🧵 This is Benjamin Foster.
Tuesday, he died by suicide in a stand off with Oregon police. Foster met a woman on Bumble, went on a “date”, held her captive, beat, tortured & assaulted her for 5 days over Christmas. Her? Hospitalized, still unconscious, in critical condition 1/ Image
Police said when they found her it was “an absolutely disgusting scene.” Foster allegedly killed two people before the stand off and before committing suicide. He was on dating sites, trying to find new victims. And, Foster had done this before 2/
.@NPR reported Foster, in 2019, held his then-girlfriend captive in her Las Vegas apartment for 2 weeks. She had 7 broken ribs, 2 black eyes and injuries from being bound at the wrists and ankles with zip ties and duct tape. She said Foster forced her to eat lye, choked her 3/
unconscious, shaved her head & required her hands "stay in constant contact" with his body when not tied up. Then, Foster “reached a deal with Clark County prosecutors…plead guilty to 1 felony count of battery & a misdemeanor count of battery constituting domestic violence.” 4/
In that case, he was sentenced to 30 months, with 729 days credited for “time served.” So, about a year. For kidnapping, torture, beating, and assault of a woman. 5/
But, she was ‘just’ a woman, right? #TyreNichols was ‘just’ a young black man, right? Police beat him to death for a traffic stop. Just a woman beaten unconscious because she went on a date. The difference? A white man in Oregon vs a Black man in Tennessee. 6/
The commonality? Certain people in our society are deemed ‘just’. Just this or that. Not worth JUSTICE AND FAIRNESS in the eyes of police and judges. This conversation isn’t just about police reform. It’s about Legal CONSISTENCY. 7/
It’s about what the Black community has been telling us all along. EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW. If you’re going to beat a young Black man to death in Tennessee, you need to get exactly what Memphis is giving. Murder and kidnapping charges. You’re done. Over. Gone. 8/
And if you’re going to torture a woman & beat her into months-long unconsciousness, you’re done. Over. This coward did that FOR the Oregon legal system. But cops didn’t beat him. They didn’t shoot him. And he NEVER should have been freed after one year when he did it BEFORE! 9/
Tyre Nichols did NOTHING! And was murdered. But I’d bet my paycheck that a judge in Oregon who gave Foster that pathetic sentence was thinking “she just a woman and probably deserved it”. And those cops in Memphis said pretty much the same about Tyre. 10/
So, when we talk reform, IMO, we need to talk about some crimes being classified Federal. If you irreparably harm or kill another human being, you need to be prosecuted under federal law. You are not fit for society. No local judicial discretion. No bias. No racism. NO deals! 11/
Mandated charges, mandated sentencing. Everywhere. Every time. Only then will police and judges stop seeing any of us as being ‘just’ anything. -/

🧵 Thank you Mr. President! My daughter earned two undergraduate degrees at a state university, graduating Magna Cum Laude with both. She made the absolute most out of her undergrad experience, leading student orgs against campus assault and domestic violence among students 1/
I put her through undergrad and she helped by serving as an RA to lessen my burden for room and board costs. When it came time to get her master’s in Social Work (required by most states) she was accepted into 9 public and private university programs. 2/
She accepted the offer from a private university, which has the Number One program in the country, which also gave her $35,000 in scholarship money. Today, she is a licensed, clinical social worker for the transplant team at a major metropolitan hospital. 3/

🧵 A month ago, my son and daughter-in-law had my first grandchild. Little dude was wreaking havoc on his mother. She had gestational diabetes and then pre-eclampsia which landed her in the hospital a week before his birth. Both are now doing great! 1/
But, when he had to be delivered via emergency c-section, she was 33 weeks pregnant. Thankfully, he was viable and healthy at 3 lbs, 15 ozs. That c-section was performed to save her and him. When doctors did the surgery, they found the placenta was ripping. 2/
She would have bled to death in moments. She was in the 3rd trimester so my grandchild could survive, although in the NICU for a while. Had it happened earlier in the pregnancy, the baby may not have been able to survive but it would have been in order to save his mother. 3/

🧵 Was at the grocery store today. Ahead of me in line was an elderly man who was having the checker add one item at a time to a small grocery haul as he counted cash in his hand. When it came to the last 3 items - a cucumber, couple tomatoes, & a few potatoes, he was short. 1/
I grabbed the extra $7 out of my wallet and gave it to the checker. “Why would you do that?” He asked me. “Just to help. You need the food.” I said. “I would have done without.” He replied. “I hope someday someone helps you if you need it,” he added. 2/
He thanked me so sweetly and wished me a Happy Thanksgiving and I wished him the same.
What I did not say to him was watching him count his money for a tiny grocery purchase was breaking my heart. And I’m not telling this story for a pat on the back. 3/

THREAD: We know how critical the @USPS is, especially for this election and we know Trump is trying to steal it. Again. But the right-now, can’t-wait issue is medication. A man said yesterday his cancer meds are 12 days overdue! Life-sustaining Insulin delivery is delayed 1/
which, btw, is rendered useless in heat. Cold pack packaging can only stay cold so long. Roughly 34% of Americans get at least some of their prescriptions by mail. 12% are required to use mail-order by their insurance plans. (source: PubMed.gov - unvetted) 2/
Asthma medication, Epi pens, blood pressure meds, blood thinning (cardiac) meds, anti-depressants - much needed medications are now stalled or severely delayed due to Trump’s attack on the post office 3/

For those considering voting for Trump, ask yourself these questions:
1. Do you invest in the stock market?
2. Can you save anything toward your kids’ college?
3. Does your boss come to work in a $150,000 car, while you’d have to sacrifice groceries to fix yours? 1/
4. Is your community getting needed infrastructure repairs?
5. Has the homeless population in your community decreased?
6. Is your community more tense than ever before?
7. Do you live paycheck-to-paycheck?
8. Are you terrified of losing your job? 2/
9. Are more people employed in your area as a result of tax reform?
10. Can you take the day off to go fishing like your boss does to play golf?
11. Are you worried your brilliant daughter won’t be able to get a decent job?
12. Are you a single parent working three jobs? 3/
