Women's #IPL franchises

An interesting week is coming up. A total of 29 bid documents (ITT) have gone on sale and five #WIPL franchises are in the fray, waiting to be bought.

Even if a dozen of them come to the bidding table, consider it to be a winning exercise.

+
And will at least a dozen come? Well, it looks like.

Remember -- not every single party that buys the ITT buys because it wants to bid. Some buy it to see what's the business model all about.

So, who all have bought? And who may bid?

+
Who have bought: All 10 men's IPL franchises, Kotak, Haldiram, GMR, Capri Global, Torrent, Adani, JSW (not sure), few agencies, Aditya Birla Group, a pvt equity company & definitely some others.

Who may bid: Expect 8 out of 10 franchises to definitely submit (7 strong) bids.

+
MI, DC (GMR), KKR, RCB, LSG, RR, PBKS, GT.

As I've mentioned earlier -- still not getting the same vibes from CSK & SRH camps. But who knows? Maybe I haven't heard things correctly.

A franchise like CSK staying on board will help the property immensely. Fingers crossed.

+
Outside of the franchises, expect Torrent, Adani, Capri, Kotak etc -- all to submit their bids.

Although, my assumption is, existing men's franchises will be able to put in stronger numbers because they have a steady revenue stream in this business already.

+
The latest sale of media rights ensures franchises will earn Rs 24,000 cr over 5 years between the 10 of them from broadcast revenues alone.

That's Rs 480 cr per franchise per season in revenues from broadcast. Add central & local sponsorship and the gross is pretty handsome.

+
I know I'm going to get calls from industry cursing me for saying this -- but I'll say it anyway... 😆

I'm expecting teams to go between Rs 800 & Rs 1200 crore.

If well sustained by intelligent economics, these properties can develop impressive growth charts in time to come.

+
Remember -- there's no benchmark to put a finger and suggest what should a minimum or maximum bid look like.

The last time this may have happened was in 2007-08, when the original 8 IPL franchises were sold.

There was no saying what the returns in 10 years would look like.

+
How long can you hold an investment without the pressure to break even -- that's the key.

In 2007-08, MI committed US$111.09m over 10 years. RR committed US$67m over 10 years. Both had no way of knowing what to expect.

15 years later, RPSG & CVC definitely knew better.

+
Why?

Because there was a 15 year business model to look back at and take lessons. That gave RPSG the heart to take a billion-dollar bet.

Cut back to women's cricket -- it's the 2007-08 kind of time once again, except one change.

+
As against a fresh bidder who has no experience in cricket franchise business, the existing men's IPL franchise owners can take bigger risks because they're already earning from the game.

It'll help if BCCI sees this space more from a CSR standpoint than bottomline-driven.

+
WIPL franchises will not make any money for quite some time. And honestly, women's cricket has a long way to go before it can start making money.

But that said, is there potential?

Trust me, sky can be the limit if initial years are sustained. That's where the trick lies.

+
Bids will be submitted on Jan 26 & opened the same day.

Tournament will begin tentatively by March 6 or 7 & conclude by around March 22 for men's IPL to start on 26th.

I'm sure all of this will be officially announced once franchises are on board.

Have a lovely Sunday. 🙂

So -- cricket is not headed to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

It's official.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has finally conveyed the same to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

ICC will now have to make a fresh pitch for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

+
The ICC is now putting a new Olympics committee in place and BCCI secretary Jay Shah -- who is also the Indian cricket board's representative at the ICC -- will chair it going forward.

Cricket has some serious questions to answer should it wish to head the Olympics route.

+
But more on that later. First -- an important question.

Was cricket ever going to be part of 2028 Los Angeles Games or was ICC being led down the garden path by certain individuals so far?

ICC must investigate. Did they actually believe IOC would wave the green flag for LA?

Kamlesh Makwana, a First Class veteran from Saurashtra, retired today from all forms of the game. 93 FC matches, 250 wickets, 2357 runs -- quite a career he had spanning 18 years.

Saurashtra Cric Assn did well to felicitate him.

Kamlesh is the son of Rasikbhai Makwana.

+
Rasikbhai had been a curator with BCCI & Saurashtra since the early 80s, until he passed away in July 2020.

He'll be happy watching his son walk away with distinction from wherever he is.

The contribution of Makwanas to Saurashtra cricket is 2nd to none.

+
In my 20-odd years of tracking cricket, what if I tell you -- I haven't met many people half as interesting as Rasikbhai.

A colourful personality, engaging with him on the eve of the game would be the most amazing thing to look forward to in Rajkot.

A "Jamtara" has happened with the International Cricket Council (ICC). 🤦🏾

For those who can't get the reference, "Jamtara" is an exceptionally good series on Netflix that deals with the "phishing" menace.

You must watch it, if you haven't already. : )

Anyways ... 👇🏾

+
The ICC too has become a victim of "phishing".

Some crook created a fake email ID in the name of one ICC's consultants in USA and wrote to the federation's CFO, raising a US$500,000 voucher to be cleared for payment.

Nobody in ICC noticed the different bank Ac No either. 🤦🏾

+
Apparently this was done so neatly that the payment got cleared.

Scary!

And apparently, this is not the first time the ICC has suffered this. 3rd or 4th instance probably or more.

The total loss so far is to the tune of US$2m already.

Someone said FBI is investigating.

Random Sunday thoughts in a #thread

The number of angles to watch Messi's goal on @JioCinema from last night's game is so awesome!

With the kind of digital onset we're witnessing, sky's the limit how technology is changing ways we consume live sport.

+

tinyurl.com/2zzqkvot
App Annie, tool for app analytics, says JioCinema garnered 1/3rd of downloads in entertainment in Nov’2022 (29%). In fact, the tool claims JioCinema was the fastest growing app across categories in Nov.

Fifa obviously turned on the magic here & numbers are telling a story.

+
Now, what excites me is, cricket hasn't even begun yet. There's a whole new world of tech-driven broadcast to look forward to.

If these numbers are close to reality, I'm beginning to shudder what's tech going to do to this space in 5 yrs!

Personalisation will be everything!

BCCI giving this a thought. Nothing confirmed yet.

How about having five women's T20 franchises from five different zones in the country?

North, east, south, west, central. Will it work?

Like -- Chennai or Bangalore, not both (south).

Mumbai or Ahmedabad, not both (west).

+
Delhi or Dharamsala, not both (north).

Kolkata or Northeast (yeah, you heard that right), not both (east).

Lucknow or Jaipur, not both (central).

--

Or does it have too much of a Duleep / Deodhar feel to it? More of a "zonal tournament" outlook / approach?

+
Personally, I think the party that presents the best bid should win.

And by best bid, I don't mean financial. That's secondary.

Best "technical" bid. Give a presentation on what's your plan / 'big picture' for women's cricket?

Doesn't matter which zone you're from.

Action this week...

Women's IPL broadcast rights tender to come out over the next 24 hours.

Tender for Women's IPL franchises will be out next. All ready & waiting to be brought out.

+
Hearing more...

BCCI has decided to do away with the idea of a base price for the women's franchise tender.

Earlier, I'd heard they'd kept it at Rs 400 cr but that won't be the case now.

There's logic behind the decision. Will tweet about it separately.

+
Few things more to share:

Both, broadcast rights and franchises will be sold through a closed tender process.

No e-auctions.

No base prices mean beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
