Sorry to be biblicist & therefore a curmudgeon, but only time will tell if this Asbury "revival" is actually worthy of the name or if it is just futile navel gazing. If/when they start pleading the cause of the afflicted & needy w one voice, then I'll believe they "know" God.+
Getting caught up in a rapture of music & prayer can v well happen when communing w a demon. If this is truly reviving the community's communion w the Xian God, then an explosion of "social justice" is about to happen (!!). Jeremiah 9:24; 22:15–16; Matt 25:31–46. May it be so.
Since more r finding this, I’ll add Acts 2:41–47 & 4:31–35 for the #asburyrevival. The 1st 2 episodes of the Spirit filling the church lead immediately to meeting the material needs of others. This is instructive. What God has joined together let no “revival” separate.
All the couple of “for Asbury skeptics, here’s my story” 🧵s all I read was “I was skeptical but when I got there *I* felt good.” When we get stories that look like Acts 2 & 5 where suddenly people’s pantries r getting filled & debts paid/forgiven, then we can call it revival.
Let’s also add Acts 6:1–7. When communities experience revival then they r given incisive vision for self-critique. When Asbury reorganizes any unjust policies & practices to be more congruent w the justice of the gospel, then we can call it revival. #asburyrevival
Let’s add Acts 17:1–7 & 19:11–41. When the rulers wonder if this rabble will destabilize their polity centered on the idols of 🇺🇸 & Mammon 💵 bc they proclaim “another king” & r turning the society “upside down” by destroying these national idols, then we can call it revival.
P.S. I’m perfectly happy for all the Asbury to be enjoying themselves having a grand ol time. That’s great. It’s the intentional framing of this as “revival” gives me great pause. I hope the good times roll & the community & thus the world is better for it.
“Revival” is value judgment. All I’m saying is (a) we cannot evaluate right now—so maybe pause the “revival” language—& (b) we have v clear criteria to evaluate the fruits of this publicly broadcasted gathering going forward & it’s a matter of gospel integrity to apply them.
Since this is still making the rounds, some further comments:
Y'all, as I said "what God has joined together [worship/filled w the Spirit & social justice] let no revival separate."
💥Even John the Baptizer was suspicious of the popularity of his "revival" & pleaded for the "crowds" coming to "bear fruits worthy of repentance."~Lk 3:7–14
JBap's ministry teaches us that esp when something becomes a popular "movement" we need to make explicit that w/e we do the telos must be abt conforming ourselves/our communities to the justice of God, which is always abt exalting the material conditions of the poor & oppressed.
I pray & trust there r JBaps at Asbury holding each other accountable to the fruits God seeks from the people: personal & societal righteousness & justice (Isa 5:7). If u think any1 w this message is poo pooing the gathering *itself* then it's a little 2 "only a hit dog hollars."
I should be grading my two final classes, but I got lost down a Mishnah rabbit hole, stayed up to 3am. Woke up still tracing that research high & just now think I've come full circle to stop, peacefully knowing the small paragraph this generated for my book is well substantiated.
The hopeful payoff: Roy Gane's interpretation of Lev 12:7–8, which is meant to counter Milgrom & which he (Gane) then extrapolates out to the entire purgation sacrifices is untenable.
Gane doesn't reckon w the multi-step purification process & what the status of the parurient is after the 40th day for a son or 80th day for a daughter. She is "pure" (can't convey impurity to anything), just cannot eat of sacrificial foods until she makes the hatta’t.
The closest thing to a blueprint for what a "Christian nation" might be abt is Matt 25:31–46. However, this isn't abt "Christian nations" bc the sheep/goats are *both* surprised to learn they have been interacting w Jesus this whole time. But there's still lots to learn here.
(esp. those of you who like "limited government," listen up.)
The Sheep & the Goats r *not* individuals. They r particular *nations.* It's a judgment of the nations that is in view. This is bc "sheep" & the "goats" r subsets of "the nations" (*ta ethnē*, 25:32).
So the scene is one where all the "nations" r gathered before Jesus & he separates "one from the other" (25:32)—i.e., one nation from another—distinguishing them as sheep and goats (25:33) on the basis of v clear criteria.
Why inspiration of Scripture ≠ inerrancy (or shouldn’t): A 🧵
Just like the *Spirit inspired* prophetic words spoken in the church are not inerrant/infallible—since Paul says these inspired utterances need to be διακρίνω-ed (“judged/evaluated/questioned/doubted”) by the community (1 Cor 14:29)—I think same goes for written inspired words.
We always need to pass judgment on even inspired prophetic words (oral or textual). Inspiration means “We believe God wants us all to wrestle w *these* particular texts. Don’t ignore them. Disagree, or decide for this bit but doubt that other bit. All good. Just don’t ignore it.”
COVID finally got me. The rest of the fam is testing negative right now. Wife & I have 4 shots (tho not the bivalent one…ugh) & kids have 3. I feeling “off” this week but tested negative until this morning. Throat feels “dry” rather than “sore.” V mild body aches. No fever.
I’ve been loading up on vitamin D, zinc, and vitamin C throughout the day since Mon (since it’s water soluble and the excess gets eliminated through urine—so I’ve been told). Hoping that’s helped along w the shots to have a mild case thus far.
Assuming I’ve had it since Mon but just wasn’t enough viral load to show up on the tests. So not sure if my family is just a day or so behind me or if I wasn’t shedding enough virus to infect them. But this is why I mask indoors! Hope I didn’t infect any students or colleagues.
I agree w this & hope I do so in practice. This is why I try to differentiate btw "description" & "interpretation(s)." E.g., "The correct interpretation of Gen 1 is X" should be avoided, but we can also say, e.g., "Gen 1 is about the 10 days of creation" is 100% *incorrect.* 1/3
This gets delicate & nuanced bc a lot of times *interpretations* are predicated on completely incorrect *descriptions* of the pericope(s). This matters for those religious trads that think the validity of any interp/theology needs to have a rational anchor in the text itself. 2/3
There's a difference btw various interps that don't reduplicate the text but say something new/more or even “different” when they grow up/out of the text & those that have to be based on something else entirely bc there’s no discernible tether back to the words on the page. 3/3
