All of this hashtag drama would be settled if a lot more people just learnt how to use Twitters advance searches. So, as I did that boring work for you. Besides the dross of people's horror book titles and saying women's name in the bedroom. (2010).... 🧵
In a feminist context relating to violence the earliest use I could find was in a relation tnamed Rehtaeh Parsons (a rape victim) in 2014 before the launch of the campaign what most people are claiming "invented" this tag/chant +
As I've said MULTIPLE times for years on this platform. Twitter is not an accurate documentation of anything! The term "say her name" has been used before in the context of violence against women. Seemingly Crenshaw and others knew this and they used it WITHIN that tradition!
That is my ted talk for the evening on how to cut through crap on the internet. Have a look for yourself if you must. Even Beyoncé makes an appearance! Solidarity is HARD WORK. Sometimes we find ourselves on the same side as people we don't really want to be. But it is what it is
Crenshaw started an important campaign but it's just that - ONE campaign and ONE use of the term/tag amongst what has been many years of usage. It's ok for us to recognise the urgent need for that campaign but not ok to start making wild claims about ownership and who can use it.
Last if you know NOTHING about feminist activism in the UK and it's histories or never even been on a feminist march/protest here. Please refrain from trying to "educate".
So please, no more claims in big capital letters like if we just say it loud enough it will become gospel truth - it won't. Trans-led groups have buckled under pressure (some call this listening but I would call it something else tbh). We can crack on with #DignityForBrianna
Keep the focus. x

Omg, This actually makes me sad. 1. this tweet removed that this was a trans girl also a potential hate crime. 2. Gonna assume this was tweeted before checking the facts on 1. 3. It wasn't created by us. It's been used by us and others before.
This is the danger in people just firing off things based on what they "assume" to be right. If a moment had been taken instead of reacting then maybe we'd be talking about how the hostile environment created by a right wing government has put all marginalised people in danger.
Brianna's whiteness did not protect her as otherwise why would it take people have to protest that it be recognised as a hate crime? Why would she be dead named? Why would her transness be erased from the initial headlines?

Oop. The race biology essentialists have now entered the debate about the use of hashtags by those against gender essentialism. 🙃🤣
This is interesting. Race purity vs anti-gender purity.
Parts of Afropessimist thinking actually shares similar traits to TERF ideologies when looked at closely. Obsessed with who is “really” Black like TERFs are obsessed with defining womanhood.
Race biological essentialism 🤝 gender essentialism.

Absolutely no Black scholar who I would intellectually respect would think it is okay for anyone to claim ownership over activist movements or hashtags. Those liberal academics out there who say they are about, truth and evidence are doing the complete opposite for likes.
What evidence shows that this phrase was invented by Black women? Someone said so on twitter? Cause someone claimed it themselves? How reliable is that? When it’s been used by Sex workers, been used as a tag on here before and in the general milieu of feminist activist language.
How have you concluded that no one else should use something that was already used before? It’s a serious question cause all I’m seeing is group think based on what is essentially a rumour with nothing to back it up. What made you decide that only Black women can use the tag?

Speaking to directly to Black British women here - y'know the SayHerName tag doesn't include anyone who is not American right?? We ain't included. Cause they don't even say OUR names if we are killed. Let alone now if anything happened to us at all.
This is why I don't jump to agree with everything that comes from the across the pond. Like I said - solidarity is not a one way street. We don't need to jump so high when asked to. Ask any of these people if they have heard of Joy Gardner. Was Kamyimsola Olatunjoye name said?
No they bloody weren't.

If you can’t pronounce Birmingham correctly I genuinely don’t want to know what your thoughts are right now regarding Brianna Ghey unless it’s one of sadness and solidarity.
People are fucking scared right now. Was in conversation with a friend last night who is constantly calling her partner ( a trans woman) on the phone cause she sacred for her safety.
God knows what it’s like if you have a trans child right now whatever their race may be! If it’s that much a drama keep the fucking slogan so we can move on with protecting trans ppl ALL of whom are a target right now as PROVEN by this murder of a 16 year old in broad daylight!!

Omg folks I know who Crenshaw is 🤣🤣. Literally wrote my law masters dissertation on intersectionality so know more about her work then most ppl on here. I just naturally assume ppl would know I know that. Come on ppl 🤣🤣🤣
And my conclusion was intersectionality was a liberal take on previous Black socialist feminist work on triple jeopardy/multiple oppressions and the multiple other terms used to describe the same thing.
But it has value within the law context particularly when it comes to UK equalities legislation. I can send you in the PDF if you want. 😜
