Navy helicopter ditches off Mumbai; crew recovered safely.

This marks the first-ever serious acc/ditching of Indian Navy's ALH since commissioning -- an unblemished record of > 2 decades.

Mumbai (INS Shikra) is home to the latest #ALHMk3MR.

Will be following this closely.
All IN & CG ALH are equipped with Emergency Flotation Gear (EFG) for safely ditching in water in case of critical emergency. The EFGs are auto-inflated on water contact, with an emergency override should auto fail. All crew are given exhaustive HUE training at WSTF, Kochi.
Initial reports & pics indicate helicopter floating upright in calm sea on EFGs that operated to intended purpose. Good returns on all those hours of diligent training (simulator, on-type, HUET). BoI must dig deep. Crucial safety info must be shared with all users, esp ICG.
"sudden loss of power and rapid loss of height", as per Navy statement 👇🏾

Interesting. 🤔
On the brighter side, we're fully #atmanirbhar in ditching now. First time an indigenously designed & developed helicopter has been successfully ditched with EFG. Wonder if that counts. 🤔
The crew has put down the stricken helicopter admirably well. EFG inflated evenly. Rescue & salvage teams on the dot. The very first navy ALH ditching. Copybook.

I think the navy has all the evidence they need to nail this one.

True closure can only come with a deep inquiry and commitment to truth, however unpleasant it may turn out to be. My thoughts on this sad accident. #Rudra #ALH #Flightsafety

Thoughts on the Army ALH Mk-4 'Rudra' Crash at Pathankot kaypius.com/2021/08/22/tho… via @realkaypius
A month after the army #RudraCrash, no closure for family of Capt Jayant Joshi. No information on recovery of CVFDR, main wreckage or mortal remains. Just an ominous silence.💔
Thread...
1. 70 days after #ALHRudracrash into Ranjit Sagar reservoir near Pathankot, mortal remains of Capt Jayant Joshi are yet to be retrieved. The search effort that followed is unprecedented given challenges of medium, geography & unforeseen circumstances of the crash.

Why boast & brag when you can't afford an all-volunteer armed force matching your global aspirations?

The CDS & DMA again going for low hanging fruits. A terribly retrograde idea that incentivises the wrong metrics. People leave for myriad reasons. What convoluted logic is this?
Beware the "yes man" syndrome, especially with a newly-formed department reeling under bankruptcy of original ideas and penchant for ‘cut-copy-paste‘.

Can somebody decode CDS' latest semaphore message? To me it sounds like a clarion call to promote mediocrity & induce "pension coma" whilst in svc. The "welfare of soldier" theme sounds like a red herring; almost political, with no substance. m.timesofindia.com/india/new-prop…

"Anything on the surface can be picked up by satellites & knocked off by missiles".

#CDS disses Indian Maritime Doctrine espoused in great detail in 2009. All because of a #coronavirus.

Why am I not surprised?
The acquisition process is already a veritable minefield w/o acerbic comments like "unrealistic GSQRs" coming fm #CDS. Bandying fig like 70% GSQR compliance sets a miserably low bar. PSU/DPSU & babus will laugh their way to the bank. I wonder which constituency CDS represents
Here's a report which has the 188-page Indian Maritime Doctrine (IMD) linked. Imagine the U-turn enforced upon such elaborate policy directives by the CDS. Did misinformed ppl write this document signed by then naval chief Adm Sureesh Mehta?

My 13-points of advice on this subject follows.

Waiting for the best doesn’t work, we will take what you produce, Vice Chief of Army assures industry - The Economic Times m.economictimes.com/news/defence/w…
1. How about making them here in India and exporting to rest of the world – a win-win situation for all. Why not? A general feeling: Indians are unlikely to trust the quality and safety standards of equipment if manufactured in India.
2. If it’s imported we take quality for granted. If it’s indigenous, we start suspecting the pedigree. This mentality hasn’t changed 72 yrs after independence. And it extends to industries as progressive as aerospace and defence.

News reports cite IAF Chief ACM RKS Bhadauria admitted own Mi-17 was brought down by friendly fire. Sound bytes "Big mistake" & "punitive action will be taken" against "two officers" also reported.

My views follow.
Firstly, CoIs are merely fact-finding msns. They're not meant to pin blame or hand out punishments. CoI has to be approved by higher formations. Then, a legal process to collect summary of evidence (SoE) is ordered by admin authorities if blame if found attributable to someone.
The SoE is an exercise independent of CoI. A prosecutor is appointed who collects evidence afresh without bias or recourse to BoI. Then a charge sheet is prepared. The accused is/are formally charge-sheeted, forming the precursor to a General Court Martial
