Prof. Finnis recalled that the “wrongness of contracepting conjugal intercourse” is a truth that even the progressive German Jesuit theologian Karl Rahner “stated straightforwardly” before the Second Vatican Council.

Finnis said the Church’s doctrine on contraception fulfills the 4 conditions required for a teaching to be infallible even if it’s not been formally defined. But a “new paradigm” of dissent led to a loss of unity in judgment among bishops on the infallible nature of the teaching—

— a fact that he said “is a problem for them and for the sees they govern” but “not for the truth of a teaching” which their predecessors had been united in teaching as infallible.

From a Latin American friend/Church expert: “This is very important news. In fact, Clodovis split from Leonardo about 10 years ago, accusing liberation theology (of which he was an exponent) of having displaced Our Lord Jesus Christ from the centre of the Catholic religion” 1/3

“Now he goes even further: he repeats the same assertion but adds that liberation theology is at the root of the decline of the Church in Brazil. Articles have been written in Brazil about this but I didn’t know Clodovis is now saying the same.” 2/3

Pope Francis in new interview calls for “normal seminarians, with their problems, who play soccer, and who don’t go to the neighbourhoods to dogmatise.” He warns against people “trapped in a theology manual, unable to get into trouble and make theology move forward.” 1/5

He says any pastoral approach driven by ideology is “sick from the beginning,” and that “right wing ideologies are perhaps the most dangerous” for the young. “I fear intellectual youth groups, those who summon young people to reflect and then they fill them with weird ideas.” 2/5

He condemns members of restorationist movements as ideologues having “a lot of corruption” and says rigidity is like a shell that “hides a lot of rot.” In many dioceses, Francis adds, traditionalism has acted as a façade for “serious moral problems and vices, double lives.” 3/5
