#Casteism A 37-year-old Dalit panchayat president in Madurai district says she has been continuously facing humiliation by the people of a dominant Hindu caste. Of late, she has been receiving threats on her mobile phone from unknown numbers... Representative Image Only
Vidya, who was elected as the president of Pazhayur panchayat in Peraiyur block in Madurai district,

“Every day, the level of torture and humiliation is increasing. My mental agony can’t be explained over the phone in a few lines.”
Her caste identity haunted her and she was discriminated and tortured every day by dominant caste groups (Thevar and Naicker). They mixed human faecal matter and urine in a drinking water tank in the 2021. They also dumped faeces at her office .
She built a water tank for bathing first time in the village, which was contaminated with faeces around 15 times since two years. These are just few of the atrocities which was unleashed on her. Inspite of her complaints to police in the last two years, no police action was taken
On Feb 10 this year, the Panchayat placard in front of her office carrying her name was defaced with cow dung. She has sort protection from
@CMOTamilnadu as she says she is forced to withdraw her complaints and go "silent". She fears for the life of her family....
The government's apathy and neglect of torture her has led to the mental torture of Vidya who is a first-generation graduate. Police inaction has caused her to reach out to the DGP, CM, and Madurai collector but nothing has happened so far.

#Brahmanical patriarchy is so painful & violent. During the Travancore Kingdom, Dalit/OBC women were not allowed to cover their breasts unless they paid a tax. The fee was determined by the size of their breasts. This was made to humiliate them and remind them of their low status
The tax had been imposed by the Brahmin king of the erstwhile state of Travancore; one of the 550 princely states that existed in British ruled India in the year 1803.

Royal officials would travel door to door, collecting this heinous breast tax from lower caste women.....
There are thousands of women forced to follow such customs in the society but only a few of them have enough courage to stand up against such practices.

Nangeli, one such woman, who belonged to Cherthala in the central region of Kerala protested against the breast tax...
