Anomalies in #Antarctic sea ice concentration show the monthly variation from the long-term mean. This map from shows more ➖ than ➕ anomalies for June. See the lack of sea ice in Bellingshausen Sea (arrowed), almost at summer ice levels in mid-winter! Image
This map from @NSIDC and @NASAEarth shows sea ice concentration on 17 June. The orange line is the typical extent for that day based on the average from 1981 to 2010. Some coastal regions are now ice-free where that has not been observed before. Image
The last decade has seen increased variability. Sea-ice area reached a record low in Feb 2023 following the previous record low in Feb 2022, and an extremely low summer avg in 2016/17. Is this shift in Antarctic sea ice a response to climate change? We need to find out @IPCC_CH. graph: Will Hobbs, AAPP

Each spring in the Southern Ocean, sometimes seen from space by @NASA satellites, swirling blooms of solar-powered phytoplankton turn CO2 into food for everything else. While we know the blooms are critical to the biological carbon pump, what triggers them is up for debate. NASA satellite view of Sout...
In #ASLO_Letters, researchers from @IMASUTAS, @ClimateExtremes, @CSIRO & @Ant_Partnership use chlorophyll, phytoplankton carbon & nitrate to understand the best indicator for the timing of blooms - the first study to look at all 3 at once.

🫁 It’s like you can see the oceans breathing. As seasons change, chlorophyll levels from tiny marine plants ripple around the planet. Phytoplankton use chlorophyll to absorb carbon dioxide to make food. This @NASA map gives insights to the oceanic carbon cycle. Read on...🧵
🔃 Crucial for ocean carbon cycling is the 'biological pump', where carbon is taken from the atmosphere by life and put into storage in the deep. It turns out that tiny phytoplankton in the @_SouthernOcean play an outsized role in stopping the planet from overheating. Microscopic phytoplankton (...
🌊 The Southern Ocean is central to slowing the rate of global heating. It accounts for about 40% of the ocean's annual absorption of human-made carbon! So to understand its role in global climate, we really need to understand the influence of biology on this carbon sink (C). Biological pump (graphic: S...

Antarctica is awe, wonder and wildlife abundance at a scale I assumed was confined to the history books; all set within a landscape so spectacular it’s nigh on impossible to take it in.

This may look like a very ordinary seascape, but it isn't. This view is at 72°S in the Bellingshausen Sea, #Antarctica, taken from RV Polarstern expedition #PS134. In a normal year there would be a lot of #seaice in this area, but this year there is none. 1/3
@AWI_Media @BAS_News This month has seen a new record minimum in #Antarctic #seaice extent since satellite records began more than 40 years ago. In the Bellingshausen Sea most of the ice was gone by the end of November. 2/3
@AWI_Media @BAS_News The minimum #seaice extent is highly variable from year to year, and we should be cautious about reading too much into a single year. However, #Antarctic annual and summer sea ice extents have now been below the long-term average for 7 years. A trend seems to be emerging. 3/3

What is the story behind the famous #Bangalore weather?

It goes back 3400 million years...🧵
Around 3,400 million years ago, the peninsular ‘gneiss’ came out and was cooled from volcanic activity.

This is what formed the city’s bedrock today. But the rock itself weathered and stored water in shallow aquifers.
Bengaluru as we know it today, settled at the fag end of the Deccan plateau, 900 metres above sea level.

This gave it the #pleasant climate that Bengaluru is famous for.

Let’s now skip to 88 million years ago. >>

Australian Prime Minister @ScottMorrisonMP made the judgment that #China does not “share the same objectives as Australia does” in #Antarctica .
If he meant the objective of creating harmful political tension among parties or countries conducting scientific exploration on the continent, then he is right---#China does not intend to do that.
In 1984 when China sent its first fleet of science experts to the #Antarctica , Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping set out China’s mission as “to contribute to humanity’s peaceful use of Antarctica”, the principles of which #China has adhered to over the years.

#Greenland The Danish Meteorological Institute says huge warming there is linked to #ClimateChange .
How much "warming?"

- Further north in Qaanaaq temp topped 46 F -- normal is -4.2 F.
70% of Earth's freshwater is frozen, and #Greenland is the 2nd largest block of ice after #Antarctica. If it were to fully melt...
