My 10 quick recommendations to SEOs that want to know data.

The most underrated yet extremely profitable skills that your clients need.

Yes, there are a lot of websites that have severe issues.

No, #SEO alone is not enough if they can't find their problems.

Let's see them 🧵
1. Don't just learn to code.

You don't want to be a developer, you should get closer to an analyst, in case.

Code is the weakest part of your work, as you are an SEO.

Storytelling and understanding patterns are where you add value.
2. Most of the industry advice about data is given by people without qualifications.

This alone makes most information factually incorrect.

You can notice it while reading case studies that skip steps.

Practice alone isn't enough, you need basic theory.
3. Focus on the insights, not on the tools.

People should pay for your insights, not for your tech knowledge.

This is what makes you unique.

They can steal your code but not your thought process.

Invest here!!!
4. Tech SEO has literally no connection.

I am a Content SEO who studied Analytics.

Data skills live outside the SEO realm, as you can apply them to any problem.

You don't need to be a Tech SEO because I am not one.

For sure, many will tell you it's a good complementary skill.
5. You need Math but it's easier than you imagine.

Most of the stuff you want to learn is either high school level or basic Stats.

It's mandatory to understand what you are saying but it's not that hard as you think.

Data Science books can guide you at this point.
6. Study what's necessary for your domain (SEO).

Machine Learning is largely overrated for our use cases.

You get more value with Analytics and Natural Language Processing.

I would even tell you to skip models altogether and just work on Analytics.
7. Focus on projects early on.

I don't care about the nth broken links project.

You should work on specific use cases that add value.

Often, it's stuff you've never seen online.

Practice and practice until you are good enough.
8. Being analytical takes time.

You don't get the right mindset in 2 days.

As you practice and learn, you'll notice that questioning plays a crucial role.

Never assume unless you have good reasons.

You should already have this skill as an SEO though...
9. Python or R, no difference BUT...

Pick the former as it's more popular.

Selling yourself is more important than anything else.

#Python is more suitable to communicate with IT professionals and for generic scripting.

But you are still not paid for using it.
10. SQL and databases are essential.

You can start with Python as you'll often deal with CSVs.

Later on, you need to study some SQL for databases.

The synergy between BigQuery and GSC is incredible, and it's needed for large websites.
"But man you don't need them".

Yes, like pretty much anything in SEO.

These are complementary skills that benefit a minority.

If you are in that group, you can add unique value and have the edge.

It's unthinkable to rely on outdated systems in a data world.

The Ultimate Clustering Thread, one of the most crucial parts of Keyword Research.

Save 1000s of hours and spend more time on strategy.

I'll teach you everything you need to know to succeed with it.

Let's demystify and explain the GOAT of #SEO 🧵
First of all, clustering is the process of grouping something.

Your goal is getting groups, given some data points, in your case keywords.

You can also use other data, like pages.

The idea is to get order from disorder.

This is crucial for research.
Clustering is an unsupervised machine learning set of algorithms.

In plain English, you aren't giving the machine any groups.

They have to figure out by themselves how to group them.

And this is why it's so interesting!

Of course, you can also use alternative approaches.

One of the most harmful problems in #SEO, laziness.

You are looking for trouble and 💸 losses.

A disadvantage may snowball and cause exponential damage.

It's better to take calculated risks, especially if you rely on content.

How to prevent disasters and take action 🧵
Let's say you are a publisher.

Most of your content is about news and everything is going great.

One day, you notice that your strategy isn't profitable enough.

You produce more news on related topics but...
It's not enough to compete with other publishers.

If you have built your entire strategy about news, it's hard to abruptly switch to evergreen content.

So the solution here is mitigation.

Achieve a balance between news and evergreen content.

It's almost 2023 and there is a lot to work to do in terms of data literacy.

The #SEO industry has even more profitability potential now.

But many folks focus on superficial things.

Let's see how we can combine value and money with data 🧵
Everyone is talking about AI now.

ChatGPT doesn't add anything new to the table.

You could do the same tasks even before, so I wouldn't say this is a breakthrough for us.

But, the value is there if you know how to use it.
Some boring tasks can be automated via GPT rather than creating rules.

This can be the case for summaries or other tasks where you would need complex models.

The advantage here is the ease of use at the expense of depth.

Still, there is a lot of value for SEO.

The Ultimate Google Search Console Audit, Part 2.

Let's expand on what I and @theDrewDag said before:

- Find opportunities and classify them

- How to find golden opportunities ($$)

- How to interpret and explain data

All in this 2nd short thread on Analytics for #SEO 🧵
The 1st thread explaining the most details is right below.

This is one of the most important threads I've ever written because it covers many details.

The 2nd part of this series adds more depth.

The goal is understanding SEO data and solving problems, not being developers.
I have upgraded my previous work by segmenting by impressions.

This tells you which 0-click queries you should focus on, based on impressions.

Ideally, the small blue region is where you want to look at.

But why? Query bands segmented by impression bands. In plain Englis

Right now #SEO is obsessed with AI, nothing wrong with it.

The issue is that the industry still lacks a decent data culture.

Why do you ask?

Because we've skipped Analytics and the basics.

Let's see how content websites can improve their efficiency 🧵
AI is quite an advanced application of data and is affected by several problems.

Some of them include:

- content quality
-accuracy of information
- ethics (like the community cares)

Without the foundations, there is little we can do.
ChatGPT has some interesting use cases for automation and writing short descriptions.

It falls short of long-form content and original research.

The gurus have been telling you this is the panacea when it's just another AI.
