Right now, the House Judiciary Committee is having a hearing on "the Threat to Individual Freedoms in a Post-Roe World." Our liberties are at stake. Watch and listen here:…
Chairman Nadler makes it clear: conservative judicial activists on the Supreme Court are threatening our arc towards progress and collective freedom. Under the reasoning of the Dobbs decision, other individual freedoms are under attack.
Of course Rep. Jordan (1) cites the Court's opinion cabining the impact to the right to abortion as though they didn't pull the same bait and switch with the ACA birth control cases, (2) mischaracterizes WHPA, and (3) cries about people being upset with the Justices.

When a Republican says "The US is a republic, not a democracy" they are just trying to avoid having to answer for their abandonment of the lawful democratic practices that used to be valued and agreed to by both sides.

Here's how the brainwashing works:
Until relatively recently, the Republican party's position was that the US is a democratic country, as opposed to one ruled by a military junta, absolute monarchy, or an actual communist party.

Direct democracy means that all decisions are made by voters. That's unworkable...
Most of the industrialized countries of the world are representative democracies.

That means that voters elect representatives to represent their general views when decisions need to be made.

A version of the democratic process is used to elect those representatives.

🚨Let's understand what's happening. Republicans have gamed our democracy to move a radical right-wing agenda. They couldn't do it by winning elections, so installed a Supreme Court to do—or rather undo—everything—civil rights, separation of church & state, regulation by experts.
Democracy's on life support. Next year cld see the fatal blow: the Supreme Court allowing the GOP to so warp elections, "free & fair" will be a joke.

We must grasp what's happening, end denials & paralysis & ACT—while we still can. #ExpandTheCourt or doom democracy & the planet.
💯🚨 This Supreme Court could make Eastman's unconstitutional coup a legal reality next year! 4 are already open to the fringe GOP "independent state legislature” theory, which gives UNCHECKED power over federal elections to state legislatures—limiting even state courts to check.

I hesitate to try to wrap up this term, when so many of its devastating effects are just starting to be felt. But here it goes.
The Supreme Court is now about the raw exercise of right-wing power. 1/?
Republicans are using the court to unleash a revolution. They’re taking a sledgehammer to every principle & precedent of the last century that had been moving us slowly toward a society where women, POC, LGBTQ+, religious minorities & others had a shot at equality.
They want to tear it *all* down. And they’re doing it at breakneck speed. Abortion rights. Voting rights. Climate justice. Separation of church and state. Gun violence prevention. Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone.

Adding 4 Justices to SCOTUS is neither “extreme” nor “court packing.” The current 6-3 conservative majority that is going to overturn women’s right to bodily autonomy is extreme and the result of GOP court packing. 70% of Americans cannot be represented by 30% of the court.
You want to restore legitimacy to SCOTUS? Then #ExpandTheCourt and #ImpeachClarenceThomas
Letting 6 illegitimate abominations who were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote and confirmed by a GOP senate majority that represents less than 1/3 of the country overturn fundamental rights for over half the women and girls in America will be fucking catastrophic

Justice Sotomayor’s dissent on Texas’ monstrous new abortion ban that flouts all judicial precedent and is flagrantly unconstitutional is
🔥 🔥 🔥 and places her on the record as denouncing this malicious and grotesque injustice in a way that solidifies her advocacy for women.
“The Court’s order is stunning. Presented with an application to enjoin a flagrantly unconstitutional law engineered to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights & evade judicial scrutiny, a majority of Justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand.”
“Last night, the Court silently acquiesced in a State’s enactment of a law that flouts nearly 50 years of federal precedents. Today, the Court belatedly explains that it declined to grant relief because of procedural complexities of the State’s own invention.”

Some parasitic insects lay their eggs in other living things. The larvae hatch and eat the live host from the inside out, leaving an empty shell behind.

The Supreme Court is doing the same with the Voting Rights Act, state/church separation, and, coming soon, abortion rights.
SCOTUS is leaving behind the empty shells of the Voting Rights Act, the First Amendment, and reproductive rights, while not actually striking down any statutes or overturning any precedent. This one weird trick suggests incremental change, not massive legal rewrites.
It's dishonest, but also political. Directly striking down or overruling, for instance, the VRA would build more popular support to #ExpandTheCourt. So instead we get the Shelby County and Brnovich cases, which gut the VRA and leave us with an empty husk. ImageImageImageImage
