TRIBUNAL TO RULE ON #ShamimaBegum 's CITIZENSHIP CASE THIS WEDNESDAY.
But the hypocrisy of our government is out of this world... 🧵

The verdict for her appeal over the removal of her UK citizenship for joining Islamic State, which started in Nov last year, is about to be delivered.
#ShamimaBegum ended up in Syria as a 15-year-old with two other girls in 2015...
Here’s a recap of what’s occurred so far: 2/
Her lawyers are arguing the [then] Home Secretary @sajidjavid should have taken into account that she was trafficked to Syria and sexually exploited, when making his 2019 decision to revoke her citizenship rendering her stateless, against international law. 3/
AND THE HYPOCRISY... Seumas Milne [Wed 03 June 2015] wrote: ‘On Monday the trial in London of a Swedish man, Bherlin Gildo, accused of terrorism in Syria, collapsed after it became clear British intelligence had been arming the same rebel groups... 4/
the defendant was charged with supporting.’ –
‘The prosecution abandoned the case, apparently to avoid embarrassing the intelligence services. The defence argued that going ahead with the trial would have been an “affront to justice”...
5/
when there was plenty of evidence the British state was itself providing “extensive support” to the armed Syrian opposition.’ –
‘Clearly, the absurdity of sending someone to prison for doing what ministers and their security officials were up to themselves became too much.’-
6/
‘But terrorism is now squarely in the eye of the beholder. And nowhere is that more so than in the Middle East, where today’s terrorists are tomorrow’s fighters against tyranny – & allies are enemies – often at the bewildering whim of a western policymaker’s conference call.’
/7
Begum paid the price for “coming across in the wrong way” on television. Considering she was trafficked, abused, and spent her latter teenage years as a housewife amidst terrible violence, this onus on the finer points of her media presentation seems unfair.
8/
She was left in a refugee camp with her newborn, who died of a lung infection. A decent person wouldn't wish this on anyone.
But there is much more in Begum’s case to suggest she does not deserve one of the UK’s very harshest treatments - the stripping of her citizenship
9/
It is important to keep in mind that [at the age of 15], Begum was recruited and trafficked by a Western spy, [as it later transpired last year] in full knowledge of our authorities. Other than running away to Syria, there is no evidence that she committed ANY crime.
10/
And yet there is a lot in the British attitude to Begum that smacks of immaturity, racism and Islamaphobia. Much of Britain cannot seem to grasp that someone brainwashed as a teenager by ISIS might actually act like a teenager brainwashed by ISIS.
11/
Those who want Begum left in a detention camp in Syria say we shouldn’t make an exception for her. But we already are, as her fate became political.
Essentially, these people want Begum to court them, or charm them, if she wants any hope of us abiding by international law.
12/
Begum has already paid a heavy price for her involvement with the group, and her story is a stark reminder of the consequences of radicalisation. It is also a reminder of the importance of responding to radicalisation with compassion, understanding
13/
and appropriate legal measures, rather than with condemnation and retribution.
We must not forget that Begum was a child at the time, is still a human being, and her story must be considered and debated with a sense of fairness, justice and humanity.
14/
Her centering in this story of neglect and rejection undermines the more crucial roles of those who groomed and trafficked her as a child.
Why are we so invested, as a nation, in victim-blaming, whilst ignoring the adults who perpetrated the crimes?

THE COMMON SENSE APPROACH WE’VE BEEN HOPING FOR...OR A NEW NIGHTMARE FOR REFUGEES?
A cross-party think tank, British Future, is urging a 'humanitarian visa', which could reduce the number of asylum-seekers arriving in small boats. 1/ theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/f…
The government is expected to publish an immigration bill within weeks, aiming to automatically block those who arrive on small boats from seeking asylum. This, on the back of renewed efforts to deport asylum-seekers to Rwanda, will be criticised.
2/
Their harsh new proposals also hope to ignore human rights legislation from the ECHR, and be able to deport unaccompanied children, without allowing any recourse. 3/ conservativehome.com/2023/02/17/ric…
LONE CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 14 WERE DETAINED AT MANSTON UNLAWFULLY
Law-breaking has become routine for this gov and @ukhomeoffice as a FoI request reveals data for a six-month period in 2022, with some children held unlawfully for over 24 hours. 1/ theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/f…
According to the immigration rules, children should not be detained in short-term holding facilities such as Manston, apart from in exceptional circumstances, and holding them for more than 24 hours is unlawful.
2/
Thanks to the FoI request, the Home Office revealed for the first time that between April and September 2022 it placed 17 children at Manston who they determined were between 14 and 17 years old.
3/
A report released today by Inquest, a charity that helps bereaved families after contact with the police, has revealed a shocking truth about police restraint in the UK.
Figures combined from two reports show the truth, and analysis of official data makes it clear that
2/
Black people in the UK are seven times more likely to die than white people after being restrained by police. This racial disproportionality is higher than previously made public and highlights the need for urgent action to be taken to address the issue.
3/
"Robert Palmer KC told the court millions of EU citizens living in the UK risked losing their rights and being treated as "illegal overstayers" as a result."
In the meantime, divisive media messages are having an impact.
2/
Mr Palmer said they would be "exposed to considerable serious consequences affecting their right to live, work and access social security support and housing in the UK, and will be liable to detention and removal".
3/
The #HostileEnvironment made worse by Home Office cruelty - tens of thousands of refugees and migrants are being denied work and benefits they are due.
Allegedly "the Home Office is frustrating the purpose of the law by depriving people of the rights their status is meant to protect."
Some are being made destitute because of the way the HO is treating them.
2/
If this is part of the #HostileEnvironment policies to deter asylum-seekers and migrants, it is cruel, abusive, and unethical,
PLUS given the economic crisis, for the Home Office to
3/
The Tories often posit they are trying to stop traffickers, but closing the legal routes HAS NOT WORKED. Instead, it has made it harder and more dangerous for refugees to seek shelter from unsafe places.
2/
"Evidence on parliaments’ website shows that 76-86% of those who cross the Channel on small boats are subsequently granted refugee status" - so we readily acknowledge MOST of the people who cross, are 'legit'
