Penguins safely home in San Diego, ready to tell their friends about the enormity of what they saw in #Antarctica. Forever changed by everything they experienced, they are so grateful to have had this incredible opportunity to take part in #ase2023 /end
How did we get to this point? The impossible situation we find ourselves in now at @UCSanDiego and other @UofCalifornia campuses has a complex history. Here is a thread of some of it, with some relevant links: 🧵
🕰️ Unionisation efforts at @UofCalifornia began in the 1980s. In 1989, UC Berkeley students petitioned the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) to be recognised as employees. #UC #HigherEd
🚫 UC opposed the petition recognising graduate student researchers (GSRs) as employees, arguing that it would compromise the academic nature of their appointments and impact the free exchange of ideas. #AcademicFreedom #HigherEd
Given inflation, and salaries increasing, and the shear importance of the topic, the total amount must be higher this year...Am I right? 2/5
Nope. There is ONE solicitation for Cryosphere, which includes all ice -- glaciers, ice sheets & sea ice -- $1.5M for 10 proposals. $150K per proposal. With 58% overhead, that only pays for ONE student, no money left for anything else. No travel, no publications, nada. 3/5
Here is a little story about what we are dealing with in the US with funding for working out how quickly Earth's ice is melting, leading to sea level rise (ice sheets and glaciers) and amplifying climate change through the ice-albedo feedback (sea ice)
A sad but true 🧵 1/9
@NASAEarth's ROSES call comes out on Valentine's Day every year. This is a big opportunity for funding for ice research. So let's take a look at what is on offer this year 👀 Exciting! 🥁 2/9
Here we go folks, two calls: one for proposals to improve improve our understanding of ice processes, link the ice changes to the global climate system, and/or advance predictive capabilities.
AKA: Help tell us how much ice loss, and by when. Pretty important right? 3/9
In August @NSF released a report they commissioned on sexual harassment in Antarctica: tinyurl.com/yhcam5xd which revealed that it is widespread, and has been occurring for a long time. 🧵 1/14
Since then, we have heard nothing from NSF about prevention plans for the imminent field season to help people now. The trouble is, doing nothing does harm. ourwatch.org.au 2/14
@NSF Office of Polar Programs released the report on the Results from the U.S. Antarctic Program’s Sexual Assault and Harassment Needs Assessment. And it is shocking. tinyurl.com/2zwbb7e6 Sit tight.
Finding: Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment, and Stalking Are Problems in the USAP Community
Finding: There Is a Lack in Trust in ASC Human Resources
There have been three iceberg calving events from East Antarctica during March. This animation by @CapComCatWalk shows one dramatic style of calving: the collapse of Conger Ice Shelf around 15th March 1/6
