Here’s what’s happening: As of February 2023, Amazon Smile is gone.

This is VERY bad news for charitable organizations. Many of us pet pawrents designated animal organizations to get money from our Amazon purchases through #amazonsmile.

Amazon’s email stated “With so many eligible organizations… our ability to have an impact was often spread too thin.”

Says YOU, @amazon. 🙄 Ask any animal organization if the Amazon Smile money made an impact on the animals they care for, and I bet they’d say YES. #amazonsmile

For rescues/shelters, every dollar counts.

More money means more animals cared for.

Even if it wasn’t a ton of money they received, those were dollars used to buy kitten food during kitten season, when shelters are overrun with hungry mouths to feed, for example. #amazonsmile

Amazon will still be making some donations, but it appears that consumers no longer have a choice about where those charitable dollars go.

In their email, I didn’t see any animal organizations listed among the programs they still plan to support. #amazonsmile

My heart hurts knowing that many rescues/shelters will have to make do without these funds.

Especially these days, when prices are always rising.

Yes, I know Amazon is giving them 3 quarters’ worth of funds, but that only helps this year.

What about next year? What then?

I could say more—greedy money-hungry corporations, grumble grumble—but here’s what I’m doing instead:

🚫 I won’t be buying ANY pet products on Amazon. I’ll take all pet-related business elsewhere—like @chewy, who is AWESOME at giving back.

❤️ I’m going to make a “spite donation”—I’m ticked off at Amazon, but I’m going to channel my anger into something positive.

I’ve donated to my favorite shelter—my former shelter Kitty Cottage.

I encourage you to channel your anger into something positive too, and to think carefully about where you buy pet supplies and if those places align with your values.

Remember, where we choose to (or choose NOT to) spend our hard-earned dollars sends a message. #amazonsmile

P.S. The current President & CEO of #amazon isn’t Bezos. It’s Andy Jassy.
