It’s worth reflecting on what happened in the early days of #nodebate, circa 2015-2018
Radical transactivists aggressively pushed their relatively new ideas about gender identity and self-ID, of course, and pushed for a blanket non-discussion attitude in public life
As part of this, notably, they rounded on medicalised transsexuals, who they mocked as ‘trutrans’. The men who had been taking female hormones for decades, who had got all the surgeries, perhaps understandably felt they were more ‘trans’ than the likes of Danielle Muscato
And they were attacked for it, their ideas were also stamped upon by #nodebate. This is a key aspect of this very weird political moment, because this is the backdrop against which late 2010s self-ID policies were introduced
What #nodebate (which was also internal) did was create an atmosphere with absolutely no accepted public discourse. This was a key part of the strategy (you have to sneak bad policies in through the back door) but it also built the post 2015 trans movement’s downfall
Because if you don’t debate, in fact you shut down debate, you don’t bring people with you. And when you’re living in your own ideological bubble, ignoring public opinion, it’s very easy for even a public that‘s generally pretty accepting to say ‘hmm, I’m not sure about this’

Is teenage pregnancy a good thing? As feminists, should we promote it?
🧵
TL;DR: The answer of course is NO
But here is why…
Teenage pregnancy is associated with poorer outcomes for both young parents and their children.
Teen mothers are less likely to finish education, are more likely to bring up their child alone and in poverty and have a higher risk of mental health problems than older mothers
‘Parents should be consulted on whether their daughters have access to contraception and abortion’ is actually an incredibly white feminist take
There are lots of girls in the UK from highly traditional and/or religious communities who can’t go ‘hey mum, I know I’m 14 and everything but I’ve been shagging boys, can I go and get an implant?’ and have her go ‘well, if you’re sure, I’d rather you be safe!’
be fr
There are also girls without mums!! Crazy thought, I know
‘Hey dad, I know I’m 14 but I’ve been shagging boys…’
Can you actually imagine. In some cultures, girls could be killed (either for admitting to sex OR the pregnancy that comes from not admitting to sex)
Have ‘GRA repeal now’ and ‘remove GR as a protected characteristic from the EA’ campaigners had any political success or interest whatsoever?
They seem to talk a big talk - that usually includes calling anyone who disagrees or thinks this is currently unrealistic: MRAs, handmaidens, pervert lovers, “AGP ball garglers” etc - but they never seem to be making any actual gains?
Show me the GRA repeal campaigners meeting with MPs to discuss their proposals. Point me towards meetings where this is discussed as a viable option - anything
I’m sure these people weren’t always unhinged like they are now. What has happened?
‘Why should I have to make a sound and considered case for my highly contentious political campaign?’
Er, because that’s how the world works, maybe?
This is just #nodebate rehashed. Hardline GCs are increasingly not interested in laying out arguments, even internally. It makes their political aims less likely to succeed – if you’re not capable of making a case, you won’t convince anyone to back your cause
