Chris Kang: Glacial Northwest's contract with the @Teamsters expired. The contract had a no-strike clause but the contract expired, & the company was put on notice of a strike.

Chris Kang: The workers who were on jobs brought the cement trucks back & left them running so they didn't damage the equipment. The company didn't know what to do--no one knows how to run, drive, or empty them. They lost a day's worth of concrete.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice
Chris Kang: That's what strikes do--show the value of employees. The company decided to sue the union, & now the case is being heard by the Supreme Court.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: Glacial Northwest is arguing the employees were malicious & tried to cause damage when in fact the opposite was true. The workers probably care more about their trucks than the company does. The point of the lawsuit is to cripple the union.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice
Chris Kang: We have a law in place that says the NLRB should make this decision. They have the expertise. It used to be that the Supreme Court used to defer to other agencies that had more knowledge & experience but no longer.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: Our gov't was set up so that if one branch of gov't got too strong or out of control, one of the other branches would step in. Now the Supreme Court decides everything.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: Even with all the anti-worker rulings the Court is laying down, 2022 still had the most successful unionizing campaigns. Maybe there's a way unions can find a way.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: We need to push & make sure the Supreme Court understands their credibility is on the line. The American people have caught on to them, especially after the Roe v Wade decision was overturned this summer.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: This Court really is an obstacle to working people, & we need to voice that the same way we saw people voice their opposition to the court last summer.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: Sometimes I think Pres. Biden's work on the courts isn't getting enough notice. (con't)
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: (con't) Before we knew who the Dem nominee would be, we said that the next Dem president needs to appoint judges w/ different backgrounds, & this is starting to build a little balance in the lower courts. We need to do this in SCOTUS as well
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice
Rick: These are young justices & will potentially be around for a very long day.
Chris Kang: Start with the premise that the Supreme Court is broken. One way we can fix it is by expanding the Court. (con't)
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: (con't) Nine justices isn't written in the Constitution; the number of justices has been changed 7x before. Even unions like @SEIU support expanding the Supreme Court. Adding four justices would make the Court more balanced.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: It would be a 5-4 Democratic Supreme Court if Pres. Obama hadn't been prevented from appointing a justice & if Amy Coney Barrett hadn't been rammed through the courts.
@cdkang76 @WeDemandJustice #ExpandTheCourt
Chris Kang: The filibuster is standing in the way & we need to do something about it with respect to voting rights & access to abortion. The Repubs are using it to rule as a minority. How many times are they going to attack healthcare?

Ian Millhiser: I was surprised SCOTUS took the case of Glacier Northwest; there are federal protections for strikes. SCOTUS has said if there's any doubt about whether or not a strike is allowed, the NLRB needs to make that determination.
@imillhiser @voxdotcom
Ian Millhiser: This case [Glacier Northwest] is a way to drain the resources of the union. The only reason you'd want two simultaneous lawsuits going on is if you're the employer & you want to financially hurt the union.
@imillhiser @voxdotcom
Ian Millhiser: If there aren't safeguards to prevent employers from bigfooting unions, even if you have the right to strike you can't do it if your union can't afford it or if the union has to spend its money on attorneys & not on the strike fund.

Jasper Martus: We went into Nov feeling very confident our Gov Whitmer would be reelected. We had a Democratic trifecta for the first time in 40 yrs & only the third time in 150 yrs. We've just started our session & are already getting the ball rolling.
@JasperRMartus
Jasper Martus: Eliminating Right to Work is one of our priorities. We've met with the Building Trades, the AFL, & the UAW. The first bill we introduced Wed was to repeal Right to Work. We wanted to start big & bold. These are issues we've talked about for years.
@JasperRMartus
Rick: What you're doing is what Dems across the entire nation need to do: Restore rights to working people.
Jasper Martus: Repubs will go on record being against working people. Issues empowering working families & ensuring union rights should be nonpartisan.

Will Bunch: My friend joked that Biden's Stovetroopers are coming for your gas stoves. The idea that the gov't can weigh in on anything that affects public health... First they came for our guns, now they're coming for our grills.
@Will_Bunch
Will Bunch: Lots of politicians lie abt their education, but Santos went further by saying he was a star volleyball player in college. His mother died 2x, once on 9/11 and again in 2016. He's a compulsive liar. The fact he's been in Congress a week is just appalling.
@Will_Bunch
Rick: Who ran against George Santos? Why didn't they discover these lies? It was nice the NYT came out with the article but it would have been more helpful BEFORE the election!

Carolyn Fiddler: No one wants to know that; it doesn't help anyone. No one cares. It's the Fox News-ification of Congress.

Jason Davis: A strike is always the last course of action we want to take. We're on day 165 of the Ingredion strike. I'm so proud of Local 100G in Cedar Rapids, IA; we have NO ONE who has crossed the picket line, despite it being hard on members & families
@BCTGM #IngredionStrike
Jason Davis: We've had toy drives & food drives; we still have a small number of donations coming in to help striking workers put food on the table. The strike was especially hard over the holidays.
@BCTGM #IngredionStrike
Rick: This is a wildly profitable corporation: The CEO pocketed over $10 million, or 449 times what the workers on the picket line are making. It's not that the company doesn't have the money, they just don't want to share it with the workers.
