Part 2 of #dkbk steampunk AU

Where Izuku is a mysterious mechanic in town who wears an iron mask as he works at night. In daylight, he appears in public as the duke's son.

One night, a boy with blond hair stumbles into his workshop. "Are you the Mechanic?"

While he works, Izuku fills the silence with stories of his heroes from other kingdoms. They're the people behind every great science and engineering innovation!

He shares with Kacchan about the options that he's considering to have as an alternate power source for his heart.
Surprising him yet again, Kacchan is a formidable partner when it comes to brainstorming. Kacchan challenges his ideas until Izuku comes up with a better one.

When he needs the break, Izuku makes sandwiches for him and Kacchan on the second floor.
Kacchan tells him that he can make better food than Izuku and he’ll prove it tonight for dinner, to which Izuku becomes very curious about.

For a stranger that Izuku just met in the last 24 hours, Kacchan is not exactly what Izuku expected. He expected a stranger.
But they interact like they already know each other for a while.
It's been a few hours and soon dinner time approaches. Izuku is almost passing out on his workbench.

He has not slept since last night, he’s definitely running on fumes.

He almost falls asleep again, but his nose picks up a new, delicious scent.
Oh heavens.

It smells like Izuku’s childhood. His mouth waters at the savory flavor in the air and his nose leads him upstairs where Kacchan is setting up the small dining table with two bowls.
From where he’s standing, all he can see is the billow of smoke rising from the porcelain bowls.

God that smells so good.

“Yeah? Well get your butt here and eat, nerd.” Kacchan takes a seat on the other side of the table.

Inside the bowl is a fried, breaded pork cutlet.
It rests on top of freshly cooked white rice and it’s garnished with herbs Izuku cannot even name.

It doesn’t matter, he just wants to put the whole thing in his mouth.

“Uwaaa.. Thank you Kacchan. It looks so good.” Izuku clasps his hands in thanks.
“Eat it first before you compliment it! I saw you have some pork here and I could have made this so much better had you had proper panko crumbs, but—”

He loves to listen to Kacchan’s voice, he really does.
But his stomach, hunger and exhaustion have taken over and Izuku gives in and takes a bite of the fried pork.

...and promptly weeps.

“HAA?! Why the fuck are you crying!?!?”

“ISSH SOO GOOD!!” Izuku struggles to say in between happy sobs.
You see, Izuku was raised in a rich family. He’s had chefs summoned from different countries around the world and yet none of them has brought him to literal tears.

Are Kacchan’s hands divine, that they make food fit only for the gods?
His own chef, Sato, would probably not take it very well if Izuku says that this has been the best dinner he’s ever had.

...and Kacchan made it from whatever he has in the cooler, while he’s partially weakened.
“Deku! You’re getting snot all over the pork!”

That’s his cue to keep eating. He can’t let this good food go to waste. Izuku continues to thank him as he eats. That tinge of pink sits pretty well on Kacchan’s cheeks.

When they finish Izuku helps Kacchan clean up.
Then he contemplates sleeping on the floor. Kacchan has his bed, so it will be weird to sleep in the same one, right?

His carriage will arrive next morning, and he’s really dead tired.
If he still insists to work, it will be futile because his focus is non-existent when he's exhausted.

But Kacchan apparently, will have none of it. As soon as Izuku unrolls his bed cot next to the bed, Kacchan grabs it from him and throws it on the side.
“HA? You’re not sleeping on the floor. The bed is big enough for two people and a horse!” Kacchan starts dragging him to the bed.

For someone that lacks energy, he’s surprisingly strong. (or maybe Izuku just doesn’t resist it.)

Once Izuku is on it, he tries to relax.
But it's kinda awkward, he just ends up being too stiff by the furthermost edge of the bed--as far as he can go without falling off.

Luckily Kacchan doesn’t comment on it because he doesn’t have an answer as to why his heart beats like a wardrum in his chest.
But thankfully, his exhaustion takes over and he eventually falls asleep.

The distance that he carefully made sure existed between his body and Kacchan's has been crossed at some point in the middle of the night.

Because he finds his face all nuzzled against Kacchan’s hair when he wakes.
Good thing Kacchan is still sound asleep and Izuku tries to be as stealthy as possible to extricate himself from their embrace.

It goes like that for the next few days.

And these days, although has been his busiest, it’s also been some of the happiest.
Izuku has never had a real purpose before.

He has asked for more books from the castle. Of course, he also sends word to his mother that he’ll be busy for the next few days. ("I'm fine! Just busy!")
The carriage comes by regularly to deliver them food, and ingredients that for some reason, only Kacchan knows about.

(“Deku, did you remember to tell them to bring saffron? And what about the piri-piri?”)
Their castle chef Sato actually sent a note with it, praising Izuku for having taste in food for once.

Eventually, as Izuku develops this new technology that can progress humankind further into the modern age, he realizes that some unnamed feelings are also developing.

But he’s not good at this.
He sucks at putting names on feelings and he knows even less about the best way to deal with them.

However, life decides to throw him into the fire and force him to deal with these feelings when Kacchan’s heart almost loses power one rainy evening.
They had just finished dinner, and Izuku goes downstairs to turn off the lamps in his workbench when a loud crash comes from the second floor.

He can’t recall how fast he climbs, but he remembers his blood turning cold at the sight of Kacchan collapsed on the wooden floor.
The white glow from his heart is so dim. Izuku let his own heart take it from there. He goes to gather Kacchan up, even though he frustratedly tries to pry Izuku off of him, insisting that he’s alright.
Izuku doesn’t listen and continues to hold him, he’s too weak to push him away. So he puts his arms under his legs and gently carries him to their bed despite Kacchan’s protests.

“Lie down, Kacchan. You worked too hard today. Give your power source a few hours to catch up.”
He wraps Kacchan in that thick throw that Kacchan has grown to love (and which he regularly hogs at night).

Izuku finishes cleaning up the small kitchen and then joins Kacchan in bed.

A quick tap on the bronze oil lamp next to the bed and then the whole room goes dark.
His arms know where Kacchan is so he pulls him close, with no resistance from Kacchan at all but a small sigh.

By this time, Izuku has known Kacchan quite enough to know that it’s an apology for pushing him away.
The weeks that have gone by have revealed more of Kacchan’s personality to him and Izuku only feels so blessed about it.

Is it possible to love everything about it? The only thing he hates is the reason that brought them together--Kacchan's dying heart.
All of Kacchan’s little mannerisms, like how the tip of his tongue peeks out a little when he’s concentrating or how he always picks up Izuku’s mumbling no matter how obscure they are, sparks something primal and protective within Izuku.
Izuku has tried to ask Kacchan about how he ended up with the steel heart.

Once.

And Kacchan made it absolutely clear that he doesn’t want to talk about it or any of his past.

Thus Izuku doesn’t pry. He remains curious though.
That’s why he’s surprised when he feels the thick blanket rustle a bit and Kacchan rolls on his side to face Izuku.

For the first time, Kacchan begins to tell him a part of his past.

“I killed someone,” he starts, “but it was an accident.” Kacchan tells him of his late mentor.
He raised Kacchan after his own parents died. But because of a stupid accident, Kacchan ended up killing him.

He doesn’t elaborate further and Izuku doesn’t pry. He'll let Kacchan decide when he's ready to share more than that. He’s only grateful that he learned something more.
“I’m sorry, Kacchan. I can’t even imagine how heavy it must be to carry that guilt.”

There is a half moon out tonight, it illuminates the gentle curve of Kacchan’s hip, and where his waist dips into a sensuous bow. Izuku rests his hand on it and pulls him closer.
Kacchan smells of cinnamon (from tonight’s dessert) and Izuku’s soap.

“I also have a secret, Kacchan.” He figures that it’s time Kacchan knows who he really is.

“What, that you’re actually a superhero?”

Izuku snorts so hard at that because it’s so unexpected.
“Hah! I wish. A superhero with inhuman strength and speed! Hero Deku!”

“Sounds lame.” Kacchan flatly says and then he bursts out in laughter as Izuku tickles him on the side.

When he settles down, Izuku takes a deep breath and calmly tells him, “My real name is Midoriya Izuku.”
Kacchan stiffens in his arms. Izuku remains still too.

“You’re shitting me. Midoriya as in the House Midoriya who owns most of the estates in this city?”
“Kacchan, it's 51%, and most of that is protected nature reserve!” His parents are adamant about protecting their land from mass industrialization.

“Wow. That’s… that’s why you can afford all of this expensive shit.”

Of course.

Only the best for Kacchan.
Izuku lets out a surprising deep breath. Why has he been holding this? Telling Kacchan his true identity makes him feel like the reach of his arms are wider, and that there is nothing holding him back from embracing him.
He revealed his secret not because he wanted to impress, but instead he wanted to expose a part of him to someone he trusts.

And here is the moment when Izuku realises he doesn’t care about the names of his feelings.

He only cares about one name: Kacchan.
