🧵1/ Musk is making Twitter much less transparent, much less accountable, & thus more vulnerable to manipulation. Many of the often poorly resourced activists & academics using the API to tackle foreign influence ops will no longer be able to. Governments should worry #TwitterAPI
2/ Musk is completely stripping Twitter of the resources required to tackle manipulation. The huge loss of human capital, the commodified verification system, the edgelordism, the drive for users to appease advertisers - all are creating a febrile atmosphere for info manipulation
3/ Twitter's immune system was never great, but it is being thoroughly compromised by Musk. The tacit public-private partnership that allowed researchers API access was a small contribution to innoculation against information warfare. #twitterapi
4/ This is made much more worrying by Musk's indulgence of Russia, his tendency to fall for or spread conspiracy theories, and his misguided libertarianism that leaves minorities and marginalised groups vulnerable to hate speech and harassment

Welcome to botception: Here you can see over 4k accounts liking a tweet by an account called @usviolations - in this case a tweet about Assange. Despite this, if you click on "likes" or "retweets" you won't see anything. It's possible that this is because most of the accounts
are brand new and/or of low quality so they don't appear due to algorithmic ranking - or perhaps it's indexing. The fake accounts can be seen individually (I found them as some people have reported being mass followed by sketchy accounts so i accessed them via viewing followers)
I don't think "quality" makes much difference. If you look at this other tweet from @usviolations you will see most of the retweets seem to be from fake accounts with strange handles, barely any followers, and erm, Korean bios.

🧵1/ I think one of the biggest debates we will have going forward regarding deception/information manipulation is how researchers should approach it when it is perceived to be pro-Western FP or pro *causes we agree with*. Obviously as the war in Ukraine
2/ continues, tensions in Taiwan increase, and protest movements in the Middle East and elsewhere demand change, this question will become increasingly pertinent. I've heard conversations where people advocate flooding the information space with pro-Ukraine messaging in an ends
3/ justify the means manner (what this entailed exactly was unclear). However there are a myriad of reasons why such ostensibly benevolent campaigns can be dangerous. 1) a commitment to truth and transparency in and of itself is valuable. 2) influence operations are inherently

1/ I downloaded the 24k likes to this tweet on the basis that many of them are likely bots. Sure enough most of them are bots, but they are not all as easy to detect. Below are some means of determining the bottiness. Aka, skinning a bot. Image
2/ Regarding the obvious bots. You can clearly see an anomalous spike in Dec 2022 (graph on right), where over 3000 bots were created in a 2 day period (21 and 22 December). At times, over 400 new accounts were created per hour -that's 6-7 bots created per minute (graph on left) ImageImage
3/ Date of creation isn't a great metric for determining whether the remaining accounts (left) are bots. But you can run some further analysis and find that, for example, 72% of accounts have between - 0-10 followers, with 94% of accounts having fewer than <50 followers (right) ImageImage

Despite what @elonmusk says, bots are definitely alive and kicking on the platform. My colleague @MonicaLMarks just got followed by approximately 1000 glamour bots with Turkish and Indian sounding names. The graph below shows how 1000+ accounts were created in two days
2/ At times, over one account was created per minute. Many are brand new and have not tweeted, but some are starting to awake from their slumber, mostly to like and retweet content.
3/ A few of the accounts that have become active are liking this post, about a festival in Riyadh, which has over 24k likes. If you click on the likes you can already tell (see photo on right) many of them are probably bots (will download to see)

Really important (and difficult) piece by @WillTodman on the complexity of solidarity and advocacy in the Middle East. Also draws attention to how governments in the region are "instrumentaliIng homophobia for political gain". Some quotes...
"While well-intentioned and welcomed by some in the region, these protests have played into politicians’ efforts to make LGBTQ+ rights a wedge issue."
"The foreign protestors can go home, if they ever traveled to the region in the first place. Their futures are not shaped by a rising tide of intolerance or by accusations of disloyalty. Arab LGBTQ+ individuals are home, but they are finding their homes increasingly inhospitable"

1/7 It is mindful when resisting state violence to understand state tactics. Here is a useful (I hope) summary of four categories of state repression that shows how actions taken by states can lead to demobilization of social movements. It can be broken down as follows... Image
2/7 'Personal integrity violations'. The most common manifestation of repression is various forms of controlling bodies through violence or other means, as highlighted below. Image
3/7 'Statecraft' usually involves non-violent means that serve to change the calculus of costs by those taking part in a social movement. Image
