NEW: Denver mayoral candidate @AndyforDenver, a leading fundraiser in the race, racked up seven false claims during a recent interview with @GeorgeBrauchler on @710KNUS. We fact-checked each falsehood. #copolitics 9news.com/article/news/l…
@AndyforDenver @GeorgeBrauchler @710KNUS Rougeot's litany of false claims ranged from obvious falsehoods about other candidates in the race to instances where he appeared genuinely confused about city issues and policies.
@AndyforDenver claimed he’s the “only candidate with actual business experience.” Not true. @KwameSpearman is the CEO of @TatteredCover. @KellyBroughDen ran the @DenChamber. Thomas Wolf is an investment banker. Aurelio Martinez ran a restaurant. Robert Treta is a developer.
Rougeot falsely said “all the other candidates... are all sort of career politicians.” The field of 17 candidates for Denver Mayor includes approximately 10 candidates who could fairly be described as new or relatively new to politics.
Rougeot falsely claimed that he is the only candidate talking about enforcing the camping ban. Several candidates are vocal about their support for the camping ban. Here are several raising their hands in support of sweeps at a recent forum.
Rougeot falsely claimed that Denverites who have "already finished" homes are waiting a year for a Certificate of Occupancy to move into the property. Denver has a serious backlog in building permits but once builds/remodels are completed, COs are typically issued in 1-2 days.
Rougeot falsely blamed Denver's pedestrian deaths on jaywalking by people experiencing homelessness. "We're having a spike of pedestrian deaths mostly caused by homeless individuals cutting across busy streets," he said. It appears Rougeot is incorrectly reading city statistics.
Denver Medical Examiner's stats show that most pedestrians killed in 2022/2021/2020 weren't homeless. Rougeot’s campaign pointed 9NEWS to “blunt force trauma” deaths, which the ME's office says includes other causes of death, including suicides, falls, and people hit by trains.
Rougeot inexplicably claimed that he is the only mayoral candidate who isn’t receiving matching taxpayer funding through the city’s new Fair Elections Fund. There are four mayoral candidates who are not receiving Fair Elections Fund matches.
Rougeot claimed, without evidence, that mayoral candidates he wouldn't name are paying themselves salaries out of campaign funds. A Denver Elections spokeswoman said such an action would violate campaign finance laws.
9NEWS reviewed the expenditure reports of all 17 mayoral candidates and found no evidence to support Rougeot’s claim that a candidate is taking a salary from campaign funds. Rougeot's campaign then told 9NEWS that the funds are hidden by payroll firms.
9NEWS contacted the two mayoral campaigns that list expenditures to payroll companies. Both volunteered to allow 9NEWS to review their payroll forms. The forms provided offered no evidence to support Rougeot’s claim of illegal salaries being paid to mayoral candidates.

NEW: @GovofCO Polis will begin his State of the State address with a list of challenges faced by Colorado in his first term, with the notable inclusion of rising hate speech. Will thread details from prepared remarks here. #copolitics
"We’ve gone through a lot these last four years, Colorado," Gov Polis' prepared remarks read. "COVID-19. Shootings. Devastating wildfires. Record inflation. Spiraling hate speech."
Polis' remarks shout out Gandolf from Lord of The Rings, Nikola Jokic, and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone (because of course). "Jokic, Gandalf, Trey and Matt, and Colorado believe the next chapter is the best one - and I do too. Our best days are yet to come."

NEW: Fmr congressional candidate @AadlandforCO, who said the 2020 election was “absolutely rigged,” has announced his candidacy for Chair of the @cologop. Aadland pledged to “restore integrity to our election system.” #copolitics
Aadland’s platform includes ending the mail-in ballot system used by the vast majority of Coloradans, closing Republican primaries to unaffiliated voters, and “getting rid of the current voting machines.”
Aadland was unsuccessful in attracting national GOP support in his run for the open 7th Congressional District seat in Colorado, which Republicans initially thought could be competitive in a friendly year. Aadland lost to @pettersen4co by 15%.

This is the time of year for new starts and second chances. The non-profit CommunityWorks helps Coloradans overcome barriers to employment through job training, apprenticeships, and placement with employers. I'll match the next fifty $5 donations: coloradogives.org/story/2b8cig
CommunityWorks leaders told me they have a particular need to buy work clothes for Coloradans coming out of the justice system. The non-profit has relationships with employers who believe in second chances and are ready to hire. Image
CommunityWorks offers specialized job training and certificate programs, along with mentorship and career counseling that doesn't end when a participant lands a job. They aim to keep setbacks in life from becoming generational stumbling blocks to self-sufficiency. Image

The Libertarian candidate being blamed for Republicans' loss in CO-8 didn't have a formal campaign yet he vastly outperformed Colorado's other Libertarian candidates. Also, he rocks. He's the soundman for a metal band. #copolitics
CO-8 Libertarian candidate Dan Ward says he campaigned solely through shows for his band, Driven By Turmoil. The band's song "Shut The F--- Up" became his campaign anthem as they asked listeners to vote against the establishment candidates.
Pollsters and political operatives with both parties weren't sure how Ward won 3.9% of the vote. Five other Libertarian candidates for Congress in Colorado averaged 1.9%. Each had more of a traditional campaign presence than Ward, who says he did not raise or spend any money.

NEW: Sen. @MichaelBennet (D) says he was surprised by his 12-pt margin of victory over @ODeaForColorado (R). Bennet told me he expected an 8-pt win. He pointed to Democrats closing the gap in populous red counties like Douglas and El Paso. #cosen #copolitics
If Bennet serves his entire third full term, he will become the longest serving US Senator from Colorado in a century. But Bennet said he has no desire to grow old in the Senate, as some of his colleagues have done.
Bennet said both he and Gov @jaredpolis (D) could be in the presidential conversation if Biden chooses not to run in 2024. "I think both of us could be in that conversation," Bennet said. "Because Colorado is such an interesting state politically for the country."
