A year ago, Israeli police killed an elderly Palestinian activist by running him over with a tow truck.
This is Hajj Suleiman’s story. 1/
Hajj Suleiman was a fierce Palestinian elder and advocate for his community in Masafer Yatta.
Israel has been working to wipe the 1,000 Palestinians who live there off the map so it can steal their land.
He was killed trying to stop that from happening.
Hajj Suleiman was known to protect his neighbors’ homes by standing in front of Israeli bulldozers while waving the Palestinian flag.
Militarized Israeli police ran over him with a tow truck, dragged him 30 feet, and left without calling for medical aid.
Hundreds of people attended Hajj Suleiman’s funeral, a testament to how much he meant to his community in Masafer Yatta.
Instead of resting in his old age, he dedicated himself to freedom until his last breath.
Since killing Hajj Suleiman, Israel hasn’t stopped destroying Palestinian homes in his community.
In fact, Israel’s ramped up plans to force over 1,000 Palestinians in Masafer Yatta out of their homes in order to steal their land.
Right now, countless Palestinian families in Masafer Yatta are living in fear that heavily-armed Israeli soldiers will invade their homes and force them to flee for their lives at any moment.
Families in Masafer Yatta no longer have Hajj Suleiman to stand between their homes and Israel’s bulldozers.
Still, his legacy lives on as Palestinians continue to show up for one another and defend their homes in the face of Israel’s horrific violence.
In 1948, Israeli soldiers destroyed 530 Palestinian towns, massacred Palestinians and drove 75% of the native population out of their homes, into exile.
This is known as the Nakba.
Imagine being a Palestinian right now, hearing officials chant for the Nakba’s return. (1/6)
These Israeli chants for the return of the Nakba, of mass theft, terror, and violence against Palestinians, are not new.
This isn't even the first time we've heard it from an elected politician.
“We want Nakba now” - spoken by Israeli leaders with the power to make it happen.
Yoni Yossef, the Israeli councilman who called for this mass violence, has the authority to deprive Palestinians in Jerusalem of their right to build homes on their land.
He is already tearing apart Palestinian communities.
Right now, Israel is detaining over 4,700 Palestinian political prisoners.
Here’s what apartheid Israel’s prison system is like for them:
Israel has jailed Palestinians for their political expression since it was founded.
Israel has imprisoned Palestinians for writing poetry, sharing social media posts, creating art, publishing articles, and teaching Palestinian history.
An Israeli law allows the government to jail Palestinians indefinitely, without serving them any charges.
Israel currently jails 835 Palestinians under this law. Many of them will spend years in Israel’s prisons without knowing why they were arrested.
Israel targets, attacks, and tries to erase Palestinian Identity.
Here's how.
Israel has:
- banned the Palestinian flag.
- replaced Palestinian street names with Israeli ones.
- erased Palestinian history from textbooks.
- removed Arabic from its official languages.
- appropriated Palestinian food.
Why does Israel go after Palestinian culture and identity?
To weaken the strong connection that Palestinians have to one another, and to their land.
THREAD: Palestinian health workers in Gaza drove a fleet of ambulances along the border with Israel yesterday, protesting Israel's deadly blockade.
For over a year, Palestinians have been waiting for Israel to allow them a new x-ray machine, which would save lives.
Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza have needlessly died, or been permanently disabled, all because Israel actively prevents Palestinian doctors from accessing the essential medical equipment they need to do their jobs.
From X-rays to cancer treatments, Israel is depriving Palestinians in Gaza of the medical services that they desperately need to live and be healthy.
Why?
Because Israel’s inhumane blockade enforces segregation and apartheid, killing Palestinians in the process.
THREAD: Former head of Human Rights Watch, Ken Roth, was blocked from a fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy school of government.
Why?
Because of his principled stand against Israeli apartheid.
As former executive director of @hrw, @KenRoth oversaw the publication of a report on Israel’s “Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution” against Palestinians.
Ken says the report and his tweets in support of Palestinian freedom are the reason he was denied the Harvard fellowship.
Roth received a letter from a Harvard professor that said the Dean had blocked the fellowship due to his criticism of Israel.
In the letter, she wrote that this reasoning flew "in the face of all [her] knowledge about human rights information, data and bias."
