1/ Today, we're thinking about data for #HealthyAgeing 💭

In New York, Member States are gathering for the @UN Statistical Commission to discuss all things data.

The @UNDecadeAgeing calls for strengthening data to accelerate its implementation. But what does this mean?

2/ To implement initiatives & policies that are effective in fostering #HealthyAgeing, we need a fuller understanding of older people's needs & contexts.

One important way to develop this understanding is by collecting meaningful & representative data about older people. 📈 An older woman standing in an alleyway, smiling at the camer
3/ For example, inequities faced by older people will remain invisible if data on them are not collected.

We also can't challenge ageist assumptions of older age as inevitable decline if data on older people's contributions to society are limited.

(See: decadeofhealthyageing.org/find-knowledge…) Social media tile from the Global Campaign to Combat Ageism:
4/ Here's one issue:

7️⃣5️⃣% of the world's countries have limited or no comparable data on #HealthyAgeing or on older age groups.

Read that again.

(Source: decadeofhealthyageing.org/find-knowledge…)
5/ That’s not all:

When data about older people are collected, people above a certain age (like 60 or 65) are often lumped together.

In other words, the data are not disaggregated.

This obscures the diversity among older people & makes it difficult to rely on such data. ⚠️
6/ It doesn't have to be this way.

The @UNDecadeAgeing is our opportunity to ensure we foster #HealthyAgeing by collecting data about older people that is:

📊 Comparable
📊 Disaggregated
📊 Meaningful
📊 Representative
7/ The good news is that work is already being done to strengthen data for #HealthyAgeing.

For example, the Titchfield City Group on Ageing develops standardised tools & methods for producing age-disaggregated / ageing-related data.

8/ @UNDESA also conducts demographic research and population data analyses to support countries for sustainable development.

The World Social Report 2023 is the most recent product of this work, highlighting how investing in #HealthyAgeing helps us achieve @TheGlobalGoals ⬇️
9/ @UNFPA collects population data, including through census processes, to inform policies that ensure every demographic group can fulfill their potential.

For example, as the 🌏 became #8BillionStrong, data allowed us to see ageing as one of the defining trends of our time ⬇️
10/ Let's not forget about the intersectionalities of ageing – with gender, for example.

Through the Women Count programme, @UN_Women works to collect & produce data on older women.

Take a look at their data-driven research on older women & #COVID19 ⬇️
data.unwomen.org/features/five-…
11/ @WHO supports the work on strengthening data for #HealthyAgeing by maintaining an Ageing Data Portal ⬇️

💡 A WHO Technical Advisory Group has also been formed to improve how we monitor & measure healthy ageing for the @UNDecadeAgeing: decadeofhealthyageing.org/find-knowledge…
12/ And as @IE_OlderPersons has pointed out in her report to @UN_HRC, the collection & availability of data that reflect older people's full diversity is also a human rights issue ⬇️
13/ These are just some of the efforts to strengthen data for #HealthyAgeing – and transform the 🌎 to be a better place to grow older.

#AddingLifeToYears #MIPAA20Rome
Ministers from the host of #MIPAA20Rome, Italy, are now speaking on the challenges but also the opportunities of population ageing.

We are on average living longer than ever before. The @UNDecadeAgeing is our opportunity to live these extra years with health & well-being.
@dienekeita (@UNFPA) provides a strong message: we must do for older people now what we want for ourselves when we are older.

#MIPAA, #MIPAA20Rome, and the @UNDecadeAgeing all show there is political will to improve the lives of older people. That will must be backed by action.

People around the 🌏 are living longer than ever before. This is good news: we now have an opportunity to be & do what we value for longer.

But our societies & environments still require significant transformations to help us maximise this opportunity. 👉 who.int/health-topics/…
Although we are living longer, our extra years are not necessarily being lived in good health.

In part, this is because the negative effects of living in unsupportive, unhealthy environments accumulate over time & often manifest in later life.
