How to host great parties.

This short #book talks about how networking sucks and why throwing parties is a much better alternative to it.

My notes in 🧵 Image
1/

Host it on weekday (Tuesday or Wed), as people have commitments on weekends

Set a 2 hour window (7:30-9:30pm types), the short duration allows you to ensure party ends on a high note when everyone is together.
2/

Call it cocktail party with snacks (no dinner, that takes energy)

Aim to have 15 people in the party, 5 core people and 10 new ones.
3/

Invite core group first (get 5 yesses to your party)

Then invite people you met and liked talking (can be anyone who you wished continued conversation)

Send total of 20-30 invitations for 15 people to turn up
4/

Send RSVP page (social proof of who is coming), have core group RSVP first

Send reminders (1 week before, 3 days before, the same day morning).

Reminders increase show up rate
5/

Include guest bio of few people in reminders to increase excitement to

Have everyone wear name tags, creates friendly environment. The book really insists on nametags (convincingly).

Put music
6/

Ask few core group to arrive 15 mins early, Give warm welcome to those to turn up first

Do 3 ice breakers (30 mins apart), last one deeper and first one casual
7/

Have harmonica or something for announcing time for ice breaker

10 mins before party ends, tell you want to be respectful and people should have their last drinks before party ends
8/

Start cleaning up to signal party ending

Put a reminder 30 mins after party start times and tell any stragglers that you need to sleep
9/ That’s it!

The book had way more structure for something that should be fun.

But.. I quite like it.

As long as you’re not ruining the fun by fretting over whether you’re throwing a party “correctly”, there are some great ideas.

Unpopular opinion: if you can drink in moderation, alcohol is actually a net positive experience in life.
Yes, I know that modern science says no amount of alcohol is healthy.

But from trade offs perspective, I suspect it does lead to good times.

The net benefit of alcohol is in friends opening up freely and bonding.
On that note, enjoying this beauty.

Didn’t know India made agave spirit (aka tequila). Pretty good. 100/100.

Did you know all the world’s tequila comes from the same place in Mexico that’s called tequila? That’s why this one says Agave spirit, not tequila but it’s all the same.

You can only succeed if you know how you can fail

🧵
1/ We want to be successful with our decisions.

Even though failure is often glamorized, nobody wants it on purpose.

It may sound obvious, but the bedrock of good decisions is defining what good means before you execute on a decision.
2/ Here’s why it’s important to define a clear, objective and unambiguous criteria before making any decision.

First, without a commitment to an objective criterion, your brain will latch onto your how you’re feeling to decide whether the outcome of the project is good or bad.

Starting a thread where I’ll keep adding surprising behaviours by people, as a way to sharpen consumer intuition.

Add yours?
- gen-z quitting jobs without having another job at hand

- Poor nutrition information amongst trainers

- proliferation of vending machines in malls/co-working spaces in India
- More people in 30s remaining single

- More couples who are child-free or stop at 1 child

Startups live and die in a multidimensional landscape.

🧵
1/ Startups are like heat seeking missiles, except they seek profit and live in a multidimensional world where one mistake means missing the target by a mile.
2/ Startups are hard because they require several things to go right simultaneously.

It’s not sufficient to get one thing right, an entrepreneur must solve this multidimensional puzzle perfectly.

Increasingly most online interactions (including on social media) will be human-to-AI, instead of human-to-human.

a 🧵
1/ The biggest issue with social media is bootstrap problem.

People with 0 followers get no interactions on their content, so have no incentive to publish.

With AI, you have hundreds of personalities ready to give relevant replies to any posted content.
2/ And since AI replies can be made to be super-relevant, and since majority of people don’t have many followers, it turns out that most people will start deriving a lot of value from feedback they get from AI.

This introductory #book on Internal Family Systems (IFS) by the founder of IFS gives a new perspective on what it means to “fix yourself”.

I highly recommend reading about IFS, if not from the book, maybe an online article.
1/ The core idea of IFS is that we are composed of several parts, and that some of the parts are stuck in their childhood.

In short, all issues in adulthood can be traced back to what we experienced as a child.

(IFS is a type of psychoanalysis).
2/ An example of a part being stuck in childhood.

As a child you want attention from your parents and felt abandoned when they didn’t give you that.

As adults, the same part may come to expect the same from relationships and react negatively when the partner is distracted.
