What I experienced during a visit to the #asburyrevival, a 🧵
I’ve seen a lot of skepticism online about what is happening at Asbury University right now. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical myself. On my drive down, I was reflecting on how many times I’ve heard people.. (1/x)
called hyped-up worship nights “revival.” My wife and I were chewed up and spit out by the “revivalist,” NAR crowd and culture, and I was dreading pulling up to Asbury because I was scared it would be a waste of time. I’m so glad I was wrong. (2/x)
First, this is not 90’s Toronto or Brownsville. This is not shofars, gold dust, and angel feathers. There were no fire tunnels, gandalf staffs, or “drunkenness in the spirit.” The presence of God is so gentle, comforting, warm, and yet invigorating and empowering (3/x)
I joked that I wanted to lay down and take a nap, run a lap, weep, and laugh, all at the same time. We (my wife and I) worshipped for 6 hours straight and it felt like only 15 minutes had gone by, like time slowing down or standing still in this move of God. No hype here (4/x)
So don’t go to this is if you’re expecting a self-proclaimed apostle or prophet to call you out and have you rolling in the floor for a few hours. This is not that.
This is Luke 10:41-42.
(5/x)
Second, this is not a Wesleyan or Methodist ONLY revival - out of the 10 people I met today, 2 were Baptist pastors, 1 was Anglican priest, and 3 were Presbyterian elders. They were all praying and worshipping together. They were united in their pursuit of God’s presence. (6/x)
ALSO, this thing is largely student-led. The worship, public reading of scripture, testimony time, prayer ministry, etc. were all student led. This isn’t through a church, denomination, network, etc. it’s a bunch of college students who want an encounter with Jesus. (7/x)
Third and finally, I want to go back as soon as possible. The presence of God, the sound of weeping as people encounter Jesus, watching people come to faith, worshipping for hours and not feeling drained. Better is one day.. (8/8).
