The Republican witnesses in yesterday’s @SenateBudget hearing didn’t seem to have their facts straight.

So we’re setting the record straight with FIVE FACT CHECKS.

(1/6) 🧵

#RisingSeasRisingCosts
CLAIM: Fossil-fuel funded @ceidotorg witness falsely claimed the impact of extreme weather has decreased fivefold since 1980s.

FACT CHECK: Not according to the World Meteorological Organization, which finds losses due to extreme weather have increased SEVENFOLD (1970s-2010s).
CLAIM: @ceidotorg’s witness claimed he didn’t know how much funding his organization gets from fossil fuel interests.

FACT CHECK: It got 10s of millions dollars from dark-money groups like DonorsTrust and fossil fuel interests like @exxonmobil, and the Koch Brothers.
CLAIM: Fossil fuel-funded @ceidotorg’s witness claimed carbon pricing is a “cure worse than the disease.”

FACT CHECK: A well-designed carbon pricing regime can both sharply lower emissions AND help raise incomes for low and middle-income families.

CLAIM: The fossil-fuel funded witness says you can’t drive economic growth by fixing #climatechange.

FACT CHECK: If we act to achieve net-zero emissions, it could grow the global economy by $43 trillion by 2070. Failure to act could cost $178 trillion.

CLAIM: The same fossil-fuel funded witness suggested renewables need subsidies to be cost competitive.

FACT CHECK: Nope. Solar and wind—unsubsidized—are now cheaper than gas.

Here's our Trump FY2021 budget thread, which we'll be updating throughout the day.

Ranking Member @SenSanders: "I will do what I can to ensure that Trump’s Budget is rejected by Congress. This is not what our priorities as a country are about.”
budget.senate.gov/ranking-member…
@SenSanders The Trump budget calls for $182 billion in cuts to SNAP. SNAP gives just $1.40 per meal. It lifts 7 million out of poverty. And Trump would eviscerate it.
cbpp.org/research/food-…
@SenSanders The SNAP cuts in Trump's budget are both massive and immediate. SNAP benefits are already small - just $1.40 per person per meal. Cutting the program by a quarter is extremely cruel.
