Around the world, undergrad college education in this century has evolved towards a more Inclusive broad based learning oriented approach. For example, many top universities have made GRE, GMAT, and recently even SAT optional.
India has gotten even more JEErankish.
Yes! "Brand dilution" it seems.
America has like 100 massive high quality research universities with huge number of engineering and MBA seats. Population 33 crore.
But more than 6 IIT/IIMs in 140 crore India is brand dilution.
India should have all least 100 IITs, IIMs, IIScs, and JNUs.
China has invested soooo much in quality education!
Our fellow just does extremely dangerous exam hacking public events. Uses some Sanskrit. Sends ABVP to beat up liberals. That's education policy in #NewIndia
As sleazy as Xi is, he is making investments strategically. It is mind boggling, how much money China is pouring into education. Using money to get academics on their side to such an extent that America is filing espionage cases. He's at least trying to play 4D chess.
I totally agree, but having 100 of them means clearing entrance will no longer be as much of a big gatekeeping factor at it is now.
In US, sure, top colleges are really good but even the 100th ranked college gives you great education.
The fact that IITians still discuss their AIR (all India rank) decades later shows how creepily and unproductively gatekeeping the whole system is.
And I say this as a beneficiary of the IIM label. It really is mostly about clearing CAT and then getting a job 2 years later.
Our fellow is more interested in fueling anti reservation grievances rather than expanding capacity. He is more interested in playing favorites than building the nation.
His dudes literally attack universities! And are all over the Internet bashing humanities. And humanity.
My IIM label is just a result of CAT, a test designed to favor kids like me who have solved those types of tests before and who have the social or monetary capital for extra training and practice.
And they take pride in CAT being unpredictable. 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
That IIM label helped me parachute into a nice PhD program in the US. Which is where I finally learned what actual real education and learning is.
Made me realize that JEE and CAT are almost dystopian bad as ways to select students for quality education. Like parody level bad!
If you were to give an educator in the West a brief to write a hunger games type dystopian script in a deeply flawed unequal world, to keep favoring the elites and the wealthy and keep the masses down, they would come up with JEE and CAT. One shot one score tests.
An actual national interest based education policy would first at least turn JEE or CAT into standardized tests that can be taken year round. And then make sure they are just one of criteria for selection.
JEE/CAT are more swayamvars than entrance tests.
But see, that is the problem! Why do we need high percentiles at all for MBA?
As a business academic, I can tell you that an MBA is a course that almost anyone can do! It isn't surgery or theoretical physics or piloting to demand high selectivity.
Engineering and MBA are both professional courses and can be done by almost anyone without a learning disability.
By randomly putting up these low clearance rate rankings and percentile based entrance exams, all we do is keep people out. It's like a reality show.
They can also be done by people with learning disabilities.
That's the thing. India has a completely wrong headed approach to education. It's still about "1% acceptance rate" and all.
It's basically an auction where social capital is currency. Why Kota prep industry exists.
Precisely!
JEE CAT are basically education concierge services. Like first class in planes. Or fast lanes at Disneyland. If you have the capital, social or financial, you get preference!
Other countries are trying to go in the opposite direction.
This last class before spring break is my "Oscars Pre-Game". 10% of the grades in this class are for a group presentation on Oscar Advertising & Marketing.
Yes, there will be a marketing lecture excerpt 🧵 after. 😁
Some pics of things I'm going to talk about in class today.
The central message of this class and this assignment -
The #Oscars are not, repeat loudly, NOT about recognizing excellence in film. They just are not.
They are an industry trade show based on an industry straw poll and are about selling more films. Preferably Disney.
" 🤣🤣 Cos since Archie comics and breakfast club days, I've been fascinated by this concept but never actually known anyone getting it."
"You're weird"
I always found it so hilariously fascinating and foreign and first world that in America, "punishment" equals just sitting in a room for an extra 30-60 minutes staring at the wall.
She got detention for being late last week. Given that I spent a huge chunk of my first 22 years waiting for her dad to get ready in time for school or college, I'm gonna blame it on him.
I started off thinking 4-0 to India, but the Aussie spinners of this generation have shown the grit and guile that none of the previous Aussie teams showed. Especially Lyon. Hugely fanboying at his growth as a bowler in the last few years. Him winning this test too would be nice.
Goodbye, Satish Kaushik. You'll always be my Calendar.
One of the most underrated & forgotten bits was #SatishKaushik & Pankaj Kapoor playing Titu tey Tony, two brothers up to silly hijinx. In Phillips Top Ten.
Anyone remember that? Who has those videos from the 90s?
I have tweeted about this before. How we in India think we have the highest levels of academic competition cos our cutoffs are so brutal and our admissions so dauntingly selective.
My unpopular opinion is that NY/NJ kids face way tougher more intense competition than India.
Everyone who went to Harvard wants to send their kids to Harvard.
Everyone with any discretionary income to spend on their child also, if possible, would like to send their kids to Harvard.
Immigrants pouring in also want to send their kids to Harvard.
