I was holding off on this because it's #SteddyHands and I didn't want to post it during EdIzzy week out of Deep Respect BUT Reincarnation AU where you only remember your past life when you meet the person you shared it with.
So you go your entire life as yourself but with a new name/family/history. Then you meet the person you loved most from your first life and all the memories come flooding back for both of you. They don't overwrite or anything, just co-exist, and you move forward together.
Stede/Ed find each other first. Stede will later lament that he wishes their reunion was something more romantic. Ed thinks locking eyes over a gas station pump and nearly setting the place on fire with how fast he dropped the nozzle and launched himself over is plenty romantic.
They're both single, thank fuck, and Ed's shit is out of his apartment and into Stede's within 24 hours. They proceed to not leave it for a week, getting to know everything about each other all over again. They have the same bodies but new scars, tattoos, and stories to tell.
They compare notes about what each remembers. The memories of their original childhoods are faint, just enough to remember what events transpired but not enough to visualize them. Both are glad for it.

From their first meeting onward they remember almost everything.

Almost.
Something is...off. Both of them agree that there are gaps they can't explain. Some memories will be crystal clear, but others feel incomplete, like there's something preventing them from seeing the whole picture, a tape cut off too early. Edward feels it more acutely.
Ed does art as a side hustle and he's decent enough at portraits that he can sketch out the people they actually do recall.

Soon his notebook is full of faces in various stages or detail. Jack with his ridiculous mustache, Lucius with his ridiculous sideburns. God, the hair.
They try to recall anything about the ghost haunting their periphery but it's like grasping at smoke. The roadblock especially frustrates Ed, who eventually growls and slashes an X over the blank face on his page.

/That/ scratches an itch, somehow. They still don't try again.
Life is basically a honeymoon. They get married far too fast for their friends' liking but far too slow for their own. They live humbly and save all their spending money for traveling the world. Their home is full of photos and they genuinely just have a nice, happy life.
They pointedly don't talk about how each time they get to a new place, they scan the crowds for a face they don't know. That their penchant for local food and sights maybe extends past knowing that's where the best of everything is.
It's Ed and Stede's fourth New Year's Eve together and they decide to celebrate in London this time around. Ed freelances and Stede's corporate job takes off the week between Christmas and New Years, so they see the fireworks in a different city each year.
They're in a public park a stones throw from where the city's main firework display goes up. It's crowded, which means they're still looking for a space to settle when the fireworks start.

Bright lights bounce off the faces of the crowd, each paid eyes glowing with color.
Ed will later lament that he wasn't even /looking/ for Izzy when they found each other. For once he actually was just trying to find a place to stand.

The boom of a particularly large firework echoes through the sky, lighting the crowd as bright as daylight.
And there, staring upward not twenty feet in front of him, is the missing piece of Edward's heart.

It knocks the breath out of him the same as it did when he found Stede. Stede, who bumped into his back but is now standing stock-still next to him, staring at the same thing.
Stede whispers "Israel" at the same time Ed yells "IZZY!" and rushes forward.

Every head around turns, but only one matters. Izzy looks over with curiosity before they lock eyes and Ed can see it, the moment the memories come back. The moment he recognizes Ed.
Izzy barely has time to open his arms before Ed barrels into him, pulling him to his chest and holding him tight. The people around them go back to looking at the show but Ed can barely hear the fireworks over the hammering of his own heart, his brain a chant of 'Izzy Izzy Izzy'.
He feels Stede join them, feels how Izzy grasps him just as tightly. The three of them stay like that for a long while, just breathing. All of the gaps in Edward's memory close up as Izzy floods through them. He can finally see the whole picture, knows the whole story.
"I told you we'd find each other," Edward whispers. The responding squeeze and hitch of breath he hears is enough to tell him that yeah, they remember too. The booms of fireworks mix with the memory of canonfire in Ed's head.

It's just starting to be too much when Stede speaks.
"Let's go home."

It's all that needs to be said.

So they do.

Modern AU Izzy secretly loves Hallmark movies, and not ironically. Romance films make him depressed bc the realism of them just reminds him of his loneliness. But everything about Hallmark is fake, NOBODY falls in love like that, and they all have stress-free happy endings. 🧵
Ed passingly mentioned once that he finds them stupid and doesn’t get the appeal, which ensured Izzy NEVER mentioned it.

Stede likes them, too. Ed finds that charming. Izzy stops watching them all-together, even his only pleasant holiday tradition now too painful to enjoy.
The next year, when SteddyHands are finally together, they’re trying to get ready for a night out and Stede won’t walk away from the TV bc “I haven’t seen this one before, there’s only 20 minutes left!”

How Stede hasn’t seen The Nine Lives of Christmas (2014) yet is beyond Izzy.

No one comforts Izzy when he’s scared, or sad. No one tells him it’ll all be okay. He assures Edward of it, convinces their crews of it, but it’s built on nothing. Smoke and mirrors and the desperate hope (never faith) that everything will work out just one more time. (🧵)
He doesn’t need the comfort.

When their ship is rolled by storms and he waits below deck with only sturdy sailors and hopefully sturdier wood between himself and death, no one holds his hand or offers their shoulder to muffle his whimpers.

He emerges to the sun all the same.
Some nights, when the Kraken’s anger comes down on his back and he limps to his room for another night curled alone, he’ll make a sad attempt to comfort himself. The closest he gets to success is when he digs deep enough to remember the last time someone else did.

Izzy has seen men drown. Most sailors think it’s a dramatic thing, splashing, flailing, and screaming away valuable air.

It’s not.

It’s quiet, your body giving out and sinking below the waves, taking your soul with it. Some say it’s a peaceful way to die. Izzy doubts it.

🧵
He hasn’t had a fit in over a decade, because Edward was always there to see them coming. He’s attuned to Izzy in a way even Izzy himself isn’t.

It’s like he can read the dark clouds of melancholy that hang over Izzy’s heart as well as he can read the clouds in the sky.
But Edward isn’t here, anymore.

He’s in whatever fantasy land he’s constructed with Bonnet, holed up in their captain’s cabin, leading story time, or otherwise doing everything but making sure their ship is running.

Ed has Izzy for that. He’s always had Izzy for that.

Stede was glad that apparently making himself known in a dream had to be intentionally done, otherwise he would have been thrown into the fray as soon as he opened his eyes.

The pub he found himself in was absolutely packed to the gills with pirates.

(Part 10)
It didn’t seem to be the kind of place the reclusive Izzy would dream about, but Stede had recently learned a lot about how little he really knew.

He was pondering where to move when he heard a bright and familiar laugh ring out from the other side of the bar.
He moved torward Edward automatically, but then he heard another laugh that nearly stopped him in his tracks.

He pushed faster through the crowd until he came upon a series of tables pushed together. In the very middle sat Edward, who had his arm around, well.

Around Stede.

He’s not /wooing/ Izzy.

He’s not.

It just happens that Stede only knows one way to show someone he cares, and that way happens to fall in line with what many consider to be acts of the ‘wooing’ variety.

Sue him.

(Part 9)
He couldn’t give Izzy the peaceful romance he was clearly craving, but Stede could still offer one aspect of it: quality time with Edward.

He asked Izzy to demonstrate sword skills to the crew, and needled Ed into taking part in the demonstration.
It was fascinating to watch. On a purely technical level, it was obviously impressive. Izzy had earned his reputation as the best sword on the seas, and Edward had decades of experience sparring with Izzy to hold his own with.

Stede had gotten used to seeing his crew cheery the morning after a good dream. To him there was nothing quite like waking up from a pleasant night’s sleep.

He probably should have guessed that Izzy wound confound him yet again.

The man looked /miserable/.

(Part 8)
He wasn’t exactly pleasant on the best of days, and was even less-so the morning after Stede invaded his first dream. He’d assumed that having the dream go well would shift his attitude.

Instead he was cagey, and quicker to irritation than usual.
He barked at the crew but avoided them otherwise. When he looked at Stede he seemed more uncomfortable than usual. But Ed?

He wouldn’t even look at Ed.

The only thing Stede could think was perhaps something happened in the dream after he left.
