I was at this event with my family (including my baby daughter). Political leaders were at this event.
I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not going to get into the legal issues of this. For me, this is about ethics, safety, & the #politas government's responsibilities.
At a time when we have a @Tasmania_COI undertaking its work precisely because victim/survivors were abused, targeted & vilified by those in government institutions, it is incomprehensible that they have continued to prosecute action against a whistleblower in this manner 2/
My contribution to the #coi does not compare to the personal stories & sacrifice of others that gave evidence. I tried to do what I could. Attending this event seemed like a small gesture for so many that do not have a voice, but might have high hopes for a positive outcome 3/
It was also an opportunity for solidarity, for those of us who had publicly established our experiences, at risk of personal & professional cost. It should have been a safe event.
It appears that it was not. 4/
The government & @jeremyrockliff need to urgently address these concerns:
Was video surveillance of the victim/survivor event taken?
Have Ministers seen this video?
What message does the government think this sends to victim/survivors about their safety?
How can we trust you?
5/
The dimensions & nature of democratic governance will hopefully be forever up for debate. The boundaries of autocracy though are much better defined. Whatever the legal recourse, the implications of government spying on the public & elected representatives should alarm us all 6/
To be clear:
The actions of the Tasmanian government are obliterating any premise of being a good faith actor. Actions such as this, & jeering at victim/survivors in Parliament, call into question the legitimacy of the government & its ability to keep Tasmanian's safe. 7/
For the Commission to be effective, it is not enough to enact the wording of their recommendations. The spirit of their intent is also vital. Day by day, the actions of this government compromise that trust, to the point that it becomes worthless. Do better. Much better. 8/
