The breathless news coverage on Harry and Meghan has made #IranianProtesters look like extras in a B movie.
But while the semi-Royal couple has ‘spared’ us no details, Iranians’ abductions, torture and hangings by the #IR go largely unreported.
This has huge ramifications:
1. It signals the fickleness of American foreign policy, and worse, American leadership. From Obama’s “unclench your fist” to Trump’s “maximum pressure” to Biden’s aloofness on ME, our Iran policy looks like disconnected movies in a potentially promising sequel.
2. Underreporting the #IranRevoIution also gives the appearance that the regime’s unspeakable brutality has been successful in deterring/scaring Iranians into submission.
In fact, the opposite has become true.
3. On January 16th the nation-wide demonstrations will be entering their fourth month.
This is unprecedented.
The lead up to 1979 revolution lasted longer but it also had many strategic advantages:
4. A ‘wait and see’ attitude vis-à-vis #Khomeini by the West which couldn’t decide if the Ayatollah was a lunatic, a liberator, or a defense line against the spread of communism.
Ditto for Gulf countries and Saudi Arabia that anxiously felt the heat of Shah’s growing army.
5. A cancer-ridden Shah that couldn’t believe the “ingratitude” of his people and the “inaction” of the West (Answer to History).
An ambivalent army disciplined to protect the Shah but devoted to their communities. Their refusal to open fire tipped the balance for revolution.
6. Today, Iranians on the streets are losing life and limb (and eyes, thanks to targeted pellet shootings) to prove that despite zero advantages they will win.
This is a goal we must support. #HarryandMegan will not improve the geopolitics of ME But a secular free Iran will.
