WHAT IS EUGENICS?

Eugenics is the philosophy and social movement that argues it is possible to improve the human race and society by encouraging reproduction by people or populations with "desirable" traits - termed "positive" eugenics and discouraging reproduction by people with "undesirable" qualities - termed "negative" eugenics.

It became a popular idea in the United States in the 1920s. Here’s a thread 🧵 of some organizations in the Eugenics Movement.
PLANNED PARENTHOOD

History • Founded by Margaret Sanger, who was a supporter of eugenics in the early 20th century. Sanger advocated for birth control as a means of controlling population growth and improving genetic quality.

Controversy • While modern Planned Parenthood disavows eugenics, its historical association with Sanger’s views is often debated.
AMERICAN EUGENICS SOCIETY • AES

History • Founded in 1926, the AES promoted eugenics in the United States through public education, research, and lobbying.

Impact • The society influenced policies leading to forced sterilizations and restrictive immigration laws based on eugenic principles.
