1/I use archives and interviews to take on assumptions about the strength and ability to control of successive governments in Rwanda before the genocide. I show how the governments of the two post-independence Republics sought and often struggled to cement their rule.
2/The book is also a call to take a closer look at the more ordinary authoritarian strategies, patterns, and forms of decay too often overlooked when studying authoritarian contexts through the lens of critical junctures.
3/The fine grain study of authoritarian trajectories allows us to better understand authoritarianism’s function and evolution over time, including the moments that make or break it.
