NEW: @GovofCO Polis will begin his State of the State address with a list of challenges faced by Colorado in his first term, with the notable inclusion of rising hate speech. Will thread details from prepared remarks here. #copolitics
"We’ve gone through a lot these last four years, Colorado," Gov Polis' prepared remarks read. "COVID-19. Shootings. Devastating wildfires. Record inflation. Spiraling hate speech."
Polis' remarks shout out Gandolf from Lord of The Rings, Nikola Jokic, and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone (because of course). "Jokic, Gandalf, Trey and Matt, and Colorado believe the next chapter is the best one - and I do too. Our best days are yet to come."
Polis will call for a country that "respects freedom and the personal health decisions of women, transgender Americans, and all Americans." Polis will call for "secure, accessible elections" and action to "secure our borders and fix our inhumane, broken immigration system."
Polis' prepared remarks include a reference to migrants who "have always come to America in search of freedom, safety and economic opportunity, often escaping brutal oppression from authoritarian communist dictators like Maduro in Venezuela." Says Colorado is supporting migrants.
Polis' remarks directly call out California for "decades of poor planning" leading to a water and electricity crisis, unafforable housing, and jammed freeways. "We are not California, we are Colorado," Polis' remarks read. "And I refuse to let us make those same mistakes."
Polis will call for building affordable housing on state-owned land, plus "flexible zoning to allow more housing, streamlined regulations that cut through red tape, expedited approval processes for projects like modular housing," and more housing near transit.
Polis will call for continued reductions in Colorado's income tax, and making the senior homestead exemption portable so that seniors can enjoy the tax break while downsizing + allowing younger families access to larger homes they no longer need.
Polis will propose $120M in new clean energy tax credits. His prepared remarks reference the "temporary Suncor disaster," which has shut down Colorado's only oil refinery, saying "the only long-term solution is to continue pursuing low-cost, reliable, renewable energy."
Polis will call out "some large hospital systems" for "making record profits, paying zero taxes, and sitting
on enormous reserves while overcharging customers." We've reported that more than half of Colorado's hospitals (many small & rural) are in financial distress.
Polis will call for a ballot measure asking voters to approve using excess tobacco tax money to create more hours of universal pre-K (a program now enrolling families for the first time).
Polis will propose expanding Care Forward Colorado, which allows students to pursue a health care career at a community/technical college at no personal expense, to also include career paths in construction, firefighting, law enforcement, nursing, and early childhood education.
Polis will say Colorado "can and must do better" on crime and will call for "greater penalties for car theft, deterring unlawful weapon possession by felons, and cracking down on ghost guns."
Polis' prepared remarks suggest, but do not explicitly say, that Colorado's Red Flag gun law should be expanded to allow prosecutors (like police or family members) to petition a judge to have someone's guns temporarily seized.
Those are some of the notable portions of Polis' prepared State of the State remarks. @Marshall9News is at the Capitol and has other highlights here:
NEW: Fmr congressional candidate @AadlandforCO, who said the 2020 election was “absolutely rigged,” has announced his candidacy for Chair of the @cologop. Aadland pledged to “restore integrity to our election system.” #copolitics
Aadland’s platform includes ending the mail-in ballot system used by the vast majority of Coloradans, closing Republican primaries to unaffiliated voters, and “getting rid of the current voting machines.”
Aadland was unsuccessful in attracting national GOP support in his run for the open 7th Congressional District seat in Colorado, which Republicans initially thought could be competitive in a friendly year. Aadland lost to @pettersen4co by 15%.
This is the time of year for new starts and second chances. The non-profit CommunityWorks helps Coloradans overcome barriers to employment through job training, apprenticeships, and placement with employers. I'll match the next fifty $5 donations: coloradogives.org/story/2b8cig
CommunityWorks leaders told me they have a particular need to buy work clothes for Coloradans coming out of the justice system. The non-profit has relationships with employers who believe in second chances and are ready to hire.
CommunityWorks offers specialized job training and certificate programs, along with mentorship and career counseling that doesn't end when a participant lands a job. They aim to keep setbacks in life from becoming generational stumbling blocks to self-sufficiency.
The Libertarian candidate being blamed for Republicans' loss in CO-8 didn't have a formal campaign yet he vastly outperformed Colorado's other Libertarian candidates. Also, he rocks. He's the soundman for a metal band. #copolitics
CO-8 Libertarian candidate Dan Ward says he campaigned solely through shows for his band, Driven By Turmoil. The band's song "Shut The F--- Up" became his campaign anthem as they asked listeners to vote against the establishment candidates.
Pollsters and political operatives with both parties weren't sure how Ward won 3.9% of the vote. Five other Libertarian candidates for Congress in Colorado averaged 1.9%. Each had more of a traditional campaign presence than Ward, who says he did not raise or spend any money.
NEW: Sen. @MichaelBennet (D) says he was surprised by his 12-pt margin of victory over @ODeaForColorado (R). Bennet told me he expected an 8-pt win. He pointed to Democrats closing the gap in populous red counties like Douglas and El Paso. #cosen#copolitics
If Bennet serves his entire third full term, he will become the longest serving US Senator from Colorado in a century. But Bennet said he has no desire to grow old in the Senate, as some of his colleagues have done.
Bennet said both he and Gov @jaredpolis (D) could be in the presidential conversation if Biden chooses not to run in 2024. "I think both of us could be in that conversation," Bennet said. "Because Colorado is such an interesting state politically for the country."
UPDATE: Democrat Adam Frisch is poised to upset Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert in CO-3, based on a 9NEWS analysis of remaining ballots, which are largely in counties where Frisch holds strong leads. #copolitics
The Boebert-Frisch race is tied 50-50% but the bulk of ballots yet to be counted, per AP, are in Pitkin County (80% counted, currently Frisch +58, not a typo), Pueblo County (91.6% counted, currently Frisch +9.6), and Garfield County (90% counted, currently Frisch +13.6).
In Pueblo County alone, 9NEWS is told there are 6,000 uncounted ballots. Those ballots may not be counted tonight as election workers are given time to eat and rest.
