📢 I am very happy to announce that the HER2DX genomic test for patients with early-stage HER2+ breast cancer is officially available at @RevealGenomics!

See thread below where I explain story + details behind HER2DX 👇

@OncoAlert @_SEOM @myESMO @ASEICAnews @_SOLTI @GEICAM #COI
HER2DX is the consequence of >10 years of research in HER2+ breast cancer (by many researchers, not only me/us!)

In 2012, I was a postdoc at Charles M. Perou Lab (bit.ly/3Ku9nn0) @UNC_Lineberger

Yes, I had more hair👱, and I "pipetted"🧪🧑‍🔬
In the TCGA Nature 2012 study (go.nature.com/3Aqswlg)...we observed that gene expression identifies various subtypes of HER2+ breast cancer...

and tumors that are both HER2+ and genomically HER2-enriched (HER2-E) have the highest expression of HER2 protein + phospho-protein 🎆

This is what targeted racial harassment looks like: nitpicking things like “smiled” or “wore clothes like a celebrity, as a celebrity” or “bought cookware.” It is part of the “gold digger” narrative.
This is common in #healthcare “#professionalism” where there is hazing & bullying by racist &/or classist made up non-rules lacking standards…yet people are called “breaking the rules.”

It’s exactly how bullies operate: double standards, mislabel/smear, exclude, marginalize.
In the U.K., “BAME” includes the formerly colonized, thus making race constructs or power different from U.S. as latter had race-based chattel slavery.

Thing is, those formerly colonized have many who have internalized self hate & racism.

This makes me so 🤢

The idea that women are automatically “safe” is exactly what creates this “opportunity” for some women to exploit children & monetize their “optics” of “trustworthy” on behalf of predators.

Gender does not predict ethics, integrity, safety.
Why does #GhislaineMaxwellTrial matter to #womeninSTEM?
⬇️federal funding
➡️private donors (Epstein)

“Socialites” open doors to elite spaces, including #academia #science #STEM
Women=“optics” & “reputation management” for these wealthy predator men

theverge.com/2019/9/19/2087…
These same connected women, often daughters of powerful businessmen

are on boards of #WomeninSTEM “empowerment” organizations or on #MeToo (TimesUp scandal)

the very women who are predators of young women are given access to women’s “safe spaces”? (!!!)

Did this quick search while listening to @RIAdawson & @IrishResearch #ResearchforPolicy seminar.

We need to include discussions re industry influence (#COI & #CDoH) on policymaking if we truly want to put the #publicgood at the centre of all of this
Would also like to see more discussion about ⬆️ interactions between researchers & policymakers at start of research cycle (setting & prioritising of research Qs), not just at dissemination stage #ResearchforPolicy

Like many of you, I’m an unapologetic book nerd. I love a good recommendation and love sharing after I enjoy a book.

So check it:

Just finished this book by our very own #medtwitter @AaronLBerkowitz. Here’s my unsolicited review.

(Spoiler alert: I loved it.)
2/
In full transparency, @AaronLBerkowitz told me (via Twitter) about his recently published book. And because:

1. I like books.
2. I believe #supportisaverb
3. It was on Audible.

I immediately used my November @audible_com credit and gave it a try.

Yup.
3/
I’ll admit—I’m a fan of @AaronLBerkowitz’ Neuro textbook. But I had no idea what to expect out of THIS particular book.

I mean, even with reviews from everyone from Dr. Paul Farmer himself to @drsanjaygupta, the book nerd in me was skeptical.

What Skerrit is saying in regard to not bringing #tobacco under the prescription model is complete rubbish. The @TGAgovau site explicitly mentions novel #nicotine products - #SLT & #HTP.
Huh.. @hollieahughes just said they're due to report by /18th/ December. I'd thought it was the 1st of December.

This, today, would be considered flat out torture

First, women’s health was not studied. Even when women’s health was studied, it was by harming black & indigenous women

When women talk of safe spaces I look at race

We know this has existed throughout history ...and now
In modern society, how does a woman with education and privilege seeking career success “lean in”?

She likely has someone else - often a low wage dark skinned woman - looking after her kids, cleaning bathrooms, cooking meals.

ethicalsystems.org/women-can-no-l…
What I have come to realize at midcareer & reading history more deeply

privileged women’s advancement requires exploitation of the disadvantaged, especially low income women

It is partly why election results in 2016 *was* voting for own interest in fact

Lagi rame-rame soal Conflict of Interest (#CoI).... Gw numpang ngutas soal #konflikkepetingan terkait tindak pidana korupsi (edisi1) ya anak twitter baru...
Sebetulnya kalau gw bahas soal Conflict of Interest ga akan selesai dalam satu kali pembahasan.. Misalnya ketika bicara mengenai self dealing, business law mengijinkan dengan syarat tertentu... Untuk #konflikkepentingan ini mungkin belum menjawab semua..
Gw mau mulai dari prinsip dasar, kenapa sih lo ga boleh nyuap? lah duit makasih gpp kali! kenapa sih soal #konflikkepentingan diatur? apa salahnya sih manusia cari untung? selama dipenuhinya kualifikasi sesuai kebutuhan bukannya gpp ya pejabat ikut lelang? Image

Though I disagreed with a variety of points in the bullet list of 'points of agreement', this article has a lot of sensible suggestions.
This one jumped out at me though, as .. impractical, given the #COI created by #BigPharma funding ..

Today's #Yiakl #SundaySpotlight goes out to the team behind #StopSlaveryInEritrea campaign for their dedication in running a very effective and strategic campaign.

The Problem:
In the mid-2000, the human rights conditions in #Eritrea have deteriorated drastically. Nearly all basic human rights are violated and the indefinite military service, torture, arbitrary detention has made it impossible for many Eritreans to remain in their country. Image

So many of these stories are so sad & paint a bleak portrait of UK culture of infant feeding, with poor support for #breastfeeding (so few successes) & awful stigmatization. The pivotal question is *why* this is - something I saw little attention to in the linked article.
UK women are not fundamentally different from nearby others who have much higher #breastfeeding rates. It is not women "failing" - these are not issues of #individualresponsibility. They are matters of #structures & #culture that facilitate or hinder #breastfeeding.
True support requires not simply telling people what to do, but enabling, supporting, and facilitating. That means committing resources (financial & social) to making change. Supporting families in making an informed decision, and then supporting them throughout.

I have been thinking quite a bit about the issues raised by the BMJ article below (& others) and the language of #commercialdeterminantsofhealth or #CDoH
It is so important that #socialscientists , including #anthropologists participate in these conversations
It is so important that we think about the role of #industry interests in shaping #health & #socialscientists can help frame these conversations in broader terms

I will now proceed to go on a #tweetrant / #tweetorial with regards to #Pharmaceutical #biotech pricing (focus on #cancer).

Very timely, also see @WSJ wsj.com/articles/big-p… on price hikes.

For the record, no #COI / #FCOI. Feel free to contribute to this discussion.
Lets look at the problem from the @PhRMA / business perspective. And lets suppose you are a wonderful company, started by wonderful people who just want to make the world a better place (I know, not real, but stay with me for a minute).
You start with a great idea / or pipeline platform and start selling this concept to #VC #VentureCapital, and lets assume that this is actually a really good idea. What is the needed return on investment to make this worth while. A: further R&D must exceed the cost of capital.

I’d like to talk about the finances - and potential financial conflict of interest - at the National Board of Medical Examiners.

This is gonna be a long one - but thanks for hearing me out.

Yesterday, I started a discussion about how our focus on #USMLE Step 1 was hurting both undergraduate and graduate medical education.

It’s gotten a lot of attention, probably because I highlighted a comment from the CEO of the NBME that touched a nerve for a lot of you.
Beyond that quote, when I read the article, what struck me was this:

The CEOs of the NBME and FSMB expressed numerous concerns about adverse effects of making USMLE Step 1 pass/fail...

...but loss of revenue to the @NBMEnow was not mentioned.
