I crunched the numbers for my job search and the results are in! Wanna know how I broke into tech as a Software Engineer? Open the tread ππ»π§΅
Months: 6
Total Apps: 43
> Submitted by Recruiter: 31
> Premium Apps: 12
Interviews at Different Companies: 8
Offers: 1
I started advertising on LinkedIn and Twitter that I was looking for a SWE role on June 14, 2022.
I continued posting every weekday (M-F) adding value to my network and looking for coffee chats. I hopped on the phone with EVERY recruiter that DMed me.
Starting in November, I reconnected with my close contacts and began asking for referrals. I took my time to craft and submit my 'premium applications' at a rate of about 1 per week. That means:
- Referred app
- Custom Resume & Cover Letter
- Relevant portfolio project
Prior to every interview, I asked as many questions as they let me and did a lot of digging to know as much as I could about the process. I gave myself 1 or 2 weeks to prepare for each interview, so that I could study up on their tech stack.
Offer in hand on Jan 19, 2023.
The main takeaway from my experience is that I never just 'hit the apply button.' Not even once. For every application that I submitted, I talked with a real human being beforehand. Whether that was a recruiter or a champion at the company.
Find someone to go to bat for you. Be intentional with how you navigate the job hunt. That is what worked for me.

Transitioning into tech does NOT mean you are starting from scratch. Say it with me!
'My past experience has value!'
'My story helps set me apart!'
Let me explain how I leveraged my story to help me become the Software Engineer that I am today.

I have 10 years of prior experience in varied fields across healthcare, public health, biomedical/clinical research, and fitness.
Namely, I spent 2 years in medical school and I contributed to research projects in 3 different organizations leading up to that.
I balanced my work as a Personal Trainer while working through the web dev bootcamp of 100Devs. I had no formal instruction in programming outside of what I learned with 100Devs.
During my job search, I targeted companies that were related to my past work.
