1/ The Wagner Group's enormously bloody assault on Soledar is motivated by Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin's wish to strengthen his hand against the Russian Ministry of Defence in directing the war in Ukraine, according to the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel. ⬇️
2/ According to a source (apparently a Wagner insider) quoted by VChK-OGPU, the mercenary company "urgently needs to be replenished in the region of 25-30 thousand people (primarily assault troops) just to make up for the total losses."
3/ (Note that this tracks reasonably well with the casualty figures cited by @michaeldweiss and @JimmySecUK in their article linked below – "the US estimates 4,100 have been killed and another 10,000 injured". The US figures may well be an underestimate.)
news.yahoo.com/russian-mercen…
4/ The source says: "If 50-60,000 people are added, then we can use the same tactics to devour Bakhmut (with the condition of having a supply of ammunition)".

Wagner's ammunition supply has been a significant problem recently, as the video below shows.
5/ VChK-OGPU comments: "Now, after Soledar, the question of big negotiations between Prigozhin and the Ministry of Defence is inevitable. And Prigozhin only needed Soledar in order to replay the old arrangements in this relationship; he has put everything on the line.
6/ "From a purely military point of view, the capture of Soledar at a cost in manpower losses is entirely unprofitable. Soledar is such an absolute point of concentration of dead per square metre.
7/ "However, Soledar is a military prologue for negotiations between Prigozhin and the Ministry of Defence. It is the Musicians' [Wagner's] main trump card.
8/ "Given that the military has returned [Col Gen Aleksandr] Lapin [to command], we can expect a direct confrontation between the Musicians and the Ministry of Defence if negotiations fail.
9/ "Prigozhin is showing that he is prepared to do things 'if not in a good way, then in the right way'."

According to VChK-OGPU's source, "Prigozhin personally gave the command to pile on with all they had.
10/ "And here one should honestly understand: there are no fairy tales, when taking a well-fortified area by storm, the attackers will always suffer higher losses. Soledar is a solid fortress with underground communications, which was broken through by assault groups.
11/ "The military considered this assault a completely impossible task, so for Prigozhin personally it was considered a matter of principle. Therefore the overall casualty figures were very high.
12/ Among themselves, [Wagner members] discuss Prigozhin’s phrase that Soledar now 'recently eats more people a day than on the Musicians' entire front in a week', but don't take this as accurate mathematics, Prigozhin likes artistic turns of phrase."
13/ The Russian Army has not joined the assault on Soledar directly. VChK-OGPU characterises its role as "sitting somewhere far away and sort of 'not letting them retreat'. It comments:
14/ "The situation is such that even a large compound can easily be lost. Wagner only works in small groups, and the military, with such an approach, would dissolve all coordination."
15/ This presumably reflects the poor communications, coordination and leadership that has plagued the Russian regular forces during the war in Ukraine. Coordination is reportedly such a problem that Wagner has had to act to stop the army firing indiscriminately on its positions.
16/ VChK-OGPU reports that "negotiations between Prigozhin and the Defence Ministry themselves will take place at the end of the whole Soledar operation.
17/ "What Wagner fears: that the military will push for the Musicians to immediately move on to a similarly large-scale assault on Bakhmut. But Prigozhin must not fall for this, because there are simply not enough people physically.
18/ "They have already stretched out all they can from everywhere, the super-replenishment of prisoners has been used up, down to the ground."
19/ "What is expected from the Musicians: that they will now be given a reinforced supply of shells and will start a big mobilisation, so that they can get refuseniks in the right quantities."
20/ The reference to refuseniks is likely linked to earlier reports that Wagner is aiming to forcibly mobilise Russian soldiers who are refusing to fight into World War II-style penal battalions, to be used as cannon fodder.
21/ Recruitment from prisons is now much harder for Wagner, due to news of the massive losses in Ukraine getting back to penal colonies in Russia. A source tells VChK-OGPU that "the flow of 'newcomers' to the private military companies has thinned considerably.
22/ "Those who were ready to go straight away have almost all been taken. And now there is persistent talk in the prisons about the PMCs as 'pure meat and total losses'."/end

1/ Belarus is creating its own version of the Wagner mercenary group, according to a report from Deutsche Welle's Russian service. A private security company called GardServis is said to be increasing its workforce and training to participate in hostilities. ⬇️ Image
2/ DW reports that according to Valery Sakhashchik, a member of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya's 'shadow government' with responsibility for defence and security issues, GardServis has been training with Belarusian special forces for several months.
3/ Founded in 2019, the company is well-connected to elite figures. It's the only private security firm in Belarus that is allowed to possess firearms, under a June 2020 decree by President Lukashenko. It was sanctioned by the EU, Britain and the US in December 2021.

1/ Russian tank repairmen in Belgorod have some explaining to do after they reportedly accidentally set on fire and blew up a T-72 tank they were repairing, also damaging two other tanks. ⬇️
2/ The Russian Bazabazon Telegram channel reports that a fire broke out at a tank repair base in Belgorod on the evening of 12 January, due to a violation of fire safety rules.
3/ The channel reports: "Due to a fire, ammunition detonated on one tank, as a result of which it was destroyed. The fire spread to two other T-72s standing nearby, but they were saved.

1/ Yevgeny Prigozhin's apparently premature announcement of Soledar's capture has reportedly led to a desperate push by Wagner to make it a reality. Wagner is fighting without regard for casualties, not just to gain Soledar, but for Prigozhin's reputation.
2/ The Russian VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports that a source (likely within Wagner) says of the situation at Soledar:

"It's a nightmare there now: the rush to announce a full takeover has led to the fact that one has to operate on the edge of what is possible.
3/ "The Wagnerites are literally being pushed from behind, everyone is being driven there – if Prigozhin personally has already announced a complete capture, then the price of the matter will no longer play a role. Losses for such a small section of the front are wild.

1/ @davidfrum has rightly highlighted the Church of Scientology's hidden role in promoting the so-called 'Fair Tax', which @BruceBartlett discussed in the Wall Street Journal and also in a CBS News piece linked below. I thought I'd add a bit more detail. cbsnews.com/news/scientolo….
2/ Bruce writes in his CBS News piece that the idea of replacing income tax with a national sales tax was promoted by "a man named Steven L. Hayes, the founder of a group called Citizens for an Alternative Tax System (CATS) ... and who was ... a prominent Scientologist."
3/ And as Bruce says, "It wasn't hard to figure out the Scientologists' motives ... The IRS had refused to recognize Scientology as a legitimate church ... To remedy this situation, Scientologists waged war against the IRS."

1/ The independent Russian media outlet 'We can explain' has published accounts from convicts recruited to fight for the Wagner mercenary group. The convicts – who were captured by the Ukrainians, likely at Soledar – have described extraordinarily brutal experiences. ⬇️
2/ One man, a double murderer named Sergei Vereshchagin, says that Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin recruited men from his penal colony with the promise that "there will be work for everyone – both digging and carrying the wounded." The reality was quite different.
3/ Vereshchagin was taken with others to a children's camp in the Luhansk region of Ukraine. "There were no units, no companies, no formations. They unloaded us and said: "You are not Wagner, you are a project, don't even use [your own names]. Because you are just a project.""

1/ Ekaterina Kolotovkina, who gave a notably bellicose speech in Samara a few days ago commemorating the Russian dead in Makiivka, has given an equally bellicose response to widespread criticism of her speech. ⬇️
2/ Translation:

"I never realised that words have such power. Especially if you tell the truth and what you feel.

My speech last night was reposted by all the Ukronazi chat rooms. My chat room was overrun by bots.
3/ Everyone wrote about my fur coat for some reason, pointing out that I'm a general's wife. Look, a fur coat is no indicator of wealth, we live in Russia. And yes, in winter I go in a fur coat, Orenburg shawl and boots. Because it's so warm.
