This is such an important analytical question abt the #AsburyRevival /#asburyrevival2023: Why are both left-leaning & right-wing Evangelicals eager to endorse it? I’ve been puzzling over it & have a few thoughts (@BradleyOnishi & @StraightWhiteJC can speak for themselves). 1/
Truthfully, I was invited to write a 1000-word OpEd on the #AsburyRevival that I mothballed on Friday, bc I realized I don’t have a “take” yet on it. Or, rather, I have endless *takes* but no thesis. The events at AsburyU the past 2 wks have been an Evangelical Rorschach test. 2/
When I was still Evangelical, I inhabited left-leaning Evang spaces (InterVarsity & Fuller Seminary google.com/books/edition/…) & also many right-wing env’ts. We have to remember that left-leaning Evangs are still Evangelicals, & *revival* has a mesmerizing quality for Evangs. 3/
Amer Evangelical history is often narrated–by Evangelicals–as a history of revivals: 1st Great Awakening (1700s), 2nd Great Awakening (Methodists & Baptists 1800s), Azusa Street (Pentecostals 1900s), Jesus Movt, Toronto, Brownsville, etc. (Indep. Charismatics 1970s to today). 4/
“Revival” carries connotations not only of reinvigorated piety but of galvanization around political causes through Holy Spirit energy. So naturally left-leaning & right-leaning Evangelicals want to see in the #AsburyRevival a divine validation of their own agenda items. 5/
Bc Asbury U has “its roots in the Amer Methodist and holiness tradition,” asbury.edu/about/spiritua… & Methodist/Holiness institutions (partic. the UMC) are undergoing a slow-moving divorce around LGBTQ ordination & same-sex marriage, the #AsburyRevival can be read in diff ways. 6/
Left-leaning Evangelicals can see in the repentance & simplicity of the #AsburyRevival a rebuke to the politicization of Evangelicalism in favor of earnest piety & personal contrition (downplaying the culture wars for authentic spirituality). 7/
But, as I noted last week, leaders in the radicalized right-wing #NewApostolicReformation have also eagerly endorsed the #AsburyRevival & seemingly hoped to coopt its vitality for their projects of Seven Mountains domination
My Charismatic Revival Fury series icjs.org/charismatic-re… notes how enmeshed paradigms of revival (“revival & reformation”) have become in the #NAR circles w/ their spiritual warfare politics (#January6th), dominion theology, & visions of top-down societal transformation. 9/
The presence/fascination of #NAR-aligned leaders around the #AsburyRevival - leaders like Jim Garlow, Rick Curry, Lance Wallnau, Dutch Sheets, Sean Feucht - has certainly set many ppls’ teeth on edge. But I’ve also heard 1st-hand countervailing reports. 10/
I’ve seen multiple reports of Asbury U faculty maintaining a pretty strong hand of guidance over the #AsburyRevival & aiming to keep it squarely within the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition of restrained, reverential, low-slung revivals & to avoid culture-war political cooptation. 11/
.@TheRemnantRadio guys (reliably Charismatic, but mostly anti-#NAR) report seeing people trying to bring shofars (a Charismatic-Pentecostal appropriation of Judaism that’s become part of the iconic #January6th symbolism
And, according to their observation, the shofar-bearers are getting stopped at the door w/ polite requests to maintain the prayerful/reverential (read: Wesleyan-Holiness) env't. This seems to indicate the faculty/regulators of the #AsburyRevival are very cued into the optics. 13/
.@TheRemnantRadio also report that celebrity preacher-provocateurs like Greg Locke & Todd Bentley are not being allowed on stage but are just getting pointedly seated in the pews like everyone else. Again, seeming cognizance of the possibility of revival-hijacking… 14/
Now you have Tucker Carlson & other very right-wing figures diving into the Asbury fray. Also, importantly, the revival’s spreading to other univs & college campuses. foxnews.com/us/asbury-revi… Will the same carefully curated reverential env’t be maintained at these outposts? 15/
I ended Charismatic Revival Fury with a heartfelt query: Is a truly broad-spectrum Christian revival possible in our polarized/ partisanized culture or has #NAR-style revival become THE paradigm? We are witnessing in Asbury a testing of that very question. 15/15

I thought I'd offer some history on how the #NewApostolicReformation reacted to something similar 15 yrs ago at Lakeland, FL. 1/
What I tried to capture in my Charismatic Revival Fury series (icjs.org/charismatic-re…) is that the #NewApostolicReformation & Charismatic folks in general are magnetized to the idea of revival, the extraordinary inbreaking of divine-power manifestations in the mundane world. 2/
One semi-recent such magnetic event occurred, in April 2008, in Lakeland, FL. Pastor Stephen Strader of Ignited Church invited Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley to lead a 1-week revival. wrldrels.org/2016/10/08/flo… But the 1 wk extended to 4 mos of nightly mtngs led by Bentley. 3/
.#SeanFeucht Watch: Charisma reposted/amplified Sean Feucht's substack post re: the Satanic Grammys: charismamag.com/spiritled-livi… This is the 3rd /4th time they've given him a byline, signaling that Charisma sees Feucht as a central messager for Charismatic-Pentecostal folks today. 1/
Note Feucht's stark spir. warfare rhetoric: "The weapons God has given us to fight with are spiritual weapons...[T]hey have divine power to demolish strongholds." I showed in Charismatic Revival Fury (Ep. 4) how this vocab of spir. warfare is core to right-wing politics today. 2/
This comes on the heals of #Feucht getting access to lead Christian worship in the US Capitol rotunda last week: . In an intrvw w/ Shawn Bolz , he says the "regime change" from Pelosi to McCarthy cleared the way for him to do this. 3/
I know I'm being *that guy* who takes a truly funny TikTok video & turns it into an explainer thread on Charismatic-Pentecostal worship practices… 1st, please enjoy the clip in all its hilarity! 2nd, this clip comes from a service at The Storehouse church in Jasper, AL. 1/
That church was founded by Wayne & Jennifer Lee who came out of the International Church of Las Vegas (web.archive.org/web/2022052006…). In my Charismatic Revival Fury podcast series (icjs.org/charismatic-re…) I describe how Donald Trump visited ICLV a few weeks b4 the 2020 election. 2/
That day (10/18/20) at ICLV, Apostle/Pastor Paul Goulet held up an Appeal to Heaven flag to present to Trump facebook.com/DutchSheets22/…, & Prophet Denise Goulet prophesied over Trump that God would give him a “2nd win” and a 2nd filling of the Holy Spirit. youtube.com/live/nwcDqIbr2… 3/
A picture of the reconfigured Religious Right since the Trump era: Congress intervened to take the Nat’l Prayer Breakfast away from the controversial Fellowship Fndn (aka The Family), so an alternate right-wing event moved to the Museum of the Bible. No surprises so far. 1/
Tony Perkins (FRC) opened w/ a prayer. No surprises so far. Then Perkins handed it off to his co-host Jim Garlow, a key Indep. Charismatic Trump advisor w/ deep ties to the #NAR. He led the “Election Integrity Prayer Calls” in late 2020, a key organizing force for #January6th. 2/
Garlow intro’d a theme of repentance, and then had an (evidently Xn) man blowing a shofar, dressed in a tallit (Jewish prayer shawl). This Xn appropriation of Jewish liturgical symbols comes out of the Indep. Charismatic sector, and was key to the Xn symbolism of #January6th. 3/
A minor tremor in Independent Charismatic-land this month that shows the uncertainty of this post-/mid-Trumpian moment: Mario Murillo, 1 of the big 4 panelists on Kenneth Copeland's "Flashpoint" declared (via blog) he was taking a hiatus from the show. mariomurillo.org/2023/01/17/mar… 1/
Murillo is a big deal. He's a respected Evangelist. He was the preacher who Bill Johnson credits with actually converting a young Bill. Murillo's been around for decades, but as "Flashpoint"'s star rose after the 2020 election, he became a leading Trumpy prophetic voice. 2/
The top "Flashpoint" prophetic panelists (often interspersed with other guests) are Lance Wallnau, Dutch Sheets, Mario Murillo, and Hank Kunneman. Host Gene Bailey seems to be angling to take over Kenneth Copeland's whole shop. 3/
Xty is demographically declining in the U.S., but it's not going quietly into that good night. A lot of that decline is among liberal/prog churches. 45% of Americans who say "U.S. should be a Xn nation" is a still a demogr. force to be reckoned with. pewresearch.org/religion/2022/… 2/
The long-term coalescence of right-wing Christians around the Republican party means that this demographic, even if it's declining, is ever more important to Republican politicians. One need only look at Trump & DeSantis' jockeying for Evang leaders' support today to verify. 3/
