, Jordan gets a memo from former Blackwater executive (and DoD official) Joseph Schmitz suggesting what Pence should do on Jan 6.

Good morning America. Two years ago at this time, crowds in DC were streaming in towards the Ellipse, though gates were not open yet for Trump's rally. Ali Alexander was up since 4 AM. Courtney Holland, Scott Presler, & Rose Tennent of Stop the Steal laughed as they walked in. 1/
By 8:39 AM the National Mall was starting to fill up. The atmosphere was cheerful, almost a party. Most of the non-VIP crowd saw no point in going through security to sit in the seats; they gathered on the Mall instead and watched the overflow screens. 2/
After last-minute drama, the first speaker hits the stage 9:06 AM: "I'm Congressman Mo Brooks..and I've got a message that I need you to take to the Capitol." "Today is the day American patriots start taking names and kicking ass." You can watch. 3/

The $1M-plus that Donald Trump Jr is getting from Rumble isn't as much as the $4B Jared Kushner got from the Saudis, but surely it's time to talk about quid pro quos and the Peter Thiel/Devin Nunes social media play. What is Rumble getting for their $? 1/
axios.com/2023/01/03/don…
Rumble has long supported the alt-right - its founder says his goal was to make "infrastructure that is immune to cancel culture". In 2021, it got fresh cash from billionaire Peter Thiel (via his protegee & now-Ohio Senator JD Vance, who he'd set up at Narya Capital). 2/
One of Rumble's first moves after Thiel's takeover was to pay prominent pro-Russia voices for content: Glenn Greenwald & Tulsi Gabbard. Both claimed to be "left", now shill Putin's propaganda. Their deal was only $100s of K, less than Trump Jr's, but still an odd investment. 3/

FYI: the @January6thCmte's new website with a version of the physical attack is....not complete. Really makes you wonder why so much is left out. The NYT had better analyses months ago. This omits major breaches, all coordination, and all Alex Jones...The story is, why? 1/
The world is watching our response to an attack on our nation's Capitol. Sure, this kind of analysis requires exhaustive patience, long experience with spatio-temporal data, & a dedication to finding the truth, but we have people who can do that. What is the excuse here? 2/ Image
The unsung heroes of January 6 are the DC government & police. They understood what was happening. Here's MPD Cmdr Glover, who directed the fight on the W. Plaza: "it was well coordinated with ... military or combat or tactical experience." "like..a War College exercise". 3/ Image

Some new insights & concerns from the J6C depositions. First, the report on foreign interference may be thin. The J6C asked Parler's John Matze only about content moderation (L), not how he became CEO of a social media firm on returning from Russia with his new bride (R). 🧵 1/
Matze's story should raise eyebrows: a 23-year-old software engineer meets the gorgeous Alina Mukhutdinova in Las Vegas, goes with her to Russia, returns after a year to launch a social media platform with $ from mysterious billionaire Rebekah Mercer. 2/

There are new insights on $. Donor Julie Fancelli used Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA to funnel at least $1.5M to pay for Stop the Steal buses and the Ellipse rally itself - invoices went to TPUSA. Charlie pled the 5th, but the deposition show how much committee knew. 3/

@RepRiggleman @AaronBlake So far: with Caroline Wren's help, Julie Fancelli
* issued $1.5M to Charlie Kirk's TPUSA, which paid for buses & paid Event Services for Ellipse rally work
* sent a wire transfer for $200K for Alex Jones and Roger Stone fees
* possibly paid for Roger Stone's jet (via Wren)
1/
@RepRiggleman @AaronBlake That's from reading 5 depositions: Roger Stone, Alex Jones, Charlie Kirk, Enrique Tarrio, John Eastman.

Fascinating that TPUSA processed the Ellipse fees, and that Caroline Wren is in the middle of it all brokering between competing factors.

The Committee missed much though. 2/
@RepRiggleman @AaronBlake Omissions that I see:
Under-emphasis on
* centrality of Proud Boys
* the deep ties of Stone & Jone to Tarrio & Biggs before they became Proud Boys leaders
Missed
* PBs chatting about coordinating with Alex
* Alex & Ali marching up the Capitol steps
