Regarding sanctions, Kyiv suggests that some of them may be lifted from Russia, but in stages and only gradually, with a mechanism for renewing sanctions if necessary.

The most pressing issue, as always, is support for Ukraine – the Hungarian prime minister has consistently opposed any attempts to increase military aid or advance the country’s bid for European Union membership.

Another point of contention between the EU and the Hungarian government has been Orbán's friendliness towards Moscow, with Budapest repeatedly using its veto power to block sanctions against Russian oligarchs.

- Today, Orbán has chosen isolation and friendship with Vladimir Putin, Donald @realDonaldTrump and Xi Jinping against the clear interests of the EU and Hungary.

He has been given many opportunities and has rejected "outstretched hands", say Brussels. Adding that Europe's security is too serious a problem to negotiate with one person who sees things 180 degrees differently than everyone else, and therefore "the time has come to act".

The final straw was Budapest's move to pass a law that effectively bans the LGBT parade, as well as introducing a Putin-style "foreign agent" law to the Hungarian parliament, which essentially bans criticism of the government and freedom of the press. So on May 27, 17 EU countries, including Germany and France, called on the European Commission to punish Orban.
