Some of you never heard of #NeveYaakov settlement before last night's fatal attack. Having grown up just across from it, I thought to provide a couple bits of info.
I think its important considering this settlement's location & the fact its home to the "IDF" Central Command HQ.
In 1924, an American Zionist group purchased 62 dunams of land from Beit Hanina landowners. They settled it 1925-48. The population did not exceed a few hundred who lived peacefully before abandoning it as the eve of Al-Nakba when news came that Jordanian army mobilized to enter.
The settlement we know today was established in 1972, but on private & titled Palestinian lands illegally confiscated by Israeli authorities in August 1970 following occupation of E. Jerusalem. Prior, there was a Jordanian military base where land had been bought by Jews in 20s.
The settlement of Neve Yaakov was built on lands stolen from Palestinians of two major towns and one village. It was built on: 551 dunams from Beit Hanina, 315 dunums from Al-Ram & Dahiyeh, 385 dunams from Hizma respectively.
Beit Hanina where I grew up suffered greatly from Israel's systematic encirclement with bypass roads & Jewishcsettlements meant to choke it, take its lands & divide into fragments (half of Beit Hanina is under Jerusalem Municipality, other half is "Area C" of WB, behind the wall.
The settlement of Neve Yaakov served an important part in the belt of Jewish-only settlements in the heart of East Jerusalem, meant to limit and fragment Palestinian communities further. It is an exclusively Jewish settlement & only expands to host incoming Zionist immigrants.
Additionally, and equally important, the settlement of Neve Yaakov is home to Fort Nehemiah, the Central Command of the "IDF" Headquarters.
Being home to Central Command meant that the settlement hosted the military body responsible for all military units, operations and activities of Israeli Occupation Forces in the occupied West Bank.
also, the HQ's commander is the one authorized to declare new settlements in WB.
- The settlement is strategic in heart of Palestinian East Jerusalem, it serves its purpose to stop natural expansion of Beit Hanina & Dahiyet Al-Barid.
- The Israeli Military runs the Occupation from there. Here are pics of Israeli Def Min Yoav Galant in Neve Yaakov on 3.1.2023

🧵Thread on two incidents of Israeli State-Sanctioned mob violence that took place over the past weekend, in Sheikh Jarrah (Jerusalem) & Huwara (Nablus).
Evidence of collusion by Israeli authorities (Military & Police) in enabling & facilitating the anti-Palestinian mob violence.
The organized mob violence this weekend happened following incessant incitement by Israeli politicians who are in the middle of vicious electioneering before the #Israelex22.
Evidence from Israel's Interior Minister Shaked, MK Ben Gvir, & Jerusalem's Deputy Mayor King.
First, Jerusalem:
Jewish-supremacy mobs roam streets of Jlm on Thursday nights. flag waving Israelis chant anti-Palestinian chants, and "look for an Arab" to harass or beat. Their goal "that Arabs will be afraid to walk around here" 13tv.co.il/item/news/poli…
This morning, we went down to harvest the olives in our land in Wadi Al-Rababa. It was a wonderful morning, solidarity from our neighbors in Silwan and other friends in the city was apparent, we weren't alone.
However, the settlers nearby had their eyes fixed on us all morning.
The settlers, also known as "Nature Authority" called the police, of course... they claimed we were in a "closed zone", and that we shouldn't pick the trees in our own land lol.
3.5 hours after we began picking, a large Israeli force entered the land, as if acting on the orders of the settler leaders from the "nature authority". The settler was first to harass us, demanding we show IDs, and the police continued acting on behalf of the settlers. twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
On Yom Kippur, the military of the Israeli occupation regime had raided the town of Deir Al-Hattab, adjacent to Nablus's east. They've besieged a home, and have reportedly shot dead one Palestinian and seriously injured several others.
Pal MoH: Alaa Zaghal, 21 year old, shot in the head & killed in Deir Al-Hattab, E. Nablus, this afternoon.
The Palestine TV crew came under Israeli fire, and are besieged as they cover the raid in Deir Al-Hattab, 2 of the crew were intentionally targeted, shot in torso by Israeli bullets. Main Correspondent isn't able to move or retrieve equipment as crew continue to come under fire.
Incase you thought Sunday's pogroms were an isolated event 🧵👇
Today, Silwan:
2 members of Sumrein family walking to their home in Wadi Al-Rababa, edge of Silwan, were intercepted by 2 workers from 🇮🇱Environment Authority (a front for the settler movement in E. Jerusalem).
The workers, armed, refused to let the 2 Sumrein boys access the path to their own home. Within minutes, twenty of those settlers, armed with guns & pepper, attacked the boys, smashed their car, and stoned their home. One from Sumrein fam is hospitalized with serious eye injury.
One of the attacked Palestinians called on the Israeli Occupation Police, who are usually in the area.
The Israeli authorities arrived and arrested four boys from Sumrein family and one from Abu Sneineh.
A pogrom took place in Sheikh Jarrah this evening, it lasted for hours. When Israeli forces intervened, they secured the perimeter to the aid of raiding settlers.
they used bullets, gas & water cannon against🇵🇸, while a State-Sponsored Pogrom took place uninterrupted inside SJ.
Same in the Old City of Jerusalem, where another pogrom took place, conducted in coordination between 🇮🇱 police & flag-waving 🇮🇱marchers.
All the videos I see from the Old City are settlers insulting & assaulting Palestinians INSIDE THEIR HOMES.
Police was aiding & abetting.
Last but not least, all journalists inside old city were harassed, some attacked & had objects thrown at them. I've seen plenty of evidence &got told by journo friends who had a press pass.
The videos again show 🇮🇱police aid & abet by allowing the violence to go uninterrupted.
Haya Yasmeen is an @mbc1 producer & presenter on Sabah El-Kheir ya Arab. She was in Hebron to film the glass workshops.
After the segment, she got assaulted and detained while on a walk with her mother.
Israel's Apartheid Enforcers never miss a chance to assault a journalist 🤡
video from Haya's perspective. They took her to a room and strip searched her at gun point. I can hardly think of a Palestinian living under occupation who hasn't been strip-searched at gun point. definitely more than once in their lives.
Same checkpoint.
Here, you can see a Palestinian boy squirming on the ground in pain, inside one of the Israeli search/interrogation rooms.
This is regular behaviour in Hebron old city, the core of Israel's Apartheid regime.
