Randy Korgan: Rupert Murdoch was the kingpin behind deregulating the media, incl the Fairness Doctrine. Now money controls the media.
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: Corporate America's greed--they can't control themselves. They deregulate this, take away that. A completely free market is slavery, & that's where we started as a country. We're going down a slippery slope.
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: Any time the word "deregulation" comes up, there should be an equal sign next to it that says, "Workers lose."
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: You have to stop killing people [via deregulation]. For a while, it's like society gave up, saying they couldn't do anything about it, but people are fighting more now.
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: History has shown we can't predict what sparks a movement like with George Floyd. That had been happening for a very long time but when that happened, a movement took off.
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: As a union organizer, I'm seeing more people go to city counsel & school board meetings. I'm seeing more people, even non-union workers, demanding more of their employers.

Rick: It's like Upton Sinclair all over again.
Randy Korgan: History is repeating itself: Corporations are going too far. People are working 2-3 jobs & are so distracted while trying to have a balanced life. The next generation can be more aggressive.
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: Amazon workers walked off the job on strike & were immediately met by other workers in the industry. When one of their own got fired, the others threatened to walk if the fired worker wasn't reinstated. That person got their job back.

Randy Korgan: The political wins that are happening, esp. in certain states, never would have been anywhere near mainstream 20 years ago. FL passing a law saying you can run someone over if they impede your progress? That's crazy!
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: You can't recreate the flashpoints of history; it has to be organic. At a certain point people have to realize the individuals they're following are instigating them to fight with other people.
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Rick: Julie Su has been nominated to replace Marty Walsh as Labor Secretary.
Randy Korgan: She was GREAT in California! She used the rules in CA & allowed people to become ambassadors of the CA Dept of Labor b/c they didn't have enough enforcement.
@1932teamsters @teamsters
Randy Korgan: Julie Su is very pro-labor. She's a good listener & works to find solutions.

Jesse O’Connell: I think the word of the day on Tuesday was "skepticism." We saw skepticism from a number of justices; states are bringing these suits [regarding Pres. Biden's student loan debt relief program'.
@jesseocnl @CAPAction @amprog
Jesse O’Connell: This admin is taking every opportunity to forgive student loans through every avenue they have. Wiping out the debt for half the debt holders would really make a big impact on their lives.
@jesseocnl @CAPAction @amprog
Jesse O’Connell: Some people incurred student loan debt but didn't finish their degrees, so they aren't benefitting from those loans & don't have the means to repay them.

Sarah Burris: I'm just gonna say: The Pope wears a dress.
Rick: The folks in TN banning drag shows in public don't follow the Pope.
Sarah: Bless their hearts.
@SarahBurris @RawStory
Sarah Burris: It's funny how groups who purport to dislike this or that group of people end up being part of that group. Maybe that's something they need to explore about themselves.
@SarahBurris @RawStory
Sarah Burris: Conservatives who hate people in drag end up being photographed in drag.

Milo Vassallo: What we're dealing with right now is the consequence of a whole bunch of legislative decisions over the past years, with an oligarch--Rupert--who doesn't care about us & is making a conglomeration of media.
@FixMediaNow @MAD_Democracy
Milo Vassallo: Technology has changed & is the root at a lot of what is happening. The Fairness Doctrine applies specifically to broadcast television & radio waves, not satellite TV.
@FixMediaNow @MAD_Democracy
Milo Vassallo: We can stem the tide of consolidation. There are very few limitations to consolidation of that scale. The FCC could have the power to roll back some of the consolidation that's taken place.

The Railway Safety Act of 2023 is a good start but isn't enough. It would increase the fine the federal gov't can put on railroads from $225,000 to 1% of annual operating income, which could be tens of millions of dollars.

Detection devices when there's hazmat on the train checks for things like heat every ten miles. The train that derailed in East Palestine? The detection devices were checked either every 20 miles...or not at all. (con't)
#RickShow
(con't) Even when these detection device sensors go off & all the machinery is warning of danger, there's someone off-track in a booth saying, "Aw, don't worry about it."

John Russell: We're no strangers here in the Ohio Valley to polluting, but the train derailment in East Palestine was big enough to shock people out of their political corners. It's really bad here.

John Russell: Most of the testing that says the air/water quality is good enough to return is sponsored by the state or by the company, yet when the people return home, their eyes are burning.

John Russell: River Valley Organizing is a unique organization; they got about 200 people out on the streets, demanding relocation for anyone who wants it, ongoing medical testing & monitoring, & that Norfolk Southern pays ALL the costs.

Steven Greenhouse: A judge said Starbucks committed "egregious" labor violations & must reopen stores it closed in the wake of organizing efforts by employees & must rehire the 7 Buffalo store workers who'd been fired.

Steven Greenhouse: Without fines, with having to pay little backpay, businesses are told by their $1000/hr lawyers that it's not a bad idea to fire vocal organizers b/c the penalties aren't bad.
